  • Promise: Pick the right one of four small-to-mid-size luxury ships before you fall for an itinerary.
  • Trip length: Sample 2027 sailings on these ships run 7 to 12 days (as of 2026-10-21; confirm on the sailing's page on silversea.com or in your booking).
  • Best months: Depends on the ship's region. Alaska sample sailing is August 2027; Japan sample is July 2027; Atlantic crossing sample is late August 2027.
  • Budget band: You fill this in: fare (from silversea.com) + flights + pre/post hotel + shore excursions you choose. The fare is all-inclusive for drinks and onboard gratuities on Classic cruises, which keeps the onboard line short.
  • Best for: Travelers who want butler service and included drinks on a ship that holds fewer than 640 guests.

At a glance

  • Four ships, two sizes: Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper carry 392 guests each; Silver Muse carries 632 and Silver Spirit carries 636.
  • Silver Shadow was built in 2000 and last refurbished in 2019.
  • Silver Whisper was built in 2001 and last refurbished in 2024.
  • Silver Spirit was built in 2009 and last refurbished in 2026; the page highlights a new open-air Mediterranean restaurant called Riviera.
  • Silver Muse was built in 2017 and last refurbished in 2025.
  • The all-inclusive fare on Classic cruises covers butler service, an in-suite bar, unlimited champagne, spirits and up to 50 Silversea Cellar wines, and onboard gratuities.
  • Shore excursions, extended land experiences and pre/post-voyage air, hotels and transfers are bought separately.
  • Cruise lines are paid through card travel portals or card cruise credits; points do not transfer to a cruise line.

Which of the four is yours?

Start with size, because it decides almost everything else. Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper are the small pair: 392 guests and 302 crew each, at 28,258 tons. Silver Muse and Silver Spirit are the larger pair: 632 guests with 415 crew at 40,700 tons for Muse , and 636 guests with 415 crew at 39,519 tons for Spirit.

The practical difference is the dining list. Muse lists nine venues, including Kaiseki, Spaccanapoli (Neapolitan pizza), Silver Note (a supper club) and Arts Cafe. Spirit lists nine as well, with Seishin for Japanese food, the new Riviera, and the S.A.L.T. Lab for hands-on cooking classes. Whisper and Shadow list four: The Restaurant, La Terrazza, The Grill and La Dame.

If you want the smallest, quietest ship and do not mind a shorter restaurant list, look at Whisper or Shadow. If you want more variety to fill a 12-night voyage, look at Muse or Spirit.

Note on class names: Silversea's fleet page sorts all four into "Classic ships" and does not use class names. The Shadow page names a Shadow class shared with Whisper , and the Muse page calls Muse the first of the Muse class. This guide uses "the four classic ships" as shorthand.

Three free-things-style highlights

1. Unlimited pour included in the fare. On Classic cruises the fare includes champagne, spirits and up to 50 wines from the Silversea Cellar, plus coffee, specialty coffees, fine teas, sodas and sparkling waters. That means you do not need to buy a drink package, which removes a decision most cruisers spend a week regretting. Ask on day one which wines fall inside the Cellar list so you can order from it by habit.

2. Onboard gratuities, port taxes and fees are inside the fare. The same page lists "onboard gratuities, port taxes, and fees" as included. When you compare a Silversea fare to another line, add the other line's gratuities and drink packages to it, or the comparison is not fair.

3. Self-service launderettes and supplies. The fare includes self-service launderettes and supplies. On a 12-day sailing that means a carry-on is enough, and that saves a checked-bag fee on many airlines (confirm your own airline's rule).

What to book first

  1. Pick the sailing, then the ship. Sample 2027 sailings show how differently the ships are deployed. Silver Whisper has a 7-day Vancouver to Seward (Anchorage) sailing on August 12 to 19, 2027, with Ketchikan, Tracy Arm, Juneau, Skagway, Icy Bay and Valdez (as of 2026-10-21; confirm on https://www.silversea.com/destinations/alaska-cruise/vancouver-to-seward-anchorage-alaska-wh270812007.html or in your booking before you sail). Silver Muse has a 12-day Tokyo round trip on July 3 to 15, 2027 via Kobe, Hiroshima, Busan, Sakaiminato, Kanazawa, Niigata and Hakodate (as of 2026-10-21; confirm on https://www.silversea.com/destinations/asia-cruise/tokyo-to-tokyo-sm270703012.html or in your booking before you sail). Silver Shadow has a 12-day Lisbon to New York sailing on August 21 to September 2, 2027 via the Azores (as of 2026-10-21; confirm on https://www.silversea.com/destinations/transoceanic-cruise/lisbon-to-new-york-ny-ss270821012.html or in your booking before you sail).
  2. Choose the suite category before the suite. Ten categories exist on Muse and Spirit; Whisper and Shadow list nine, with no Panorama Suite on their pages.
  3. Reserve specialty dining on day one through the app or the front desk, especially the smaller venues, because the venues are small on a ship with 392 to 636 guests. The reservation rules are not published on the ship pages, so confirm them in your booking or the Silversea app before you sail.
  4. Book shore excursions early where they involve flights, trains or overnights. Silversea's purchase terms say stricter excursions may require cancellation up to 30 days before sailing to avoid penalties.
  5. Book flights with points where it helps. The Points chapter in the full guide maps which program fits which leg.

Skip this

  • Do not buy a drinks package on a Classic cruise fare without first reading what the fare already includes.
  • Do not pay extra for the largest suite category just for the name. A Vista or Classic Veranda placed well beats a Royal placed under the pool deck or beside the theater.
  • Do not assume the Last-Minute Fare is flexible. It is non-refundable and requires paying the full amount to secure a suite.

What the full guide adds

The full guide covers all four ships chapter by chapter: a one-page comparison; what to know about decks and where public rooms sit; suites to book and avoid; dining and what to reserve first; shows and activities; pools and quiet decks; ports; points and booking; an insider's checklist; a fill-in cost sheet; and a packing list with a printable page.

This is the free lite guide. The full day-by-day guide, with maps, photo stops, rain plans and the points playbook, is part of PerkJolt All-Access.

Good to know before you go

As of 2026-10-21, Silversea's ship pages and fare pages show the facts below. Package prices, gratuities, itineraries and port calls move often, so confirm them on the line's official page or in your booking and the Silversea app before you sail.
