Is Waikiki good for kids on a first family trip?

Short answer: Yes, for most families. Waikiki is a good first-trip base because it has protected swimming, lifeguards, a zoo, an aquarium and plenty of food within a short walk or ride. The trade-off is that it's a busy urban resort district, not a quiet beach town.

The details

  • A calm place to swim. Kūhiō Beach is the one to know. The state tourism site says two concrete walls divide the beach and create a calm swimming enclosure that is ideal for children and families . The same page lists lifeguards, showers and food concessions among the amenities. The walls themselves are for walking, not for swimming or climbing on.
  • Lifeguards are not a babysitter. Honolulu's lifeguards are a big plus. Still, the state's ocean safety guidance is to check with a lifeguard about current conditions and potential hazards before you go in the ocean . Conditions change, so ask each day. Keep young kids within arm's reach even inside the walls.
  • Honolulu Zoo. The zoo is open daily 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and the grounds close at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $21.00 for ages 13+, $13.00 for ages 3–12, and free for ages 0–2 . Hours and prices can change, so check the ticket page before you go.
  • Waikīkī Aquarium. It lists hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, with the facility closing at 5:00 p.m. General admission is $12, with discounted rates available. The site also notes the aquarium is open while undergoing renovations, so some exhibits may be affected . Check the site for child pricing and any closures.
  • Who may be disappointed. Waikiki is crowded, and sunny afternoons on the sand are busy. Teens who want surf lessons or adventure will probably have more fun on day trips. Families who want quiet, uncrowded beaches may prefer to stay elsewhere on Oahu.

Tips

  • Go to the beach early. Mornings are usually calmer and less crowded. Save the zoo or aquarium for the hottest part of the day.
  • Plan around the zoo's early closing. Its ticket window ends at 3:00 p.m. . Don't plan it for a late afternoon.
  • Bring sun protection. Shade on the sand is typically limited, so pack hats, rash guards and reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Talk to a lifeguard first. Make it part of every beach visit, not just the first one.
  • Use the Diamond Head end for the quieter attractions. The zoo and aquarium are in Kapiʻolani Park, so you can see both without a long trip.

FAQ

Is Waikiki beach safe for toddlers and young kids?

Kūhiō Beach's walled enclosure is the best bet in Waikiki, and it has lifeguards . "Safer" is not the same as "safe," though. Stay within arm's reach and ask the lifeguard about that day's conditions.

What ages is Waikiki best for?

It suits nearly all ages for a first trip. Little kids get calm water and short outings, and school-age kids enjoy the zoo and aquarium. Teens may want a few more active outings off Waikiki, such as surf lessons.

Do I need a car in Waikiki with kids?

Not necessarily. The beach, zoo and aquarium are all in or next to Waikiki. The zoo's ticket page covers its own entrance details, so check there before you arrive. Rent a car only for the days you leave Waikiki.

Is the Waikiki Aquarium worth it for kids?

It's a manageable stop for most families, and it's open daily . Renovations are underway, so check the site first for any closed exhibits and for child ticket prices.

Is the Honolulu Zoo good for little kids?

Yes, for most families. The zoo is easy to reach from Waikiki, and children 2 and under are free . Go early, because the ticket window closes at 3:00 p.m.
