Is it worth visiting Óbidos and Nazaré from Lisbon in one day?

Short answer: Yes, if you have a car or book a guided tour. The two towns sit close together, so a morning in Óbidos and an afternoon in Nazaré is a good day. Without a car, skip the combo. The Óbidos–Nazaré bus link is thin, and you'd spend much of the day waiting.

The details

  • Óbidos is a short stop. Allow roughly 2–3 hours for the walls, Rua Direita and a ginjinha. The castle is now an inn with a restaurant. The interior is only open to guests, not tourists. The town's official guide lists free museums, churches, the sour cherry liqueur, narrow streets, the castle and its walls as the main things to do.
  • Nazaré's big-wave sight is the Sítio clifftop. The best place to watch is the Sítio da Nazaré, next to the lighthouse and Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo. The fort's interior is open all year from 10AM to 6PM, at €2 ≈ $2.25, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Hours and fees vary, so check with the Nazaré municipality or the fort before you go.
  • Season matters. Big-wave season runs October to March, and September and April work in some years. That means it has just started. Giant waves are never guaranteed on a given day. Check a swell forecast or webcam the day before.
  • Competition days change access. The next Nazaré Big Wave Challenge is expected between 1 November 2026 and 31 March 2027. The lighthouse is usually open except on big wave competition days.
  • Getting there without a car. Rodoviária do Oeste runs the "Rápida Verde" bus from Lisbon's Campo Grande terminal to Óbidos. It typically takes about an hour. Direct Óbidos–Nazaré buses are few, and many run on weekdays only. The alternative is changing in Caldas da Rainha, which adds time. Check the timetable at rodoviariadooeste.pt before you commit, and work out your return to Lisbon first.
  • By car, the rough timings are about an hour from Lisbon to Óbidos and 30–35 minutes from Óbidos to Nazaré. Allow around 1.5 hours back to Lisbon. Treat these as estimates and check live traffic.

Tips

  • Reach Óbidos early. Day-trip crowds build later in the morning, and the walls are nicer when quiet.
  • Drive Nazaré's far end first if you're after waves. In season, parking near the lighthouse isn't possible on big days, so park farther away and expect a walk of more than 1 km.
  • Stay behind barriers at Praia do Norte. Don't go down to the beach on big-swell days.
  • Go in summer for beach weather instead. Nazaré's big waves are a winter show, and the town is a different day out in July.
  • Short on time? Cut Nazaré's town center and do only the Sítio viewpoint, or drop Nazaré and pair Óbidos with something closer to Lisbon.

FAQ

Is one day enough for both Óbidos and Nazaré?

Yes, if you drive or join a tour. Óbidos needs about half a day at most, and Nazaré's Sítio viewpoint and lighthouse can fill an afternoon. It feels rushed if you add more stops, or if you rely on the bus connection between the two towns.

Can I do Óbidos and Nazaré by public transport?

It's possible but not comfortable. Lisbon to Óbidos is straightforward by bus, but Óbidos to Nazaré has limited direct service, and a change in Caldas da Rainha is the usual fallback. Plan your last bus back to Lisbon first. Check rodoviariadooeste.pt for current times.

Will I see big waves in Nazaré?

Only possibly. Big-wave season is roughly October to March, and the biggest days depend on Atlantic swells. A day trip gives you one chance, so check the forecast and webcams beforehand. If the sea is flat, the clifftop and fort are still worth the view.

Can I go inside Óbidos Castle?

Not as a regular visitor. The castle is run as an inn, so its interior is for guests. You can still enjoy the town, the walls and the views from around the grounds. Confirm current access on the Óbidos tourism office's site.

Should I choose just one town?

If you're relying on buses, yes. Óbidos alone is an easy half-day from Lisbon. Nazaré alone suits winter wave-watching or a beach day in summer. The two together are best for drivers and tour guests.
