Where can I see wild koalas on the Great Ocean Road?

Short answer: Go to Kennett River and walk or drive slowly along Grey River Road. Then, if you have time, take the road out to the Cape Otway lighthouse. Victoria's state tourism site calls the Great Ocean Road prime koala-spotting territory, along with the route to the lighthouse at Cape Otway.

The details

1. Kennett River (the easy first stop). Tourism Australia suggests making Kennett River an early stop if you're driving from Melbourne. Park at the Koala Kafe and start the Kennett River walk. The village sits roughly halfway between Lorne and Apollo Bay. The "koala walk" is simply Grey River Road, which branches off the Great Ocean Road. Allow roughly 2.5 hours from Melbourne without stops (an estimate). Check live drive times on Google Maps or the VicRoads site.

2. The Cape Otway lighthouse road. The turn-off is past Apollo Bay, and the road runs through forest to the Cape Otway Lightstation. Visit Victoria lists this route as a koala-spotting area (see the link above). Check the Lightstation's own website for hours and entry fees, because we haven't confirmed them. The koalas along the road are free to look at. They live in the Great Otway National Park, which has been the subject of koala translocation and management programs run by Victoria's wildlife agency.

3. Timing matters more than the spot. Koalas spend most of the day asleep high in tall trees. Parks Victoria says the best time to see them is dawn or dusk, when they're most active. Tour buses tend to arrive in the middle of the day, so early morning or late afternoon is also quieter.

4. A guided option. Visit Victoria notes that conservationists at Wildlife Wonders on the Great Ocean Road lead you through bush to spot wild koalas. Check their website for tour times and prices.

5. If you want a guaranteed sighting. Wild koalas are never certain. Visit Victoria points to Healesville Sanctuary and the Koala Conservation Reserve on Phillip Island for a guaranteed sighting. Both are off the Great Ocean Road, so they suit a separate day trip from Melbourne.

Tips

  • Look up and scan slowly. Koalas look like grey lumps in the forks of gum trees. A parked car or a small group staring upward usually means someone has found one.
  • Bring binoculars. They help you find koalas and watch them without crowding them.
  • Don't touch or get close. Parks Victoria asks visitors to respect wild animals, not get too close, and not try to touch them.
  • Drive slowly on Grey River Road and the lighthouse road. Koalas and other wildlife can be on or near the road, especially around dawn and dusk. Pull over fully before you stop to look.
  • Stay flexible. If you can sleep in Lorne, Apollo Bay or nearby, you can try both an evening and a morning, which improves your odds.

FAQ

Is Kennett River the best place to see koalas on the Great Ocean Road?

It's the most popular and easiest to reach, and Tourism Australia names it as an early stop on the drive from Melbourne. Cape Otway's lighthouse road is the other well-known spot. Neither is a guarantee, because wild koalas are often asleep high in the canopy.

What time of day is best?

Dawn or dusk. Parks Victoria says these are the times when koalas are most active. Midday koalas are usually curled up and still. Expect to look for a while, and be patient.

Do I need a car?

A car makes it much easier, since both spots are on a coastal road with limited public transport. If you don't drive, a Great Ocean Road day tour from Melbourne is the usual alternative. Check the itinerary to confirm it stops at Kennett River and how long it stays there.

Are there entry fees to see the koalas?

We haven't confirmed any fee for roadside viewing at Kennett River, and we found no official page listing one. The Cape Otway Lightstation is a separate attraction that may charge entry. Check the Lightstation's own website and the Parks Victoria page for the Great Otway National Park.

Can I feed or pat the koalas?

No. Parks Victoria's guidance is to give wildlife space and not try to touch it. Feeding wild animals can harm them. Take photos from a distance instead.
