Is Lanikai Beach and the Pillbox hike worth a trip to Kailua?

Short answer: Yes, if you can go early on a weekday and are willing to walk a bit. The Pillbox hike is short, and the payoff is a view over Lanikai and the Mokulua islands. The beach is lovely, but parking and neighborhood rules are the hard part. Skip it if you want an easy, no-planning beach day or you're short on time.

The details

  • The hike is short but steep. The Pillbox hike (officially the Kaiwa Ridge Trail) typically takes well under an hour to reach the two WWII pillboxes. Expect a steep start, loose dirt and gravel, little shade, and no restrooms or water at the top. Footing gets slippery when wet. For current trail status or any access changes, check the state's Na Ala Hele trails page.
  • The trailhead is in a residential neighborhood. There's no trailhead lot, so you park on neighborhood streets or walk in from elsewhere. Residents care a lot about blocked driveways and early-morning noise.
  • Lanikai has no beach parking lot. Honolulu has moved to ban parking along Lanikai's one-way loop and to prohibit it on side streets between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., with more bus service and bike access planned. That was the city's plan as reported in July 2025. Signs on the ground rule, so read every one.
  • Holiday weekends are stricter. For New Year's weekend 2026, the city restricted Lanikai parking from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on January 1–4 to reduce congestion. Expect similar rules on other long weekends. Check the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) news page before you go.
  • TheBus can help. TheBus runs Route 671, Kailua–Lanikai. The timetable we found was marked effective 3/3/24, so check thebus.org for the current schedule and fares. From Waikiki, the bus trip typically means at least one transfer and well over an hour each way.

Who should go

  • Go if you have a rental car or rideshare, can be on the trail near sunrise, and like a short effort for a big view.
  • Skip or shorten if you're only on Oahu for a day or two and hoping for easy parking. Kailua town itself is pleasant, and the Pillbox view alone doesn't justify a long detour if you have a packed itinerary.
  • Think twice with small kids or anyone unsteady on loose dirt. The ridge has drop-offs.

Tips

  • Go on a weekday. Weekends, holidays, and summer are the most crowded and the most heavily enforced.
  • Park in Kailua (the Kailua Beach Park lots are the usual fallback) and walk or bike the rest. Check the DTS page and the posted signs first.
  • Do the hike first, around sunrise, then swim. Heat and crowds build by mid-morning.
  • Bring water, sun protection, and shoes with grip. Skip flip-flops.
  • Keep your voice down on the neighborhood streets and never block a driveway. Pack out your trash.

FAQ

Is the Pillbox hike hard?

It's short, but the start is steep with loose footing, and the exposed ridge has drop-offs. Most reasonably fit visitors manage it with decent shoes and water. Take your time going down, and skip it right after rain. For trail notices, check the Na Ala Hele trails page.

Can I park at Lanikai Beach?

Not reliably. There's no beach lot, and the city has been restricting street parking. Park in Kailua and walk, bike, or ride the bus when you can. Check Honolulu DTS for current rules and obey the signs.

Do I need a car?

A car makes it far easier, but it's not strictly required. TheBus Route 671 links Kailua and Lanikai, though reaching Kailua from Waikiki usually takes a transfer and a long ride. Rideshare is the other option. Check thebus.org for schedules.
