Western Caribbean from Tampa (Carnival / Royal Caribbean)

At a glance
- Departure: Port Tampa Bay, Channelside District, downtown Tampa. The port lists three cruise terminals: Terminal 2 (651 Channelside Drive), Terminal 3 (815 Channelside Drive) and Terminal 6 (1333 McKay Street) (checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Airport: Tampa International (TPA) is about 15 minutes from the Channelside District (checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Lines covered: Carnival and Royal Caribbean. Both are among the five lines the port lists as homeported in Tampa (checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Representative 7-night shape (representative, not a published sailing): Tampa, sea, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatan or Grand Cayman, sea, sea, Tampa (eight days, seven nights, three ports of call). A 5-night variant swaps in Cozumel plus Progreso or Grand Cayman.
- Sleep downtown the night before. Baggage cannot be stored at the terminals for early arrivals (checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Book ship excursions in Roatan first; DIY there needs care (see the safety line).
- A common mistake: treating the ship's all-aboard time as "the time the ship leaves" instead of the time you must be back.
- No cabin fares appear here. They change daily; use the line's booking page.
Who this is for
First-time cruisers on Florida's Gulf side, drive-in guests from central and west Florida, and travelers who want a short, warm-water week without flying to Miami or Fort Lauderdale. It is a poor fit if you want Eastern Caribbean islands, which sail from other ports, or if you dislike sea days. This representative 7-night shape has three sea days, and the first is a long Gulf crossing.
The route in 300 words
Tampa is a Gulf port, so the western Caribbean is a natural direction. A 7-night week typically spends the first full day at sea crossing the Gulf of Mexico, then reaches Mexico's Yucatan coast. Cozumel is an island with three cruise piers; your itinerary and daily program say which one you use. Costa Maya (Mahahual) is a purpose-built pier with a small village beyond it. The third port is commonly Roatan, Honduras, or Grand Cayman. At Grand Cayman, ships typically anchor and send passengers ashore by tender; confirm in the daily program. Not confirmed on https://www.caymanport.com/ as of 2026-10-16. Two more sea days bring you back to Tampa.
Carnival's Tampa page lists Carnival Legend, Carnival Paradise and Carnival Spirit as homeported in Tampa, as listed on https://www.carnival.com/cruise-from/tampa.aspx as of 2026-10-16. That page does not tie any ship to this route, so this guide never names a ship for the sailing: use "the ship on your booking." Royal Caribbean's Tampa page confirms Royal Caribbean offers cruises from Tampa, but its ships and itineraries are Not confirmed on https://www.royalcaribbean.com/cruise-from/tampa-florida as of 2026-10-16. As commonly described, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge limits which ships can sail from Tampa, so confirm with the port; Not confirmed on https://www.porttb.com/cruise as of 2026-10-16.
A 5-night variant typically drops one sea day and one port: Tampa, sea, Cozumel, Progreso or Grand Cayman, sea, Tampa. Carnival's western Caribbean page lists Cozumel, Costa Maya, Progreso, Grand Cayman and Isla Tropicale (Roatan) among its ports, as listed on https://www.carnival.com/cruise-to/western-caribbean-cruises.aspx as of 2026-10-16.
Whichever version you pick, the pattern is the same: one night of hotel in Tampa or a drive-in morning, a long first sea day to settle in, two or three port days that each need one decision (ship excursion or DIY), and an early return. Read chapter 1 for the day-by-day, chapter 3 for pier details and chapter 9 for the cost sheet.

Entry and document rules
U.S. citizens on a closed-loop cruise (starting and ending in the same U.S. port) have special document rules, but the current wording is Not confirmed on https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/western-hemisphere-travel-initiative as of 2026-10-16. A valid passport is a prudent document for anyone to carry, especially if you must fly home from a foreign port after a missed sailing. Non-U.S. citizens should ask the line about visas. The port itself says to contact your cruise line for requirements (checked Oct 16, 2026). Mexico and Honduras set their own entry rules; check each government's tourism page for the current wording.
