Norwegian Dawn, Star, Sun and Sky: The Older Mid-Size Ships Compared

Travel scene

Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Star, Norwegian Sun and the question mark called Norwegian Sky: what to know in five minutes.

These are the smaller, older ships in Norwegian's fleet, and they feel nothing like the newest megaships. If you want a ship with a familiar shape, a few big public rooms, an atrium and itineraries that reach places the giants skip, they are worth a look. If you want waterslides, racetracks and a dozen specialty restaurants, they are not.

At a glance

  • Dawn: built 2002, refurbished 2024, 2,290 guests at double occupancy, 965 ft long, 92,250 gross tons
  • Star: built 2001, refurbished 2021, 2,298 guests, 965 ft, 91,740 gross tons
  • Sun: built 2001, refurbished 2024, 1,878 guests, 848 ft, 78,309 gross tons
  • Sky: the ncl.com Sky page returned the general fleet overview, and Sky was not in that fleet table on 2026-10-17. We could not confirm its current status. Check ncl.com before assuming anything about it.
  • Homeports: the ship pages list regions, not departure ports. Pick your sailing on ncl.com and read the port fields there.
  • Typically book ahead: specialty dining, shows with limited seating and shore excursions. Check the app once your booking opens.
  • Cards: Norwegian has no points transfer partner among the big bank programs. You can pay with Chase Travel, Capital One Travel or Amex Travel if they sell your sailing, or use a card's cruise credit.
  • The one thing first-timers get wrong: assuming "Free at Sea" means everything is free. It does not, and the daily service charge is typically separate (as of 2026-10-17; confirm on ncl.com's service-charge FAQ).

Three free things aboard

These are things we believe are included in the base fare. They are labelled "included as of 2026-10-17 — confirm" because Norwegian can change what is free.

  1. Main dining rooms and the buffet café. The ship pages describe complimentary dining alongside the specialty restaurants. Included as of 2026-10-17 — confirm on your sailing's page. Photo subject: a generic cruise ship main dining room set for dinner with white tablecloths and a window to the sea.
  2. Pool decks and the open-air hot tubs. The Dawn page lists the Oasis Pool with hot tubs, and the Sun page lists the Sun Pool. Included as of 2026-10-17 — confirm. Photo subject: a ship's pool deck at dusk with empty loungers and a lit hot tub.
  3. Theater shows. The Star and Sun pages name the Stardust Theater. Whether each show needs a reservation, and whether any are paid, is something to confirm in the app. Included as of 2026-10-17 — confirm. Photo subject: an empty cruise-ship theater with red velvet seats and a lit stage.

How the four compare

Dawn and Star are near-twins: similar length, similar guest counts, a year apart. The Star page names a Thermal Suite and an adults-only retreat called Spice H2O, the Dawn page names a Moderno churrascaria and La Cucina. Sun is 848 ft and 1,878 guests against 965 ft and 2,290 or 2,298 for the pair (figures from the ship pages stamped above), so it should feel smaller, though we have no deck-by-deck figures to prove how that plays out. Sky is the open question. In our own words: older Norwegian ships are sometimes described as having once included drinks in the fare, and Sky has a reputation for that. We could not verify that from an official page, so treat it as a rumour, not a promise.

Cabin tips (reasoning, not fact)

Pick a cabin by what is above and below it, not by the category name. A balcony cabin directly under a pool deck or a nightclub is a gamble. A cabin near the middle of the ship moves least in rough water. Aft cabins can feel engine and wake vibration. Our deck-plan reasoning is in Chapter 3 of the full guide, and the real deck plans are on ncl.com. Insider move: open the deck plan for your ship and check what sits on the deck above and below your cabin number before you click buy.

Cost basics

Free at Sea Plus is listed at $49.99 per person per day as an upgrade from base Free at Sea . The daily service charge and deposit terms were on pages we could not open, so the rate is blank here. Fill the blanks: fare, service charge, flights, hotel the night before, excursions, drinks you will actually buy. Check this on the official page before you book.

Points in one paragraph

There is no Norwegian transfer partner. Pay the fare through your card's travel portal if the sailing appears there, then compare to the cash price on ncl.com. Use points for the flights to the homeport instead, where the transfer charts do work. Our own rule of thumb is to treat a point as roughly one cent and walk away from any redemption that falls well below that.

Packing basics

Passport with six months of validity if you leave the country, printed boarding documents, a small day bag, soft shoes for ports, a light layer for air-conditioned rooms and a power strip without surge protection if the line allows it. Check the ship's rules on ncl.com. Photo stop: the sail-away from the top deck, forward or aft depending on the port, an hour before sunset.

What is not worth it

It is not worth paying for a package you will not use, and it is not worth booking a cheap inside cabin on the same deck as a lounge. Compare the Free at Sea terms with what you drink and eat. The full guide has the splurge-versus-save table, the points playbook and a one-page pre-cruise checklist.

Good to know before you go

We checked the facts below on 2026-10-17 against Norwegian Cruise Line's own pages. Fares, fees, itineraries, port calls, drink packages and policies change often and can change after you book. Confirm everything on ncl.com or in your booking and the line's app before you sail.
