How do I get from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and the Bridge on the River Kwai?
Short answer: The train is the classic way. It leaves Thonburi station twice a day, is third class only, and stops at both Kanchanaburi and River Kwai Bridge stations. Buses and minivans from the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) run much more often. They suit you if the train times don't fit your day.
The details
By train (Thonburi station). Two trains run daily: No. 257 at 7:45 a.m. and No. 259 at 1:55 p.m. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The departure station is Thonburi, not Hua Lamphong. The fare for foreigners is 100 baht, however far you ride. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
Buying a ticket. The daily trains can't be bought online or in advance. Arrive about 30 minutes early and buy at the ticket office. (checked Oct 12, 2026) These are third-class carriages with fans and open windows. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
Train arrival times. One timetable lists the morning train reaching Kanchanaburi at 10:20 and River Kwai Bridge at 10:42, and the afternoon one Kanchanaburi at 16:19 and River Kwai Bridge at 16:33. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Other published timetables differ by a few minutes, so treat these as roughly right.
Getting back by train. The published return times for the afternoon train vary by source, from about 2:35 to 2:50 p.m. from Kanchanaburi. One timetable shows it reaching Thon Buri at 17:40. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Confirm the exact time at the station or on the State Railway of Thailand site (railway.co.th).
By bus or van. Regular buses from the Southern Bus Terminal to Kanchanaburi depart every 20 minutes from 04:00 to 20:00. The trip takes about 3 hours. Vans leave hourly from 05:00 to 21:00. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Another listing shows a first-class air-con bus at 99 baht and a passenger van at 150 baht. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Fares typically sit in the low hundreds of baht or less, so check at the counter.
From north Bangkok. Some private companies run vans from the Northern terminal, Mo Chit, and that trip takes about three hours. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
Reaching the bridge from the bus. Most buses and minivans arrive at Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal, about 5.1 km from the River Kwai Bridge. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Plan on a songthaew, tuk-tuk or Grab for the last leg.
At the bridge. The Tourism Authority of Thailand notes that visitors can walk across its sturdy tracks. (checked Oct 12, 2026) It's still an active railway, so step aside when a train comes.
Tips
- Pick the 7:45 train for a day trip. Thai Train Guide advises the earlier train if you're returning the same day. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- Skip the trip to Thonburi if you're near the MRT. One guide says you can get off at Bang Khun Non and board at the Charan Sanit Wong stop at about 7:47 a.m. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Arrive early and watch the platform.
- Weekends are different. A special excursion train, No. 909, runs only at weekends. (checked Oct 12, 2026) It leaves from Bangkok's main station, and public holidays are also covered. Check railway.co.th for times and booking.
- Book vans ahead on weekends and Thai holidays. Locals head to Kanchanaburi then, and vans can fill up.
- Pack water and snacks. The train is fan-cooled, so go light and bring a hat.
FAQ
Can I do Kanchanaburi as a day trip from Bangkok?
Yes, but it's tight. Take the 7:45 a.m. train, spend a few hours at the bridge and town, and come back on the afternoon train or a van. Using the train both ways leaves roughly four hours on the ground. Overnighting gives you more time.
Is the train or the bus faster?
Neither is much faster. Buses take about 3 hours, according to the Southern Bus Terminal listing above. Timetables show the train taking roughly 2.5 hours. The train is a better experience, while buses leave far more often.
Do I need to book the Bangkok–Kanchanaburi train in advance?
Not for the two daily trains. Thai Train Guide says tickets can't be bought online or in advance, and you buy at the Thonburi ticket office. The weekend excursion train is a separate service, so check railway.co.th for how to book it.
Where does the bus drop me, and how do I reach the bridge?
Most services stop at Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal, about 5 km from the bridge by one guide's measure. Take a songthaew, tuk-tuk or Grab. The train is simpler for the bridge, since River Kwai Bridge station sits right at the site.
Which Bangkok station do I use for the train?
Thonburi station, on the west side of the river. The daily Nam Tok trains start there. If you arrive by boat, Thai Train Guide says to use the Thonburi Station Pier in front of Siriraj Hospital.
