Newfoundland in 7 Days: St. John’s and Gros Morne

By PerkJolt Travel Desk
Newfoundland in 7 Days: St. John’s and Gros Morne
Travel scene

At a glance

  • Trip: 7 days, two bases: St. John's (3 nights) and Gros Morne (3 nights), plus a travel day.
  • Airports: St. John's (YYT) and Deer Lake (YDF, the Gros Morne gateway). Fly into one and out of the other if the fares allow.
  • Getting around: A rental car is close to essential. Public transit covers the St. John's core only.
  • Time zone: Newfoundland Time, which runs 30 minutes ahead of Atlantic Time (UTC-3:30 in winter, UTC-2:30 in summer). Check your phone after landing.
  • Book ahead: The Western Brook Pond boat tour. Walk-ups are possible but not something to rely on.
  • Country: Canada. US advisory: Level 1, Exercise normal precautions .
  • Biggest mistake: Treating the island as small. St. John's to Gros Morne is a full day by road, not an afternoon.

When to go

Late June through mid-September gives you the widest set of open services, the longest days and the best odds of boat tours running. Puffins and whales are a summer story at the Witless Bay boat tours, and icebergs are an April-to-June story, drifting by on the coast with no schedule. Confirm current sightings on the Parks Canada and provincial iceberg-tracking pages before counting on one. Gros Morne is open year-round, but its peak season runs May to October and its low season October to May . Western Brook Pond boat tours ended for 2026 on October 10 per the operator's own post, with 2027 bookings open . September is a good compromise: fewer crowds, cooler weather, tours still running.

Where to stay, by area

  • Downtown St. John's (Water Street, Duckworth, George Street area): Walkable harbour, restaurants and the Basilica. Pick it if you will skip the car for a day. Downside: late-night noise on weekends.
  • Quidi Vidi or Signal Hill side: Quieter, near the trails. Fewer lodging options.
  • Rocky Harbour: The busiest Gros Morne base, with the boat operator's office and most services. Downside: it is summer-oriented and thins out in the shoulder season.
  • Norris Point or Woody Point: Quiet, with fjord views, handy for the Tablelands. Fewer places to eat.
  • Deer Lake: Convenient for flights, nothing else. Use it for a late arrival or early departure only.

Entry rules

You need a valid passport. Canada's eTA page did not say whether US citizens need one when we read it, so we cannot stamp that point: US citizens flying in have historically not needed an eTA, but confirm on the official Canada entry-requirements page before you book (We could not confirm this on the official site when we checked — confirm it there before you book.). Do not bring undeclared firearms or cannabis products across the border . Non-Canadians should buy travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation, which the advisory strongly recommends. Emergency number in Canada: 911.

Three free things, each with a photo subject

  1. Jellybean Row, St. John's. The brightly painted rowhouses climb the hill above the harbour. Photo subject: painted rowhouses on Gower Street in early light.
  2. Signal Hill grounds. The grounds are open year-round, even when the visitor services are closed . Photo subject: Cabot Tower on the headland above the Narrows.
  3. Lobster Cove Head lighthouse shoreline, Gros Morne. Coastal rocks and a small red-and-white lighthouse. Park entry applies inside Gros Morne. Photo subject: lighthouse against the Gulf of St. Lawrence at sunset.

How to use this lite guide

Read the At-a-glance box, pick your month, then decide whether you want the two-base plan (St. John's and Gros Morne) or the shorter city-only version. The city-only version works well over four days: Signal Hill, Cape Spear, Quidi Vidi, The Rooms, Petty Harbour and a boat tour in season. The two-base version adds a flight or long drive and swaps coastal city scenes for fjord and mountain scenery. Neither is wrong; the choice is about how much time you have and how much you want to be in a car.

Weather is the honest cost of this trip. Fog, wind and rain can delay flights into St. John's, cancel boats and hide views from Signal Hill. Keep a buffer day if you can, buy refundable lodging where it is cheap to do so, and never schedule a tight connection on the day you leave. Moose on highways at dusk is a real concern for drivers, so do your long drives in daylight.

If you are weighing this against other Atlantic trips, see /guides/nova-scotia-cabot-trail/, /guides/prince-edward-island-fundy/ and, for a very different landscape, /guides/iceland-ring-road/.

One more tip for the lite reader: pack for four seasons in a single day. A windproof shell and a warm hat earn their space even in July on the headlands, and sturdy shoes matter on wet rock and boardwalk. Keep your phone charged and your plans loose, and the weather will feel like part of the story, not a problem.
