Can I ride-share from HNL to the North Shore?

Short answer: Yes. Rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft are allowed to operate at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on a permanent basis. A North Shore trip is a long one, roughly 30 miles each way. Your outbound ride is easy to get. A ride back to the airport later is the part that can be hard.

The details

  • It's allowed. Uber and Lyft pilot-tested airport pickups starting in late 2017. Rules approved later let any licensed ride-hailing company apply for a permit from the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
  • Pickup is at designated spots only. Drivers can't solicit riders or wait on airport property without a pre-arranged customer. Drivers who pick up outside the designated areas can be cited. So request your ride once you have your bags and are ready to walk out.
  • The pickup spots move. The state has added pickup zones over time. One example is the second-level center median outside Lobby 5. The state has also said that pickup locations are subject to relocation as airport construction proceeds. Follow the pin and signs in your app for your terminal, not an older guide.
  • Busy hours. The state has noted that pickup areas get most congested between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Allow extra time to find your driver then. Flight-arrival rushes can also push prices up.
  • Distance and time. The North Shore is roughly 30 miles from HNL, depending on where you're going. Typically that's 45 minutes to an hour with light traffic. It can take well over an hour on weekday rush hours and Friday afternoons. Check your app's estimate for your exact address.
  • Cost. We don't have an official fare to quote. Rideshare prices change with demand, and a cross-island trip costs more than a ride to Waikīkī. Your app shows a price before you confirm, so check it there. Fares can change while you wait.

The catch: getting back

The North Shore has far fewer drivers than Honolulu. Late-evening rides back to the airport can mean long waits, pricey fares or no cars at all. This is the usual North Shore rideshare complaint. It matters most if you have an early flight.

If you stay on the North Shore for your whole trip, you only need the outbound ride and a plan for the return. If you're just visiting for a day, think about:

  • a rental car, which gives you freedom on the North Shore
  • a pre-booked private transfer or guided tour
  • TheBus, which is cheap but slow. There's no direct route from the airport, so you'd transfer. Check routes and fares at TheBus's official site.

Tips

  • Pre-book your return. If you have a flight out, line up your ride to HNL the day before, and leave a big time buffer. Check the app for scheduled-ride options.
  • Ask about gear. Surfboards, bikes and oversized bags may not fit in a standard car. Pick an XL option, or message the driver.
  • Check the pickup spot while you're at baggage claim. Look at the app's pin before you walk out. Pins and curb signs get updated.
  • Avoid peak traffic. Friday afternoons heading north and Sunday afternoons heading south are slow. Weekday mornings are smoother.
  • Confirm the airport's current rules. The Hawaii DOT Airports Division's HNL ground transportation page is the official place to check for pickup changes.

FAQ

Do Uber and Lyft pick up at Honolulu's airport?

Yes. Rideshare companies with a Hawaii DOT permit can pick up there. Pickups happen at designated areas on the second-level median curb. That was the original setup, and the state has since added more zones. Use the pin in your app for your terminal.

How long is the ride from HNL to the North Shore?

It's roughly 30 miles. Typically that's 45 minutes to an hour, longer in rush hour or on Friday afternoons. Your app will show a live estimate for your destination. We couldn't find an official drive-time figure, so treat any number as an estimate.

Can I wait for a driver at the curb before I'm ready?

No. Drivers can't sit in the airport pickup area without a rider assigned. Collect your bags first, then request the ride. Drivers who pick up outside the designated areas can be cited, so they'll direct you to the correct spot.

Is it hard to get a ride back from the North Shore?

It can be. There are fewer drivers there, so waits are longer and prices can jump, especially late at night. If you have a flight to catch, pre-book a ride or a transfer. Don't count on an app request at the last minute.

Is a rental car better than rideshare for the North Shore?

For a one-day trip across several beaches and towns, a car is usually more convenient, since rideshare availability thins out away from Haleʻiwa. For a single-destination stay, rideshare is simpler. It saves you the parking and the airport rental-car lines.
