Alsace Christmas Markets: Strasbourg, Colmar and Basel without overpaying (2026 guide)
Travel scene

At a glance

  • Trip shape: 5 nights, 6 days. Strasbourg 3 nights, Colmar 2 nights, with a Basel day trip and Wine Route villages as add-ons.
  • Strasbourg's market opens Friday 27 November 2026 . The closing date for 2026 was not published on the page we opened; in recent years Strasbourg's market has typically run to 24 December, so plan on that and confirm the 2026 closing date on noel.strasbourg.eu.
  • Colmar's six markets run 23 November to 29 December 2026 .
  • Basel's main market runs 26 November to 23 December 2026, 11:00 to 20:30 .
  • Getting around: a Strasbourg single tram/bus ticket starts at €1.90 ≈ $2.12 and lasts one hour . Strasbourg and Colmar are connected by regional TER trains; check the fare on ter.sncf.com/grand-est.
  • Best timing: weekday mornings, before the tour groups arrive. Weekend evenings are the crowded peak.
  • Entry: France is a Schengen country; Level 2 "Exercise increased caution" from the State Department .
  • The thing visitors get wrong: assuming every market closes on 24 December. Colmar's runs to 29 December, Basel's main market ends 23 December, and several Wine Route markets are weekends-only or end around 20 December.

When to go

Late November to mid-December gives you the full set of stalls and the longest evenings of lights. The first week after opening (27 November onward) is calmer on weekdays; the two weekends before 24 December are the busiest. If you want the villages, note that Kaysersberg is open only on weekends (27-29 Nov, 4-6 Dec, 11-13 Dec, 18-20 Dec) and Riquewihr runs 27 Nov to 20 Dec . A trip that starts the first week of December hits everything. Expect cold, damp weather; Alsace is dry by European standards but December still brings fog and drizzle.

Where to stay by area

  • Strasbourg Grande Ile (the island): walkable to the Cathedral, Place Kléber and Petite France. Most atmospheric, priciest, and noisy on weekends.
  • Strasbourg near the station (Gare): easiest for TGV and TER arrivals and tram connections. Less charming, cheaper and quick to the markets by foot or tram.
  • Colmar old town: everything within 15 minutes on foot, including Little Venice. Book early; the town is small.
  • Colmar near the station: a short walk to the old town, with easier train access for the Basel day trip.

Whether Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton or IHG have hotels in Strasbourg or Colmar is something we could not confirm from the chains' own sites this run; check each chain's map.

Entry rules

France and Switzerland both require a valid passport for US citizens. Typical Schengen guidance is a passport valid at least three months past your departure date from the Schengen area and issued within the last ten years; confirm on travel.state.gov for France and for Switzerland. ETIAS and the EU Entry/Exit System have been rolling out in stages; the official page (travel-europe.europa.eu) did not open from our system, so check it for the current status before you fly. Switzerland is not in the EU but is in Schengen, so the same passport rule applies for the Basel day trip. Switzerland's State Department advisory is Level 1, "Exercise normal precautions" .

Three free things

  1. Cathedral square at dusk, Strasbourg. The Notre-Dame cathedral facade lit up over the Place de la Cathédrale; the square itself is free to enter and the facade is the show. Climbing the tower and interior fees are separate; confirm on the cathedral's official page.
  2. Place Kléber's great tree. The big tree is the centrepiece of the Strasbourg market and is free to see day or night; it is typically lit through the season. Confirm exact lighting dates on noel.strasbourg.eu.
  3. Little Venice, Colmar, in the evening. Walking the canals past the half-timbered houses costs nothing; go on a weekday evening when the lamps are on and the crowds thin out.

Budget habits that matter here

Three habits save the most money on this trip. First, travel on weekday mornings: lodging is not cheaper, but you avoid queues for food and the paid attractions. Second, eat the savoury street food as a meal (tarte flambée, sausages, bretzels) rather than sitting for a full restaurant dinner every night, and save one proper sit-down meal for the end of the trip. Third, share one reusable market mug when the stall allows it, and return it for the deposit before you leave town; the deposit amount was not published on the pages we opened, so ask at the first stand. The full guide gives the day plan, fares, rules, the points chapter and a printable page for each day. It also covers Strasbourg's security perimeter, which is published officially and can change, so read the Update notes at the end before you travel.

This is the free lite guide. The full day-by-day guide, with maps, photo stops, rain plans and the points playbook, is part of PerkJolt All-Access.

Good to know before you go

Christmas market dates, hours, security rules and fares are set year by year and can shift after we publish. Everything below with a stamp was read on an official page on 2026-10-12; anything without one carries a "typically" and the page to confirm on. Check the dates of the market you are building a trip around before you book anything non-refundable.
