At a glance

  • Gateway: fly to Oslo (OSL), then on to Longyearbyen (LYR) on Spitsbergen. Most Svalbard expedition cruises start and end in Longyearbyen, but some, like HX's Svalbard Line, sail from Bergen (as described on hurtigruten.com, 2026-10-14).
  • Season: the polar summer runs 17 May to 30 September ; July and August are the usual ice-edge-plus-flowers months.
  • Ship size: expedition ships here carry from roughly 138 to 168 guests (per each line's page, opened 2026-10-14), small enough for Zodiac landings in small groups.
  • Safety: polar bears can be met anywhere on Svalbard all year; you do not walk ashore alone.
  • Book ahead: the cruise itself, flights to Longyearbyen (limited seats) and a Longyearbyen hotel night. Lead times unverified; check the airline and hotel pages.
  • The one thing most people get wrong: treating the itinerary as a promise. "When conditions allow" means ice, fog, wind and bears decide each landing.

Who it is for

Travelers who want Arctic landscape, wildlife and a ship small enough to land in groups, and who can climb in and out of a Zodiac in cold wind. It is a poor fit if you need guaranteed polar bear sightings, a pool deck, or a rigid schedule. Be honest with yourself about cold hands, a long boat transfer and a slim chance of a cancelled landing.

When to go

The polar summer runs 17 May to 30 September, with midnight sun . Lindblad's page describes Svalbard voyages from April through June, with lingering sea ice and polar bears on the ice . July and August are the common months for open water and tundra; confirm each line's own dates.

The route in brief

lesund, the Smeerenburg and Magdalenefjorden area, the pack-ice edge near the Seven Islands if conditions allow, Hinlopen Strait, then south to Hornsund and back. The ship on your sailing: confirm in your booking.

Rough cost, three ways

Prices change daily, so we don’t quote them. Fill this in from the official fare pages.

    Your trip budget worksheet
    Item Your amount
Budget: a short sailing in a shared cabin, flights on points, one hotel night. Cruise fare $
  • Middle: an outside cabin on a small ship, flights partly on points. HX also sells a longer Bergen-round-trip Svalbard Line sailing (15 days, May–September 2027 per its page ); fares are on that page and change by date. That is a different, longer route.

Entry and documents

Svalbard is part of Norway, but you fly through mainland Norway. Check passport validity and entry rules on the official Norway pages and travel.state.gov. Norway is Level 1, "Exercise normal precautions," issued 2026-07-06 [read 2026-10-14, https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/norway-travel-advisory.html — Level 1, issued 07/06/2026]. The advisory page tells Svalbard visitors to consider medical evacuation insurance and to follow polar bear safety regulations.

Three free things

  1. Walk Longyearbyen's main street at midnight sun. The light is the attraction. Photo subject: Longyearbyen main street in low midnight light.
  2. Visit the Svalbard Church. It is a Church of Norway (Lutheran) church, free to enter as commonly described, and the official page says it is open to visitors at all hours except during services and events ; confirm on kirken.no/svalbard. Photo subject: Svalbard Church, Longyearbyen exterior.
  3. Watch the wake from the aft deck. It costs nothing, and it is where most bird sightings happen. Photo subject: the wake from the aft deck at 11 pm in midnight light.

Points primer

Flights to Oslo are the points play; the cruise fare is usually cash. Per our chart checked 2026-10-08, Flying Blue takes 1:1 transfers from Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt. Aeroplan takes 1:1 from Chase, Amex, Capital One and Bilt. British Airways takes 1:1 from Chase, Amex and Capital One. Virgin Atlantic takes 1:1 from Chase, Amex and Citi. SAS and Norwegian are not on our chart, so we state no transfer for them. Search award flights to Oslo (OSL) on the programs above, then price the Oslo to Longyearbyen leg in cash on SAS or Norwegian and compare totals. Full playbook in the full guide, chapter 7.

Fits and misfits

A nine-day expedition suits you if you like a daily plan that changes and a ship small enough to know the crew. It does not suit you if you must hit every landing on a list. Compare the three lines by their own pages: HX, Lindblad and Quark each describe small ships and Zodiac cruising, and each leaves the final route to the expedition team. Book early for July and August, and confirm every date on the line's page.

The honest negatives

Expedition cruising is expensive, and the fare buys a chance, not a promise. A landing can be cancelled for fog, ice, wind or a bear on the beach. Zodiac rides are cold and wet, and the Barents Sea can be rough on the open crossings between fjords. Longyearbyen is small, flights fill, and a delayed flight on embarkation day can strand you in town. If any of that rules you out, a coastal Norway sailing is the gentler way to see the same latitude.

What a typical day feels like

Mornings start early with the expedition leader's announcement and a Zodiac cruise or landing. Midday is lunch and a lecture on birds, ice or history. Afternoons repeat the pattern, and in midnight sun the best light often arrives well after dinner. Expect layers, rubber boots supplied or rented by the line, and a lot of waiting for conditions. Bring patience as well as a good camera, and let the guides decide when it is safe to step ashore.

Good to know before you go

Expedition routes follow ice and wildlife, not a brochure, and the line's captain and expedition leader can rewrite any day. Every date, rule and price here is as of 2026-10-14; confirm on the official page named beside it or in your booking before you sail.
