Chesapeake Bay and the Intracoastal small-ship cruise

At a glance
- What it is: a small-ship coastal sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, round trip from Baltimore, Maryland. American Cruise Lines lists it as a 9 day / 8 night itinerary (as of 2026-10-20; confirm on the line's Chesapeake Bay Cruise page). (checked Oct 20, 2026)
- Ports on the line's page: Baltimore, Yorktown/Williamsburg (Virginia), St. Michaels, Annapolis, and back to Baltimore, with two days cruising the bay.
- Best months: the line's listed dates fall in spring (May) and fall (September and October). Dates vary by year; confirm on the booking page.
- Passport: not needed for a US-only itinerary, but bring government photo ID for the ship and your flights.
- Pace: gentle. Most days are a morning and afternoon ashore with short walks, and the ship often docks right in town.
- Fare idea: the line's page shows "from" fares per departure. Those change; write yours in the cost box below.
Three free things
- Walk Yorktown's waterfront and the free Yorktown trolley. The line labels the Yorktown Trolley and the Historic Yorktown Walk complimentary on its page. Check your booking for what is included on your date.
- Poke around the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels. The line lists it as a complimentary excursion and says the ship docks at the museum. Not on a ship? The museum sells tickets at visit.cbmm.org. (checked Oct 20, 2026)
- Stroll Annapolis on foot. The historic district is compact. The line lists a Naval Academy experience and a harbor cruise as complimentary; independent walking costs nothing.
Rough cost, three ways
Fill the blanks from the official pages named. Do not rely on our numbers for your sailing.

How the week runs
The line's current page shows a nine-day pattern (as of 2026-10-20; itineraries vary by date, so confirm on the line's page or in your booking before you sail):
- Day 1, Baltimore: the listed package includes a hotel night in Baltimore the night before boarding. An upgrade to the Four Seasons Hotel Baltimore is offered, priced by phone and reserved at least 30 days ahead.
- Day 2: board in Baltimore and cruise the bay past the Eastern Shore, lighthouses and working waterfronts.
- Day 3, Yorktown/Williamsburg: the "Historic Triangle." Choose Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement or the Yorktown battlefield and museum.
- Day 4: a full day cruising the bay. Talks, entertainment, a book.
- Days 5 and 6, St. Michaels: two days in a small town: maritime museum, rum tasting, a Miles River cruise, a trip to Easton, and a Harriet Tubman experience.
- Day 7, Annapolis: Naval Academy, State House, harbor.
- Day 8, Baltimore: Inner Harbor, aquarium, history center.
- Day 9: breakfast aboard and disembark.
Who it suits
Travelers who like American history, boats, small towns and unhurried days, and who would rather unpack once. It is not a party ship and not a bargain-basement cruise; the fare is higher per day than a big-ship mainstream cruise, but the line says dining, onboard gratuities, port charges and wine and beer with lunch and dinner are in the fare (as of 2026-10-20; confirm on the line's FAQ page). (checked Oct 20, 2026)
Five things to do before you book
- Pick the date by season, not by price alone. The line's listed sailings are spring and fall; compare the "from" fares for each on the Chesapeake Bay Cruise page.
- Decide on the hotel night. The package describes one pre-cruise night in Baltimore; ask the line which hotel is yours and what is included.
- Check the cancellation table. The line's page shows percent refunds by days before embarkation, plus a $250 per-person administrative charge on refunds. Read it before you pay. (checked Oct 20, 2026)
- Book flights into Baltimore (BWI) only after the line confirms your embarkation time. The FAQ says boarding runs 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and guests should arrive by 12:30 p.m. Fly in the day before.
- Reserve "Signature" excursions early. The line says Signature excursions must be reserved in advance by phone.
What is not worth it
Do not pay for hotel upgrades or excursions in the first week of booking just to "lock in". Ask what the fare already covers first. Skip a rental car if you take the ship and a taxi or rail from BWI.
Free versus paid, in plain terms
The line's FAQ sorts excursions into "Featured" (included), "Premium" and "Signature" (extra cost). So the simplest way to keep costs down is to build each day around the Featured and complimentary items listed on the booking page, and to treat Signature items as a deliberate splurge. Ask the line for the current list for your date, because the lists shift between sailings.
Points angle in one line
Fly into BWI on an airline you hold points with, and use hotel points for the pre- and post-cruise nights; the cruise fare itself is usually cash. The full guide has the transfer chart and a points-versus-cash rule.
What the full guide adds
Day-by-day plans with clock times, photo stops and rainy-day backups; the Baltimore terminal and how to reach it; each port's dock and walking distances; pre-booking priorities; a cost sheet; printable day pages and a packing list.
