At a glance

  • Sails from: the Port of New Orleans, Louisiana, a round trip of 7 nights (8 days).
  • Ships: Carnival's New Orleans page lists Carnival Dream, Carnival Liberty and Carnival Valor under "Which Ships Sail Here?" . The page does not say which ship runs which week, so treat the ship as "the New Orleans-based ship: confirm in your booking."
  • Ports Carnival's Western Caribbean page names: Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán, Belize, Grand Cayman and Jamaica . Your sailing will call at some of these, not all.
  • Fly into: Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (MSY), described by the airport as a short drive from downtown, the French Quarter and the Central Business District .
  • Documents: US citizens on a closed-loop cruise: confirm the current rule on cbp.gov and travel.state.gov. Not confirmed on cbp.gov as of 2026-10-13: check there before you book. A passport is the simplest answer for every traveler.
  • Safety headline: Mexico is Level 2; Honduras is Level 3 (see below).
  • Money: nothing is priced here for a specific sailing; the cost sheet gives blanks and the official page for each line.
  • Best for: first Caribbean cruises that want a warm-water week without a flight to Florida.
  • Honest downside: two days at sea each way means fewer beach hours than a Florida departure.

When to go

The Western Caribbean is warm all year; the Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, so travel insurance and flexible flights matter most in that window. Winter and spring are drier. Prices follow school holidays. Pick dates on Carnival's sailing calendar and check the weather outlook for your week.

The route in brief

A representative sailing leaves New Orleans in the afternoon, spends a sea day crossing the Gulf, then calls at four ports before a sea day home: Roatán (Mahogany Bay), Belize, Costa Maya and Cozumel, then back up the Mississippi to the cruise terminals. Your sailing may drop or swap ports. Day 8 is debarkation.

The night before: where to stay by area

  • French Quarter and Jackson Square: most atmosphere, walkable to the St. Louis Cathedral; loud at night.
  • Central Business District / Warehouse District: quieter, closest in feel to the riverfront terminals; fewer sights on foot.
  • Near the airport: cheapest for a very early flight, but you lose the city. Check each chain's map for properties; chain presence is not confirmed as of 2026-10-13.

Full area cards are in the full guide. Our companion guides cover the city itself: /guides/new-orleans/ and /guides/weekend-points-new-orleans/.

Rough cost, three ways

  • Plan your budget

    Your trip budget worksheet

Prices change daily, so we don’t quote them. Fill this in from the official fare pages.

    Your trip budget worksheet
    Item Your amount
    Cash: cruise fare
    port fees/taxes
    gratuities
    flights
    night-before hotel
    parking or transfer
    excursions
  • Points: use points for flights and the pre-cruise hotel; the cruise fare itself is typically a cash purchase, optionally paid with a card that earns travel credit. Transfer ratios in our chart (checked 2026-10-08) are in the full guide.
  • Mixed: cash for the cruise, points for the flight, a paid or free-cancellation hotel.
  • One verified number: New Orleans RTA streetcar and bus single ride $1.25; 1-Day Jazzy Pass $3.00; 3-Day Jazzy Pass $8.00 (adult) .

Entry and documents

Closed-loop cruises (starting and ending at the same US port) have a special document rule for US citizens. Read it on cbp.gov and travel.state.gov; the wording is not confirmed on cbp.gov as of 2026-10-13, so check there before you book. Every foreign port can set its own rules for the traveler in front of it, and a passport also covers you if you must fly home from a port.

Advisory levels we read:

  • Mexico (includes Quintana Roo: Cozumel, Costa Maya area): Level 2, Exercise increased caution. [read 2026-10-13, https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/mexico-travel-advisory.html — page dated May 29, 2026, Level 2]. The page cites terrorism, crime and kidnapping, and for Quintana Roo advises watching your surroundings after dark and staying in well-lit tourist zones.
  • Honduras (includes Roatán and the Bay Islands): Level 3, Reconsider travel, due to crime. [read 2026-10-13, https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/honduras-travel-advisory.html — page dated December 10, 2024, Level 3]. The page does not single out Roatán, says the Bay Islands have resources concentrated around resort areas that are better policed, and still describes violent crime as common. Cruise passengers who stay with ship excursions or inside the port area reduce exposure; decide for yourself, and skip the call if it makes you uneasy.
  • Belize: Not confirmed on https://travel.state.gov as of 2026-10-13 — check the Belize advisory there before you book.

Three free things in the ports

  1. Cozumel waterfront walk — a stroll along the seafront promenade near the cruise piers (photo subject: Cozumel waterfront promenade at San Miguel).
  2. Costa Maya shoreline from the port complex — a look at the beach and palms from the pier area (photo subject: Costa Maya port beach).
  3. Mahogany Bay shoreline — watch the ship from the dock area (photo subject: Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, Roatán).

Free entry at the Costa Maya and Mahogany Bay port areas is not confirmed on each port's official page as of 2026-10-13; check there.

For ship-versus-DIY excursion choices see /guides/cruises/cruise-shore-excursions/; first sailing? Start at /guides/cruises/first-time-cruiser/ and /guides/cruises/carnival/. Compare with the Texas departure at /guides/cruises/carnival-western-caribbean-galveston/.

A note on the ports. Roatán (Honduras) is the one port on this plan where the advisory level is higher than the others, so decide before you sail whether you will go ashore beyond the cruise center. Cozumel and Costa Maya are Mexico, Level 2, with guidance to stay in tourist zones and be careful after dark. Belize's level is for you to read on travel.state.gov before you book.

Good to know before you go

We checked the pages below on 2026-10-13. Itineraries, port calls, fees, which terminal you use, and schedules move, so confirm them on Carnival's official page, in your booking or in the line's app before you sail. The day-by-day plan in this guide is a representative 7-night sailing, not a published schedule; confirm the port order in your booking.
