Where can I watch football in Lisbon?

Short answer: Lisbon has three stadiums that regularly host football. Benfica (Estádio da Luz) and Sporting (Estádio José Alvalade) are the big two. Belenenses (Estádio do Restelo) is the cheaper, lower-key option. Book the big two through the clubs' official sites. If no match fits your dates, the Benfica stadium and museum visit is the fallback.

The details

Benfica, Estádio da Luz. Benfica's home ground is the stadium that also holds the club museum. The Museu Benfica – Cosme Damião is open daily 10:00–19:00, except men's first-team match days and December 25 and January 1. Off-season hours are shorter. From September 16 to June 14 the club lists 10:00–18:00 for both stadium and museum. The same page recommends allowing at least 1.5 hours for the museum. Buy match tickets on slbenfica.pt.

Sporting, Estádio José Alvalade. The club says you can buy tickets for any match, either online (delivered by email) or at the stadium. The same page offers reduced-price tickets for members. The stadium's public-transit entry lists Campo Grande station.

The Lisbon derby. Ticket listings show Benfica v Sporting at the Estádio da Luz on Sunday, December 27, 2026 . They also show the return at José Alvalade on May 9, 2027 . Kickoff times differed between listings, and league fixtures are often moved for TV. Wait for the club announcement before you book flights around a derby.

Belenenses, Estádio do Restelo. Belenenses play in Liga 3, the third tier. The ground sits in Belém, a short hop from the Jerónimos area. One fixture database lists home games on October 25 and November 8 at 15:00 . For tickets, use the club's own news page at osbelenenses.com. A home match there pairs easily with a day in Belém.

Europe nights. Listings show Benfica hosting Celtic in the Europa League on October 15 . Sporting's Champions League home games are listed too. Those tickets go fast and cost more than league games.

Tips

  • Pick the club by your dates. Check both clubs' fixture lists before you lock in flights. Benfica and Sporting often play on alternating weekends, so one of them may be at home when the other is away.
  • Buy from the club first. Official sites show face-value tickets. Resale sites list the derby at several times the price of an ordinary league game, so compare before paying.
  • Allow for kickoff changes. Liga Portugal fixtures often shift for TV. Book refundable hotel rooms until times are confirmed.
  • Use the metro. Match days are crowded around both stadiums. Pre-load a Viva Viagem card and plan your return before the final whistle.
  • No match? Do the museum. Remember it closes on Benfica match days, so check the stadium availability calendar first.
  • Sports bars. Many bars show big games on screens. Ask your hotel for a neighborhood spot near where you're staying.

FAQ

Can I get tickets on the day of the match?

Sometimes, for lower-profile league games. Sporting says tickets can be bought at the stadium as well as online. Derbies, Champions League nights and visits by Porto usually sell out well ahead, so buy early for those.

Is it worth seeing Belenenses?

Yes, if you want a relaxed, local atmosphere, a river-adjacent neighborhood and no crowds. The football is third tier, so expect a lower standard than Benfica or Sporting. It suits a flexible, budget-friendly afternoon.

Which stadium is easier to reach?

Both are on the metro. Sporting's Estádio José Alvalade is by Campo Grande station. Estádio da Luz also has its own metro stop. Check the Metro de Lisboa site for service changes on match days.

Can I tour a stadium if no match fits?

Yes. Benfica offers a stadium and museum visit with tickets on slbenfica.pt. Stadium access is limited on match days, and the museum closes on them. Check the availability calendar before booking.

Do I need to buy through the club's app or membership?

Not for most league games. Sporting says general sale runs online or at the stadium. Big fixtures can have member priority, so check the club's ticket page for sale phases.
