Travel scene

At a glance

  • Ship: AmaMagna, AmaWaterways' wide-body river ship. 443 ft long, 72 ft wide, 98 staterooms, 196 guests, 70 crew .
  • Why she is different: the line says she is twice the width of a traditional European river ship . That means more public space per guest and four places to eat.
  • Where she sails: the Danube. Pages we opened list her on Grand Danube, Gems of Southeast Europe and the wine-themed "Magna on the Danube" sailings .
  • What is included: onboard meals, wine, beer and soft drinks with meals, specialty coffee and tea, a daily Sip & Sail cocktail hour, Wi-Fi, and shore experiences .
  • What is not: airfare, stateroom upgrades, optional land programs, and gratuities, which the FAQ says may be charged additionally .
  • Port charges are built into the fare: $250 per person on a 7-night 2026 sailing, $500 on the 14-night Grand Danube .
  • Solo? The single supplement is 50% of the double fare in a stateroom and 100% in a suite .

Is she for you?

Book AmaMagna if you want a river cruise that feels less like a corridor and more like a small hotel: a pool and whirlpool on the Sun Deck, a wellness studio with two treatment rooms, a full-size pickleball court, and four restaurants including an open-kitchen tasting menu. Skip her if you want the smallest, most intimate river boat, or if you need the Sun Deck and have limited mobility, because the elevator does not reach it.

The four restaurants

The Main Restaurant is the fine-dining room. The Chef's Table is a multi-course tasting menu with an open kitchen. Jimmy's is family-style and communal. Al Fresco is vegetable-forward with panoramic views . Reservations for the Chef's Table are worth asking about on day one. We could not find the booking rules on the pages we opened, so ask the Cruise Manager when you board.

Cabins in one paragraph

The deck plan shows four stateroom categories on the Violin Deck: Owner's Suite (710 sq ft), Grand Suite (474), Category SA (355) and Category AA (252), all with an outside balcony . The FAQ says there are eight categories in total and that sizes run 355 to 710 sq ft, which does not match the 252 figure, so confirm the exact size of the category you are booking. We give no cabin prices, because they vary by sailing.

What a typical day looks like

The line says each day offers up to six expert-led experiences with gentle, regular and active options for most . In practice that means you pick a walking tour at your pace after breakfast, return to the ship for lunch, and decide between a second outing or time on board in the afternoon. Evenings are typically smart-casual; a jacket for men is welcome but not required . Daily dress for ports is casual.

Three free things to do

  1. Join the morning Wellness Host class. Fitness, stretch and meditation classes run daily on most sailings and cost nothing extra .
  2. Try the pickleball court at an off hour. It is full-size and on board. Ask the crew about equipment.
  3. Take the included shore experience that matches your pace. Most days offer gentle, regular and active options at no extra charge.

What is not worth it

Do not pay for a land extension just because it is offered. Optional land programs are not included in the fare, and the Danube cities on the standard route are rich enough that most first-timers are better served by one extra night in Budapest or Vienna, booked on their own. Do not assume a premium beverage is included: beer and wine with lunch and dinner and the Sip & Sail hour are included, premium beverages are extra .

Points in one minute

River cruise fares are rarely bookable with points directly. The practical points plays are (a) a card portal or cruise credit toward the fare, if your card offers it (check your issuer's travel page for current terms), and (b) flights to the Danube. For flights, use the transfer chart in the full guide: for example Amex to British Airways 1:1, Chase to United 1:1, Capital One to Flying Blue 1:1, Citi to Flying Blue 1:1. Search Budapest, Vienna and Munich as gateways.

Who should wait

If you are choosing between her and a smaller river ship because you care about the lowest possible fare, remember that AmaWaterways lists AmaMagna among several ships on a given route and the entry fare belongs to the entry-level stateroom . Compare the same dates and the same category, not headline prices.

Before you book: three questions

Ask your advisor or the line these three things, in writing, before paying a deposit. First, which ship is assigned to your exact departure date, since AmaMagna is not on every Danube sailing. Second, the exact size and location of the stateroom category you are choosing, given that the line's own pages show two different minimum sizes. Third, what gratuities are expected and how they are paid, since the FAQ says they are not included in the fare. With those three answered, the rest of the trip is mostly pleasant decisions about which tour to take and where to eat.
