Rhine River Cruise: Amsterdam to Basel

At a glance
- Route: Amsterdam and Basel are the two ends; the ship runs it in either direction over 7 nights. AmaWaterways' Rhine page lists three 7-night Rhine itineraries across France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland: Captivating Rhine, Enchanting Rhine, and Swiss Alps & Rhine Castles (checked Oct 11, 2026). Which one starts or ends where depends on the sailing date, so check the itinerary page for your date.
- Typical calls (not confirmed per sailing): Amsterdam, Cologne, the Rhine Gorge with Rüdesheim, Heidelberg or Speyer, Strasbourg, Breisach (for Colmar and the Black Forest), Basel.
- Airports: Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) at the Dutch end; Basel EuroAirport (BSL) or Zurich (ZRH) at the Swiss end.
- Getting to the ship: train, tram or taxi at both ends; piers differ by sailing, so use the pier address in your booking documents.
- Points: fly in with Flying Blue, Aeroplan, United or Virgin Atlantic via the transfer chart; book the cruise itself through a card travel portal if it is offered.
- The thing most people get wrong: they fly in on cruise day. Arrive a night early at both ends.
Three free things (each with a photo)
- Cologne Cathedral at the first light you can get. Walk up from the pier before the tour buses. Photo: Cologne Cathedral from the Rhine promenade.
- The Rhine Gorge from the top deck. Castles on both banks and the Lorelei rock; the best free show of the week. Photo: Lorelei cliff from the river.
- Colmar's Little Venice canals on foot. The old town is small and walkable; wander the canal streets. Photo: Colmar, La Petite Venise.
What the week feels like
It is a slow trip: the ship sails mostly at night and while you eat, and you wake up beside a different old town almost every morning. You will unpack once. The Netherlands day is canals and cycling; Germany is cathedral, castles and wine; France is half-timbered Alsace; Switzerland is a tidy finish with museums and a tram you can ride on a pass your hotel or ship often supplies (check yours).
How to use the lite guide
Read the At a glance box, pick your direction (Amsterdam to Basel or the reverse), and do three things this week: confirm your exact itinerary on the AmaWaterways sailing page, price flights on Flying Blue and Aeroplan, and book a hotel night on each side of the cruise. Everything else in this guide is detail for those three decisions.
Who this suits and who it does not
It suits travelers who want a slow, scenic, unpack-once week and do not mind that the ship, not you, sets the schedule. It suits points collectors because the expensive parts (flights and hotels) are where points shine, while the cruise fare itself is mostly cash or card-portal pricing. It does not suit travelers who want to linger a full day in each town, who need a late-night scene, or who dislike group walking tours. If you want freedom, take the included walks as orientation and then go your own way.
The free-things trick
River cruising makes free things easy: you wake up already in town. Walk before breakfast crowds, look for squares and bridges rather than ticketed sights, and use the ship's Daily Program for the one-line map of the day. On a Rhine itinerary, the three free things above cost nothing but shoe leather.
A sample lite plan if you only have a few hours at either end
In Amsterdam, drop bags, walk the canal belt for an hour and eat a market lunch before boarding. In Basel, leave bags at the hotel or station, walk from the Münster down to the river, ride one tram for the view, and head to the airport with at least three hours to spare. In both cities the rule is the same: see the water, see one landmark, and leave margin for transit.
Quick FAQ
Do I need to speak German, French or Dutch? No; English is widely spoken in tourist areas and on board, but learn hello and thank you in each. Is it all-inclusive? Not necessarily; see the full guide's chapter on what to confirm. How dressy is it? Smart casual at dinner; leave formal wear at home.
Points in a paragraph
The cheapest part of the plan is the flight. Per our checked transfer chart (2026-10-08), Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt points all move 1:1 to Flying Blue, and Chase, Amex, Capital One and Bilt move 1:1 to Aeroplan. Capital One also reaches Turkish, British Airways, Avianca, Aeromexico, Qantas, Singapore, Wyndham and Choice at 1:1, but not Virgin Atlantic or United: Virgin Atlantic is reachable from Chase, Amex and Citi, and United from Chase and Bilt. Search Flying Blue's Promo Rewards for Amsterdam and Aeroplan for Zurich or Basel region routings. Hotels before and after: check the chain's map in Amsterdam and Basel.
What a river ship day looks like
Typically the ship docks overnight or in the early morning, breakfast runs from about seven, and the included walking tour leaves mid-morning in small groups with headsets. Lunch is back on board or on your own in town, the afternoon is free for a museum, a market or a nap, and the ship usually sails late afternoon or evening. Dinner is a set time with a menu choice, followed by a short talk about tomorrow. The Daily Program, delivered to your cabin the evening before, is the one page that matters: it states the pier, the tour times and the all-aboard time.
Which direction to sail
Amsterdam to Basel and Basel to Amsterdam are typically the same ports in reverse, so pick by logistics rather than scenery. Sailing toward Basel (upstream) usually means a slower, gentler cruise against the current and a finish in a small city with easy trains to Zurich. Sailing toward Amsterdam (downstream) typically ends at Schiphol, which has the widest choice of long-haul flights and often the best award space home. Compare flight prices in points both ways, then choose the direction that gives you the easier travel day at the end, when you are tired.

Good to know before you go
We checked the facts below on 2026-10-11 and say plainly which ones we could and could not open. Confirm fares, fees, package prices, gratuity rates, deck plans, itineraries and schedules on the line's official page or in your booking/the line's app before you sail. River levels can reroute a Rhine sailing, so treat every port as "typical," not promised.
