Is Lisbon good for kids?
Short answer: Yes. Lisbon is a good family city, with an aquarium, a zoo and a hands-on science museum, plus cheap or free transit for young kids. The weak spots are the hills and cobblestones, which are tough with strollers and tired legs. Plan one big attraction per day and keep the rest loose.
The details
Oceanário de Lisboa (aquarium). It's the easiest "yes" in the city. It's open every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with last entry at 7 p.m. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Prices depend on your time slot. Ages 3–12 pay €17.70 ≈ $20 for the 10–11:30 slot, €16.60 ≈ $19 for 12–3:30 and €15.50 ≈ $17 for 4–6:30. Adults pay €29.90 ≈ $34, €27.70 ≈ $31 and €25.50 ≈ $29 for the same slots. Ages 0–2 are free. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The page lists about 1h30 to 2h as the average visit. Hours are shorter on Dec 24 and 31 and later to open on Dec 25 and Jan 1. Prices and slots can change, so check the Oceanário page before you buy.
Lisbon Zoo (Jardim Zoológico). It is open every day of the year. Prices valid from January 1, 2026: free under 3, €19 ≈ $21 for ages 3–12 and €31 ≈ $35 for ages 13–64. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The ticket covers all presentations and attractions except the Zoo Train, which costs €1 ≈ $1.13 for adults and €0.50 ≈ $0.56 for children and seniors. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The zoo says children under 13 can only enter if accompanied by an adult over 18. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Opening hours change by season, so check zoo.pt for today's times.
Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Ciência Viva (science museum). It sits in Parque das Nações, close to the Oceanário. It is a hands-on science center that suits roughly ages 3 to 12, and it is a good rainy-day option. We have no current ticket price or hours to share. Check pavconhecimento.pt before you go.
Getting around with children. On the metro, children under 4 travel free. Ages 4–12 travel free if they hold a navegante card with the Child profile. (checked Oct 12, 2026) That card is aimed at residents, so most visiting 4–12-year-olds will probably need a ticket. For Carris buses and trams, everyone aged 4 and over needs a valid ticket. Kids up to 3 ride free with an adult. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Confirm child fares for your dates with Carris or Metro de Lisboa. Metro stations also have wide gates for people with strollers or children under 4. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
What's harder. Lisbon is hilly, and many old streets in Alfama and Bairro Alto are steep cobblestone. Trams on popular routes are typically crowded at midday. Summers are typically hot, so use shade and midday breaks. Kids under about 3 won't get much out of the big attractions, though babies and toddlers still enter the Oceanário and zoo free.
Tips
- Book the Oceanário's 10 a.m. or late-afternoon slot. The late slot is the cheapest, and the morning slot usually means smaller crowds.
- Pair the Oceanário with the science museum in Parque das Nações. They're close together, and it's a flat area that works well for strollers.
- Take the zoo in the morning, before the heat. Leave the old-town hills for another day.
- Bring a light stroller or carrier. Carriers handle stairs and cobblestones better.
- Check each attraction's official page the week you travel for hours and any closures.
FAQ
What age is best for Lisbon with kids?
Roughly 3 to 12 gets the most out of it. The Oceanário, zoo and science museum all target that range. Babies and toddlers can still come, and under-3s are free at the Oceanário and zoo, but narrow streets and hills are the main challenge with strollers. Teens will like the old-town exploring more.
Is Lisbon stroller-friendly?
Partly. Parque das Nações is flat and easy. The historic districts have steep hills, cobblestones and stairs. Metro stations have wide gates for strollers, per Metro de Lisboa. A compact stroller or a baby carrier makes the older neighborhoods much easier to handle.
Do kids ride public transport free in Lisbon?
Under 4s ride free on Metro and Carris with an adult. Kids 4–12 are free on Metro only with a navegante card with the Child profile, and Carris says all riders 4 and up need a valid ticket. Visitors should plan to pay for kids 4 and up unless the operator confirms otherwise.
