Prince Edward Island + the Bay of Fundy: A 7-Day Maritime Road Trip

Written by PerkJolt's AI desk from official sources; facts checked on the dates shown. We may earn a commission from links; it never changes what we recommend.
At a glance
- Trip: 7-day drive, New Brunswick's Fundy coast then Prince Edward Island (PEI), then home via ferry or bridge.
- Fly into: Moncton (YQM, small, closest to Hopewell Rocks) or Halifax (YHZ, bigger, more flights, a longer drive to the start).
- Best months: Late June to September for full services; September for fewer crowds and warm days. October is quiet and many PEI businesses are closed.
- The one thing visitors get wrong: Fundy days are planned around the tide, not the clock. Check the official tide tables at tides.gc.ca (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) before you fix any day.
- Fixed costs we could verify: Confederation Bridge toll C$20 for a passenger car, charged when leaving PEI (checked Oct 12, 2026). Fundy National Park daily admission C$10 adult, C$8.75 senior, youth free (checked Oct 12, 2026).
- Advisory: U.S. State Department Level 1, Exercise normal precautions, issued June 5, 2026 (checked Oct 12, 2026).
When to go
Summer (July and August) gives you every ferry, park and beach service open, and the warmest water PEI's north shore will ever have, which is still brisk. It is also the most expensive and busiest stretch. Parks Canada itself warns to "expect high visitation in 2026" at PEI National Park (checked Oct 12, 2026). Late June is quieter but some seasonal attractions are just opening. September is our pick: crowds thin, lobster suppers and festivals may still run, and the dune grass turns gold. After mid-October, expect closed attractions, reduced ferry service and early darkness. Fall color in New Brunswick's hardwoods typically peaks late September to early October; check provincial tourism pages for current reports.
Where to stay by area
- Alma / Fundy National Park (NB): a small fishing village at the park gate. Handy for sunrise tides and Dickson Falls; limited choice, book early in summer.
- Moncton (NB): the practical airport base, with chain hotels and easy highway access. Not scenic; it is a launch pad.
- Saint John or St. Andrews by-the-Sea (NB): Saint John is a working port city with the Reversing Falls; St. Andrews is a postcard seaside town and the whale-watching base.
- Charlottetown (PEI): the island capital and the best base for restaurants and evenings, with the widest hotel choice. Chain presence: check each chain's own map.
- Cavendish / North Shore (PEI): cottages, motels and family resorts beside the national park beaches. Busy in July and August, many places shut after Labor Day.

Entry rules
- U.S. citizens arriving in Canada need a valid passport. The Canadian government's eTA page we opened lists a C$7 fee for visa-exempt air travellers but did not say whether U.S. citizens are included (We could not confirm this on the official site when we checked — confirm it there before you book.). Our understanding is that U.S. citizens do not need an eTA, but check before you fly.
- Rental cars: bring your U.S. license; confirm with your insurer or card about Canadian coverage.
- Return to the U.S.: passport, and read your airline's current rules.
What the trip feels like
The days alternate between two moods. On the Fundy side, you will plan around mud and water: a morning on the ocean floor at Hopewell Rocks, a harbour in Alma where boats rest on the sand until the tide lifts them, a forest waterfall inside Fundy National Park. On Prince Edward Island, the mood changes to rolling farmland, red cliffs and long, quiet beaches, with the Confederation Bridge as the dramatic hinge between the two. You drive about the same amount each day as you walk, which is why the plan works as a 7-day trip but would be rushed in five.
How the full guide helps
The $4.99 full guide adds a day-by-day plan with numbered stops and clock times, a tide-first method for the Fundy days, base cards by town, the exact bridge-toll and ferry-fare math (bridge toll vs. Wood Islands ferry), a points mini-playbook using only verified transfer ratios, a cost sheet with blanks for your own numbers, and printable day pages. It also lists every page we could not open, so you know exactly what to check before you book.
Honest negatives
Driving days are long, especially Day 4. Fog can cancel whale tours and ferries. PEI is crowded in July and August and shuts down quickly after the season. Cell coverage is patchy on parts of the Fundy coast. None of this is a reason not to go, only a reason to plan slack into the week.
