Is the Algarve worth a day trip from Lisbon?
Short answer: Usually no. Fast trains from Lisbon Oriente to Faro take about 3 hours, and Intercity trains take about 3½ hours. (checked Oct 12, 2026) That puts a day trip at roughly 6–7 hours of transit for a few hours on the coast. If you only have one day, it's possible. If you can spare one night, it's much better.
The details
- Train is the easiest way. Lisbon Oriente to Faro is 302 km (188 miles) by rail. Trains run around 5 times a day, and two of them are 200 km/h Alfa Pendulars. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Fares and exact times vary by date. Check them at cp.pt, the Comboios de Portugal site.
- Only about five departures a day. That makes the last train back to Lisbon the most important thing to check. Look it up before you book anything. If you miss it, a bus is the fallback, but check that too.
- Which station? Trains to Faro leave from Lisbon Oriente, 8 km northeast of the city centre. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Allow time to get there from your hotel.
- Other Algarve towns. Fast trains also serve other Algarve stations such as Lagos and Albufeira. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Lagos usually needs a change of train, and the Albufeira-area station sits outside town. Both add time, so check the journey on cp.pt.
- Driving. It's typically about 2½–3 hours each way without traffic, plus motorway tolls and summer parking. A car gives you more flexibility on the coast, but you'll drive about 5–6 hours that day. Check live traffic and toll costs on the day.
- Buses. Long-distance coaches (Rede Expressos is the main operator) also run Lisbon–Faro. Check redeexpressos.pt for current times and prices.
Is it worth it?
Worth it if:
- It's your only chance to see the south coast.
- You want one specific thing, such as the cliffs and coves around Lagos.
- You're happy with a very early start and a late return.
Skip it if:
- You want a relaxed beach day. With about 6 hours of transit you'll get a short one.
- You want to see the Benagil sea cave. Tour boats run only in good sea conditions, and rules limit how you can visit. Last we checked, you can only go in on a licensed boat or guided kayak or paddleboard tour. You can't swim in or land on the sand inside. Confirm the current rules with your operator.
- You're traveling in the cooler months and need daylight and calm seas.
If you're short on time, closer coastal trips from Lisbon, such as Cascais or the Arrábida coast, cost far less time in transit. Check the official Visit Portugal site (visitportugal.com) for ideas.
Tips
- Book a morning train out and check the last train back first.
- Pick one base, such as Lagos or Faro, and don't try to cover the whole coast.
- Pack light. You'll be walking, and you won't be back at your hotel.
- Book a boat or cave tour ahead, because small-boat spots sell out in summer and cancel in rough seas.
- If you can, stay one night and treat the Algarve as its own short trip.
FAQ
How long is the train from Lisbon to Faro?
The fastest Alfa Pendular trains take about 3 hours, and Intercity trains take around 3 hours 40 minutes. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Times differ slightly by direction and date. Check the current timetable at cp.pt before you plan your day.
Can I do the Algarve as a day trip by car?
Yes. It's typically about 2½–3 hours each way if traffic is light. You'll pay motorway tolls and may struggle to park in summer. The long drive back is tiring after a beach day, so check the tolls and traffic on the day.
Which Algarve town is best for a day trip?
Lagos is a popular pick because it has cliffs, small beaches and a walkable old town in one place. Faro is easiest to reach, but it's a less dramatic coast. Check the train route and any change before you commit.
Can I swim into the Benagil Cave?
No. Swimming into the cave and landing on the sand inside are not allowed. Visits are by licensed boat or guided kayak or paddleboard tour, and boat visits inside are brief. Rules change, so confirm with the operator.
Is it better to stay overnight?
For most people, yes. One night means you skip the 6-hour transit squeeze and can see the coast in the morning or evening light. If you can't spare a night, a nearer coast such as Cascais is usually the better use of your day.
