Is the Great Ocean Road worth it compared to a Twelve Apostles helicopter ride?

Short answer: Do the road if you have a day or more and want beaches, forest and small towns as well as the stacks. Take a helicopter if the stacks are the main goal and you'll pay for the view. The best-value mix is usually to drive or take a coach tour, then add a 15-minute flight at the Apostles.

The details

The drive is long, and that's the point. The 12 Apostles are 275 kilometres west of Melbourne, roughly a four-hour drive along the Great Ocean Road. The regional tourism body advises against a rushed eight-hour round trip, not including breaks and sightseeing stops. It suggests staying overnight instead. The road also takes in the Surf Coast, Apollo Bay and the Otways. If you only have a single day, a guided coach tour saves you the driving.

A local helicopter flight is short. The 12 Apostles Helicopters flight to London Bridge lasts 15 minutes (a 45 km round tour). The operator's own site also lists a longer 25-minute, 90 km flight to the Bay of Islands. We couldn't confirm current prices for these flights, so check the operator's site. One booking-site listing for the 15-minute flight showed a minimum of 3 people per booking, but it wasn't bookable when we looked. Ask the operator directly.

Flying from Melbourne is a different, pricier product. Helicraft's day trip from Moorabbin Airport runs 4.5 hours and is listed from $2250 per person. Rotor One lists a 12 Apostles helicopter ride from $2,490 per person. It describes a 5–7 hour experience with a 1 hour private flight. Confirm the currency, group size and what's included on each page before you commit.

The ground visit changed on 16 October 2026. The Victorian Government says the new Keerray Woorroong Visitor Centre opens on 16 October and visitors need a booking. Bookings are made via twelveapostles.org.au and are currently free, but a fee starts from April 2027. The same report says visitors without a booking can make one at the gate, though entry may not be immediate if parking is full. The official site lists the Visitor Centre as open 8:00 AM–8:00 PM with last arrival at 7pm. The car park runs 6:00 AM–9:00 PM. Plan on up to 1–2 hours to explore at a relaxed pace.

What the road gives you that a helicopter can't. You can walk down to the beach at Gibson Steps, where two offshore stacks, Gog and Magog, sit about 1 km south of the Apostles. You also get the towns, the forest and the freedom to stop. A flight shows you the scale of the coastline and several landmarks in minutes, but not the experience of being there.

Tips

  • Choose by time, not by hype. With one day and no car, take a coach tour. With two or more days, drive and stay near the Apostles or Port Campbell.
  • Book the Apostles slot first. Reserve your time on the official site, then build the rest of the day around it. Walk-up entry may be slow if the car park is full.
  • Ask your helicopter operator about the new booking rule. Ask whether the ground booking applies to flight passengers. We couldn't confirm this.
  • Check the tour stop length. Local press says the new visitor-centre layout may mean longer stops (3–4 hours), so check your tour's stop time against the centre's 1–2 hour suggestion.
  • Watch the weather for flights. Flights depend on conditions, so book a flexible slot or ask about the rebooking policy.

FAQ

Is the helicopter better than the viewing platforms?

It's a different view, not a strictly better one. From the air you see the stacks, Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge in one sweep. On foot you get the cliff-top boardwalks and beach access at Gibson Steps. If you can afford it, doing both gives the fullest picture.

Can I do the Twelve Apostles as a day trip from Melbourne?

Yes, but it's a long day. Official tourism material puts the one-way drive at about four hours. It calls the same-day return a rushed eight-hour round trip, before stops. A guided tour removes the driving, and staying a night gives you more time on the coast.

Do I have to pay to visit the Twelve Apostles?

Not yet. Bookings are required from 16 October 2026 but are free for now, and the Victorian Government says a fee starts from April 2027. The amount hadn't been confirmed in the sources we found. Check twelveapostles.org.au for the current position before you go.
