Things change. Facts in this guide were checked on October 9, 2026. Confirm hours, fees, road and trail status, and schedules on the official page (and the agency's or venue's official Facebook, X or Instagram for same-day closures) before you book or drive. Where we could not confirm something, we give a labelled estimate and say where to check.

Austin in four days: capital, creek, and Hill Country.

  • Trip length: 3–4 days (a fourth day adds East Austin and the Domain).
  • Best months: Typically March–May and October–November; check the forecast, since summer is hot.
  • Budget band: Built from verified fees plus your own blanks. Fixed fees for the core list are about $25–$35 per person (Barton Springs non-resident adult $9, LBJ Library adult $16, Hamilton Pool $8 per adult 13–61 plus a $12 per-car reservation), before food, rides and lodging.
  • Best for: First-timers, couples, music lovers, and anyone who wants a big city with a swimming hole.

At a glance

  • Airport: Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS). Route 20 serves it every 15–30 minutes, about 35 minutes to downtown, at $1.25 per ride. (checked Oct 9, 2026)
  • Getting around: Downtown, South Congress and Zilker are connected by buses and the trail, but a short rideshare saves time at the edges. A car helps only for Hill Country.
  • Base: Downtown for first visits, South Congress for atmosphere.
  • Must-book: Hamilton Pool reservations (required every day), hotels around events, any Capitol group tour (groups over 10 call 512-305-8402). (checked Oct 9, 2026)
  • Free: Capitol tours, the lake trail, bats in season.
  • Two closures to remember: Barton Springs on Thursday daytime; LBJ Library on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
  • The thing most visitors get wrong: Cramming Hill Country into a city day. Give it a full day.

When to go, and what changes the plan

Austin works in every month, but the experience shifts. In spring and fall the outdoor stops (the lake trail, Zilker, Hamilton Pool) are at their most comfortable. In summer the heat pushes you to a dawn-and-dusk rhythm: the pool in the morning, indoor stops at midday, the river at sunset. We give no temperature figures here because they vary year to year; check a forecast for your dates.

Events shape the calendar more than weather does. SXSW 2027 is listed for March 15 to 21, 2027, so the weeks around it are the busiest and priciest for lodging. (checked Oct 9, 2026) Austin City Limits Music Festival is listed at Zilker Park on October 2 to 4 and 9 to 11, 2026, and that means Zilker and its parking are not a normal park during festival weekends. (checked Oct 9, 2026) We did not find 2027 festival dates, so check the festival site before you plan an October visit. (We could not confirm this on the official site when we checked — confirm it there before you book.) The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix is listed for October 22 to 25, 2026, at Circuit of The Americas, and Visit Austin also lists the Austin Film Festival (October 29 to November 5), the Austin Food & Wine Festival (November 6 to 8) and the Texas Book Festival at the Capitol (November 14 to 15). (checked Oct 9, 2026) Event dates are set by organizers and can move; check Visit Austin's events page for your year.

The University of Texas also matters: on home football Saturdays, the LBJ Library says to expect heavy traffic and inconvenient rideshare drop-offs, so visit that stop on another day. (checked Oct 9, 2026)

How the four days fit together

The plan runs in a sensible order. Day 1 stays within a mile or two of the Capitol, which lets you recover from travel on foot. Day 2 moves west and south to the water. Day 3 is the long day, and it is the one that depends on a reservation, so it comes after you have confirmed the weather. Day 4 is deliberately loose. If a storm closes the pool on Day 2 or the preserve on Day 3, you swap days rather than lose them.

Three-day travelers should drop Day 4. Two-day travelers should combine Day 1 (stops 1 and 3) with Day 2 (stops 1, 3 and 4) and skip the Hill Country.
