American Airlines launches cash and miles bookings

American Airlines says it is launching cash and miles bookings, letting eligible AAdvantage members pay for a flight with a mix of money and miles. According to the airline's official release dated Oct 2, 2026, the feature will roll out "in the coming weeks" on aa.com and in the American app. No exact start date is given (as of Oct 12, 2026; confirm on news.aa.com).

How the booking flow works. Per the release:

  • Log in to your AAdvantage account and choose flights to pay for with cash.
  • At checkout you are offered optional trip insurance.
  • After you accept or decline, the cash and miles options appear.
  • Use a slider to pick the combination of cash and miles you want.
  • The cost summary updates to match your choice.
  • Enter payment details and complete the booking.

What the release does not say. It gives no minimum or maximum number of miles, no list of eligible fares or routes, and no limits on how much of a fare miles can cover. It also does not define which members are "eligible." Until American publishes those details, treat the feature as announced, not yet usable.

How to judge it. Once you can see real prices, compare two numbers. First, work out the cents per mile you would be getting: the cash you save by using miles, divided by the miles you put in. Second, compare that with simply paying cash for the whole fare and keeping your miles. If the slider gives you less per mile than your other uses for AAdvantage miles, such as an award ticket you would otherwise book, paying cash is the better choice. PerkJolt has not seen the pricing, so we are not putting a value on it.

Topping up with transfers. Citi ThankYou points transfer to AAdvantage at 1:1 from select cards only, per PerkJolt's verified chart, checked Oct 8, 2026. See our Citi ThankYou guide for which cards qualify. Whether transferred miles can be used in the slider is not addressed in the release.

Other AAdvantage changes in the same release.

  • Members who reach 15,000 Loyalty Points in the membership year can choose two inflight food and beverage coupons, usable on eligible flights where service is offered.
  • At 15,000 Loyalty Points, members can also choose a 12-month New York Times subscription to Games, Cooking or The Athletic.
  • At 175,000, 250,000, 400,000, 550,000 or 750,000 Loyalty Points, members can get a 12-month New York Times All Access subscription, which covers News, Games, Cooking, Wirecutter and The Athletic.
  • Million Miler members are promised an expanded selection of gifts at each milestone, "coming soon," on top of existing rewards.

Loyalty Point thresholds apply to the membership year as stated in the release (as of Oct 12, 2026; confirm on news.aa.com). Start dates for the perks are not given in the text we reviewed.

Bottom line: cash and miles is a flexibility feature, and its value depends on pricing American has not yet shown. Confirm the details on the official release and on aa.com once it appears in your account.
