Antarctica expedition cruises: fly-the-Drake vs sail-the-Drake, and how Lindblad, HX (Hurtigruten) and Quark actually differ

At a glance

  • Representative 11-day sailing, not a published itinerary. Port order and landings vary by date; confirm on the line's itinerary page.
  • Embark: Ushuaia, Argentina (via Buenos Aires), typically. Fly-cruise versions typically start from Punta Arenas, Chile.
  • Sail or fly the Drake: sailing means roughly two days each way on open ocean; flying skips it.
  • Three lines, three characters: Lindblad (small-ship, naturalist and photography focus), HX (expedition cruising; details not confirmed on travelhx.com as of 2026-10-13), Quark (polar specialist with a broad range of trips).
  • Season: typically November to March.
  • Biggest mistake: booking a tight flight home on disembark day. Leave slack for weather.

When to go

Lindblad's page lists Antarctica departures from October through March and says early season brings courting penguins, with a note that November has pristine snow, January penguin chicks and March strong sunsets . Typically, whales are more present late in the season, and early season has more sea ice. Confirm month-by-month on your line's page.

The route in brief

Buenos Aires (arrive, hotel night) -> charter flight to Ushuaia and embark -> two days crossing the Drake Passage -> four days among the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, with Zodiac landings and cruises where conditions allow -> two days back across the Drake -> Ushuaia and a flight to Buenos Aires.

Fly or sail

Sailing the Drake gives you the classic crossing, time with the onboard naturalists and the seasickness risk. Flying shortens the trip. Quark's page lists "Fly the Drake" at 8 days, and Lindblad's lists "Antarctica Direct: Fly the Drake Passage" at 8-10 days . Flights can be delayed by weather, which is the honest downside.

Where to stay the night before (Buenos Aires)

  • Recoleta: elegant, walkable, quiet at night. Suits couples and first-timers. Downside: pricier.
  • Palermo: cafes and restaurants, lively. Suits younger travelers. Downside: farther from the old centre.
  • Puerto Madero: modern waterfront, towers. Suits business-style comfort. Downside: less local character.
  • Microcentro / San Telmo: historic and central. Suits sightseers. Downside: noisier, take care at night.

Fly-cruise charters typically leave from Aeroparque (AEP), not Ezeiza (EZE); confirm your departure airport in your line's documents.

Rough cost, three ways (fill in from the official pages)

Lean Mid Comfort

Hotels, insurance, extras $____ $____ $____

We never quote a specific sailing's fare; use the line's booking page and your dates.

Entry rules pointer

Check your passport rules for Argentina and Chile, and the travel advisory. As of our check: Argentina was Level 1 (issued July 10, 2026) and Chile Level 2 (issued August 19, 2026) . Lines also require medical forms; confirm per line.

The three lines in one paragraph each

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic lists four named ships at 102 to 148 guests, Zodiac landings, kayaking and a National Geographic photographer on every departure, per its page . Quark Expeditions lists Ultramarine, Ocean Explorer and World Voyager (168 passengers) and trips from 8 to 23 days . HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions): Not confirmed on travelhx.com as of 2026-10-13 — check ship names, capacity and landing policy before you book.

Gear, insurance and forms

Parkas and boots are typically provided or loaned by the line; confirm per line. You still bring base layers, gloves, a hat, sunglasses, waterproof pants and your own seasickness plan. Buy travel insurance with medical evacuation cover; polar evacuation is expensive and slow. Each line requires a medical form; confirm on your booking.

Points angle

Per our transfer chart, checked 2026-10-08, Aeroplan, Avianca and several airline programs accept 1:1 transfers from the major card currencies. Search award space to Buenos Aires (EZE) or Santiago (SCL) before transferring anything. We do not quote award prices.

Three free things

  1. Port Lockroy-style heritage stories: read up on the museum and the world's southernmost post office, which UKAHT describes . Photo subject: the small hut and penguins outside it.
  2. Ushuaia waterfront at golden hour. Photo subject: boats and mountains behind.
  3. Recoleta's streets in Buenos Aires. Photo subject: leafy facades.

How the three lines differ, in plain terms

Character. Lindblad presents itself around National Geographic naturalists and photographers; its page says every departure includes a National Geographic photographer and that guests are split into small groups . Quark presents itself as a polar specialist and lists everything from 8-day fly trips to 23-day epics . HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions): Not confirmed on travelhx.com as of 2026-10-13 — check before you sail.

Ship size. Only as the official pages state: Lindblad lists ships carrying 102 to 148 guests; Quark lists World Voyager at 168 passengers and gives no capacity for Ultramarine or Ocean Explorer. Smaller ships generally mean more time ashore per guest, but ask each line how many people go ashore at once.

Landing policy. The IAATO guidelines (iaato.org) apply across operators; read the official guidelines for the passenger-per-landing rule as IAATO describes it. Not confirmed on iaato.org as of 2026-10-13 — check the current number before you sail.

Fly-cruise. Both Lindblad and Quark list fly-the-Drake products on their pages.

Why the Drake matters

The Drake Passage is the open ocean between Tierra del Fuego and the Antarctic Peninsula. Sailing it takes about two days each direction, typically, and conditions vary. Sailing is a rite of passage for some and the thing others want to avoid: you get extra days at sea, lectures and the sense of arriving. Flying, typically from Punta Arenas to King George Island on a charter, saves about four days of sailing but ties you to charter-flight weather. Weather can delay flights, so both options need slack in your schedule. If you easily get seasick, flying is attractive. If you want the full expedition feel and have the time, sailing is. The right choice depends on your stomach, your leave and your budget.

What the trip is like

Most days follow one rhythm. You wake to a call over the ship's speaker, eat breakfast, put on layers and boots, clean your boots, and board Zodiac boats in small groups. Ashore you walk on marked routes, stay a respectful distance from penguins and seals, and listen to the guides. You come back, clean your boots again, and eat. The afternoon repeats. Evenings are recaps, talks and sleep. It is a physical trip but not an athletic one: you need to be steady getting in and out of boats and standing on slippery shore, and you should check each line's mobility guidance.

Good to know before you go

We checked the facts below on 2026-10-13. Confirm hours, fees, port calls, landing details and schedules on the official page (and the line's app or your booking) before you book or sail. Antarctic itineraries are weather- and ice-dependent by design: no line can promise a specific landing.
