AmaWaterways Danube, Budapest to Vilshofen: the PerkJolt Itinerary Guide (C109)

By PerkJolt Travel Desk
Travel scene

At a glance

  • Sailing: 7 nights, Budapest to Vilshofen (or the reverse), on a river ship. AmaWaterways markets this style of trip as its "Romantic Danube" route; a sister route is called "Melodies of the Danube." Confirm the exact name and dates on amawaterways.com.
  • Typical port order, as published for this kind of sailing: Budapest (two days), Bratislava, Vienna, Dürnstein or Melk in the Wachau Valley, Linz, Passau, then Vilshofen. Confirm your sailing's order; it varies by date and direction.
  • Flights: you fly into Budapest (BUD) and home from Munich (MUC), roughly 2 hours by road from Vilshofen. Ask for open-jaw flights.
  • Airport to town: the 100E airport bus runs around the clock, about 40 minutes to Deák Ferenc tér, single ticket 2,500 HUF, bought and validated on the bus by bank card .
  • Currencies: forint in Hungary (HUF), euro in Slovakia, Austria and Germany. Your ship is mostly paperless on board spending; confirm in the app.
  • Biggest regret: not building a buffer day in Budapest before embarkation.
  • Low water: ships can swap to coaches or a different ship on a stretch of river. Typically travel insurance and flexible flights matter more here than on the ocean.

Who this is for, and who it isn't

Good for couples, first-time Europe cruisers, and repeat river cruisers who like one unpack and a new city each morning. It works well for people who prefer walking tours and cafe stops over big ship entertainment. It suits ages with moderate mobility, though cobbled Old Towns are uneven.

Not for you if you want a pool deck and a casino, if you hate group tours, or if you need a quiet, empty cathedral at sunrise (you will share it). Also not ideal for travelers who cannot manage a gangway or step onto a coach; ask the line about mobility on the exact ship.

A note on pace: mornings are usually tours and afternoons are free, so the trip rewards people who like to be out by nine and back for a late-afternoon rest. If you want long lie-ins and a slow start, plan to skip some included tours and wander on your own instead. Light packers do best, since you will repack only at the beginning and end.

The route in one paragraph

You board in Budapest and spend two nights moored near the river's heart, so you can see Parliament lit at night from the water. You sail overnight into Slovakia for a short Bratislava stop, reach Vienna for a full day, then spend the Wachau day gliding past vineyards and the ruined castle above Dürnstein before a walk up to Melk's abbey. Linz is the gateway to Salzburg or Český Krumlov excursions. Passau, the "city of three rivers," is a walkable finale, and Vilshofen is a small Bavarian town where you disembark, usually by coach to Munich or Prague extensions. Typical published order; confirm your sailing on amawaterways.com.

Embarkation basics

Your pier is on the Pest or Buda embankment, depending on the ship; the cruise line sends the exact berth in your final documents. Arrive a day early. Taxis and ride apps are the simplest way to the ship; the 100E bus gets you to Deák Ferenc tér, a short taxi from most piers. Luggage tags and boarding time come from the line. Check the line's current check-in rules in your booking.

If you have time, walk the embankment in daylight before boarding so you know where the ship is and how long the walk takes. Budapest has a reputation for taxi overcharging; ride apps or a taxi booked through your hotel avoid the argument. Keep your passport, boarding documents and any medication in a day bag, not in the suitcase that goes ahead to the cabin.

Three free things

  1. Budapest, Danube Promenade at night. Walk the Pest embankment and watch Parliament light up. Photo subject: the Hungarian Parliament Building reflected in the Danube at blue hour.
  2. Vienna, the Ringstrasse and the cathedral exterior. Walk the Ring boulevards and the square around St. Stephen's. Photo subject: the patterned tile roof of St. Stephen's Cathedral.
  3. Wachau day, Dürnstein from the deck. Free scenic cruising past vineyard terraces, abbeys and the castle ruin. Photo subject: the blue-and-white abbey tower of Dürnstein with the ruin on the hill. On an upstream sailing, typically stand on the right-hand (starboard) side; confirm with the cruise director.

Entry and documents

US citizens need a valid passport for these countries. Cruises that begin and end in the same US port can use "closed loop" documents, but this trip starts in Hungary and ends in Germany, so do not rely on closed-loop rules; see cbp.gov and the cruise line's document page. ETIAS and the EU Entry/Exit System are changing how non-EU travelers enter Europe; the EU's page would not open for us, so confirm current start dates and fees at https://travel-europe.europa.eu before you book. Advisories as seen on travel.state.gov on 2026-10-12 (page lists issue dates): Hungary Level 1 (issued 04/15/2026), Slovakia Level 1 (02/12/2026), Austria Level 1 (08/21/2026), Germany Level 2 with terrorism as the risk indicator (05/13/2025) .

Good to know before you go

We checked the facts below on 2026-10-12. Cruise itineraries, port calls, fees, schedules and government advisories change often, and river sailings can be altered after booking by water levels. Confirm everything on the official pages named here, and in your booking or the line's app, before you pay or sail.
