At a glance

  • Line: Costa Cruises, the Italian brand inside Carnival Corporation. Home page: https://www.costacruises.com/ (the US-facing page carries an en_US locale tag) .
  • Feel: Italian-style ship life: later dinners, a European passenger mix, announcements in several languages, English available.
  • Best for: curious travelers who want Mediterranean ports with a European flavor and do not need a US-style, all-English ship.
  • Typical homeports: Genoa, Savona and Civitavecchia (Rome) in Italy; Barcelona and Marseille; Caribbean and other seasonal bases.
  • Season pattern: Mediterranean roughly spring through autumn; winter moves to the Caribbean, Canary Islands, Gulf and elsewhere.

  • Watch: the Gulf. The State Department rates the UAE Level 3, Reconsider Travel, issued August 29, 2026 [read 2026-10-15, https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/united-arab-emirates-travel-advisory.html — Level 3, issued August 29, 2026].

Who it's for

Costa suits travelers who like the idea of Italy at sea: a long dinner, espresso, a mixed crowd of Italians, Spaniards, French, Germans and a smaller number of North Americans. It suits couples, multigenerational families and anyone comparing prices for a Mediterranean week. It does not suit travelers who want every announcement and show in English only, or who want a ship built around US loyalty perks. If you want the American-flavored sibling inside the same corporation, read our Carnival guide, and for the other big European line see MSC Cruises.

When to go

The Mediterranean season is the line's core. Late spring and early autumn usually mean milder weather and fewer school-holiday families; July and August are hottest and busiest, with the most children aboard. Winter itineraries shift toward warm-weather regions. Check the sailing calendar on https://www.costacruises.com/ for the dates that fit you.

Where it sails

As commonly described, Costa covers the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Atlantic islands, the Caribbean (including sailings that start in the French Caribbean or Dominican Republic; check travel.state.gov for the Dominican Republic before you book), South America in the northern winter, and seasonal Gulf and Asia programs. Which regions run in a given year changes; confirm on the destinations pages of the official site.

Rough cost, three ways

The points angle

You cannot transfer bank points to a Costa fare, so the angle is indirect. Pay the fare with a card that earns well on travel, check your card's travel portal and any annual travel credit for cruise eligibility, and use points for the parts of the trip that do transfer: flights to the port (for example Aeroplan, Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic from Chase, Amex, Citi or Capital One partners on our chart checked 2026-10-08) and hotels the night before and after. The full guide includes an award-search walkthrough and a points-versus-cash rule.

Three free or low-cost things

  1. Walk the old harbor in Genoa. Free to stroll the Porto Antico waterfront before or after your sail.
  2. Cathedral and old lanes in Palma. Entering the cathedral area may cost; the seafront promenade below it is free. Going to Mass at Palma Cathedral: see the cathedral's official page, https://masstimes.org and our pilgrimages guide for times; we have not confirmed times.
  3. Barcelona's waterfront and Gothic Quarter. Wandering is free and walkable from the central port area by shuttle or taxi. See our Barcelona guide.

What to expect on board

Expect later meal times than on many US ships, more cafe and espresso culture, multilingual announcements and entertainment aimed at a mixed European audience. Currency and billing are typically euro-based on Mediterranean sailings. Dress codes, theme nights and the exact timing of dinner vary by ship and sailing, so read the daily program in the Costa app. If you are used to a US ship, the biggest adjustment is rhythm: the evening starts later, the sea day is slower and the ship fills with conversation in Italian, Spanish, French, German and English.

Before you book, check these four things

First, compare the total price, not the headline fare: add the service charge, taxes and the extras you really want. Second, confirm the departure city and how you will get there, because a cheap cruise from a far homeport can lose its savings in flights. Third, read the port list and look for overnight stays, tender ports and long sea stretches. Fourth, check passport validity and the entry pages for every country you visit, starting with the State Department pages at https://travel.state.gov/.

Quick honest take

Strengths: Mediterranean-focused itineraries, a distinctive Italian atmosphere and a wide range of ports. Weak spots: details such as packages, fees and loyalty are harder for US readers to read in advance, English programming varies, and the fleet is changing as some ships move toward Carnival (as commonly described; confirm on https://www.carnival.com/cruise-ships and https://www.costacruises.com/ships.html). Our advice is to price the same week on two lines and compare the final totals, not the base fares.

Want the whole playbook?

The $4.99 full guide covers fleet classes, cabins, dining, fees, C|Club, kids, booking order, a day-by-day representative Western Mediterranean week, hotels, points, a checklist, a cost sheet and a printable plan.

This is the free lite guide. The full day-by-day guide, with maps, photo stops, rain plans and the points playbook, is part of PerkJolt All-Access.

Good to know before you go

We checked this guide against official pages on 2026-10-15. Costa's home page is confirmed, but its detail pages (fleet, loyalty, FAQ, terms) are not confirmed as of 2026-10-15, so fares, fees, packages, itineraries and port calls here are described as "typically" and pointed to the official page. Confirm every price, fee, policy and port call on costacruises.com, in your booking or in the Costa app before you sail; ports and itineraries can change after you book.
