How do I get around Bangkok: Grab, BTS and taxis?

Short answer: Mix them. Take the BTS Skytrain (or the MRT) for anything near a station. Switch to Grab when it's raining, late, or you're carrying bags. Flag a metered taxi only if the driver agrees to use the meter. Most trips are cheap, so the real cost is time in traffic.

The details

Grab (ride-hailing app). Grab is a superapp offering ride-hailing, taxis, motorbikes and vans, plus food and parcel delivery. You download it from the App Store or Google Play, sign up with your mobile number and verify by SMS . Two options matter most:

  • JustGrab: It assigns the nearest taxi or car at an upfront fare .
  • GrabTaxi: It books licensed taxis without fare negotiation . You typically pay the meter plus a small booking fee. Compare it with the car options in the app before you confirm.

Surge pricing can make car fares jump in heavy rain or at rush hour. Check the price on screen before you confirm.

Metered taxis. Fares are set by the Department of Land Transport. Under the update approved in early 2023, the meter starts at 40 baht for the first kilometer, then 6.50 baht/km for kilometers 2 to 10, and 7 baht/km for 11 to 20 . Older guides still quote the previous 35-baht start. Extras you may see:

  • Taxis registered at Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports can charge an extra 50 baht .
  • A taxi called through a communication centre can add a 20-baht service charge .
  • Expressway tolls are normally paid by you on top of the meter.

BTS Skytrain. The Sukhumvit and Silom lines (plus the short Gold Line) cover many hotel, shopping and sightseeing areas. Fares depend on distance. Last we checked, they ran from the high teens up to the mid-60s in baht. A one-day pass was roughly 150 baht and BTS-only. The Rabbit card was roughly 200 baht to start, including a non-refundable fee. Confirm current prices on the BTS operator's site (bts.co.th). Machines take cash and, at many stations, Thai QR payment.

Paying for rail is not the same on every line.

  • The BTS gates are the awkward ones. When the Airport Rail Link adopted contactless cards, reports noted that only the Green and Gold lines remained without EMV support . Last we checked, BTS still needed a Rabbit card, a pass or a single ticket. Look at the gate readers before you assume your card will work.
  • At all Airport Rail Link stations, riders can tap a contactless card at the gate, and the system supports Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay . Tokens and existing smart cards remain available .
  • MRT lines have also adopted contactless cards. Contactless acceptance varies by card and issuer, so carry a backup plus some cash for tokens.

Tips

  • Match the mode to the trip. Use rail for station-to-station trips in daylight. Use Grab for door-to-door, rain, late nights or luggage.
  • Say "meter, please" before you get in. If the driver won't run it, get out and flag another. Complaints can be reported to the Department of Land Transport (hotline 1584).
  • Screenshot your Grab pickup point and plate. Check the driver photo and plate before you get in.
  • Use the Airport Rail Link for the airport. From Suvarnabhumi it runs to Phaya Thai, where you can change to the BTS. Taxis from the airport rank add the surcharge above and tolls, and traffic can make them slow.
  • Check the gate before you tap. Some gates have separate readers for cards and for contactless bank cards. Use the same card to enter and exit.

FAQ

Is Grab or a taxi cheaper in Bangkok?

It varies. A metered taxi in normal traffic is often cheaper than a car booked through an app. Grab gives you an upfront price and avoids meter disputes. Compare the in-app quote with the GrabTaxi option, and expect surge pricing in rain or rush hour.

Can I pay for the BTS Skytrain with my credit card?

Last we checked, no. BTS gates took a Rabbit card, a one-day pass or a single ticket. The MRT and Airport Rail Link accept contactless cards. Confirm on the BTS operator's site (bts.co.th) before relying on a card.

Do Bangkok taxis have to use the meter?

Yes. Fares are metered and set by the Department of Land Transport. Some drivers quote flat fares at tourist spots. You can decline, flag another cab, or use Grab. The 1584 hotline takes complaints.

Is Grab legal and safe in Bangkok?

Grab operates openly in Bangkok and is widely used by visitors. The app shows the driver and vehicle details, which helps. Take normal precautions: match the plate and share your trip with someone you trust.

Is the BTS worth it for a short trip?

Often yes, if your hotel and sights are near stations. A single ticket is simple for one or two rides. A one-day pass or Rabbit card makes sense if you'll ride several times, but compare your likely number of trips with the current prices.
