What are the best Melbourne hotels for using Marriott, Hilton or Hyatt points?
Short answer: Marriott has the widest spread in Melbourne, from the Ritz-Carlton and W to the Docklands Marriott. Hyatt has the strongest luxury pair in Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt. Hilton lists four central hotels. For most people, a CBD base works best, with a rental car for the Great Ocean Road.
Who it's for (and who should skip it)
This page is for you if you have Bonvoy, Hilton Honors or World of Hyatt points and want a Melbourne stay that uses them well. It also covers pairing the city with a Great Ocean Road drive.
- Choose Marriott if you want choice. Neighborhoods, brands and pool or lounge setups vary a lot.
- Choose Hyatt if you want a true luxury redemption and don't mind fewer properties. Park Hyatt is the standout.
- Choose Hilton if you hold Hilton points already and want a central, practical base. Expect a more mid-range feel.
- Skip points on peak weeks if cash rates and award prices both spike. Big events do that, and we cover the check below.
One honest limit up front. Marriott and Hilton set award prices dynamically by date, so no fixed chart shows what a night will cost. We won't quote points prices for them. Hyatt publishes a chart, but we could not confirm which category each Melbourne hotel sits in. Check the live price on each brand's site for your dates.
Marriott Bonvoy: the most options
Marriott's own Melbourne page lists several hotels. Here are the ones to weigh, in rough order of how often they suit points travelers.
The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne. It sits high above the CBD skyline and has one of Australia's highest infinity pools. (checked Oct 12, 2026) It is the splurge pick if award nights price sensibly for your dates.
Melbourne Marriott Hotel. It is at the corner of Exhibition and Lonsdale Streets, in the CBD. (checked Oct 12, 2026) It has an indoor pool, and the M Club Executive Lounge is open to Platinum Elite members and above, and to guests booked into an M Club room. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The hotel page says it does not run a shuttle.
Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands. Marriott's page lists a rooftop infinity pool deck and an outdoor pool. Club lounge access is complimentary for Platinum, Titanium and Ambassador Elite members. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Docklands is a bit removed from the laneway scene, so it suits families, event-goers and travelers who value a pool.
W Melbourne. It is at 408 Flinders Lane and has four on-site restaurants and an indoor pool. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Flinders Lane puts you in the middle of the café and laneway area.
Le Méridien Melbourne. Marriott describes it as beside Parliament House, a new 5-star hotel in Melbourne CBD. (checked Oct 12, 2026) It is a good fit if you like the Spring Street, theatre and Treasury Gardens side of town.
Sheraton Melbourne Hotel. It is also on Marriott's list, with a spa, concierge and turndown service. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
Airport distance. Marriott's pages put the Melbourne Marriott Hotel 21.7 km from the airport, and W Melbourne approximately 24.0 km away.
Our pick: Melbourne Marriott for a balanced CBD base, W Melbourne for laneway access, and the Ritz-Carlton when an award night is a good deal.
Hyatt: fewer hotels, strong redemptions
Hyatt's Melbourne page lists five or more properties. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Three are worth your points if you want to be in the city.
Park Hyatt Melbourne. It is in the CBD, overlooking St. Patrick's Cathedral and Fitzroy Gardens, a two-minute walk from the gardens. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Hyatt describes it as having 245 guestrooms and suites, and the entry-level rooms are 48 square meters (517 square feet). (checked Oct 12, 2026) Big standard rooms are the reason to spend points here rather than cash. The quiet East Melbourne end of the CBD is a plus if you want calm. It is less ideal if you want to be right at Flinders Street.
Grand Hyatt Melbourne. It is on Collins Street, surrounded by high fashion and fine dining. It has 550 guest rooms, including 84 club rooms, plus a Grand Club. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The address is 123 Collins Street. It is a big, central hotel with a lot of room inventory, which can help with award availability.
Hyatt Centric Melbourne. It is at the corner of Downie Street and Flinders Lane. Hyatt's release says it offers convenient access to Southern Cross Station, Docklands, Southbank, the convention centre and Crown. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Hyatt's own fact sheet says the hotel is within the free tram zone. (checked Oct 12, 2026) That sheet dates from the 2021 opening, so confirm the zone on the Public Transport Victoria site. This is the cheaper-in-points option, likely a lower category than the Parks and Grands, though check Hyatt's live pricing.
Others. Hyatt also lists The StandardX, Melbourne, at 62 Rose Street in Fitzroy, a boutique hotel near bars, galleries and parks. (checked Oct 12, 2026) There are two Hyatt Place hotels, both away from the center. Hyatt Place Melbourne Essendon Fields is 10 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from the CBD. (checked Oct 12, 2026) That one is a practical choice for a late arrival or early departure.
How Hyatt prices nights. Hyatt publishes an award table by hotel category. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Each category has five price levels, from "lowest" to "top." On the page's first hotel table, Category 4 runs from 12,000 to 25,000 points per night. Category 6 runs from 20,000 to 40,000, and Category 8 from 35,000 to 75,000. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Which level you pay depends on your dates. Search with the points toggle on and compare days.
Hilton Honors: four central hotels
Hilton's Melbourne page shows four hotels. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The ones named on the page are below.
Hilton Melbourne Little Queen Street. It has 244 rooms, a restaurant, a bar and an executive lounge, and sits on Little Queen and Bourke Streets within walking distance of the shopping area. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The hotel's location page says it is 25 minutes by car from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport and 45 minutes from Avalon Airport. (checked Oct 12, 2026) That Avalon figure matters for Great Ocean Road trips.
Next Hotel Melbourne, Curio Collection. It is at 103 Little Collins Street, in the Collins Street Precinct, with 255 rooms across 24 floors. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The amenity list includes an executive lounge. If you want the best-located Hilton for shopping and theatre, start here.
DoubleTree by Hilton Melbourne – Flinders Street. It sits opposite the historic Flinders Street Station. The Melbourne Cricket Ground and Royal Botanic Gardens are within three miles. (checked Oct 12, 2026) It is the easiest Hilton for trains and trams. Hilton's amenity page says there is no airport shuttle from Tullamarine or Avalon. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
The Motley Hotel Melbourne, Tapestry Collection also appears on Hilton's list. We didn't pull its details.
Pairing a stay with the Great Ocean Road
Don't expect to burn points on the Great Ocean Road itself. Our searches turned up no Marriott, Hilton or Hyatt hotel on the route, so check each brand's map search for the dates you plan. The usual approach is to use points in Melbourne and cash in the coastal towns.
What helps your planning:
- Torquay, the road's official starting point, is just over an hour's drive from Melbourne. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Visit Victoria describes the trip from the CBD as about one and a half hours with dual-lane highway for most of the journey. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Traffic and route choice change this.
- Tourism Australia says Melbourne Airport is 110 km from Torquay and Avalon Airport is 49 km, with hire cars at both airports and in central Melbourne. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- Visit Victoria describes two ways to go: a coastal 'front' way and an inland 'back' way. The inland route saves time to Anglesea, Lorne and Apollo Bay. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- Visit Victoria says the scenic road runs for over 400 kilometres from Torquay to Nelson on the South Australian border. That is longer than the shorter Torquay-to-Allansford figure often quoted, so decide where you will stop before booking. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
Rental pick-up location, road works and conditions vary. Check the Visit Victoria page above and Victoria's road authority before you leave.
Transferring points to these programs
You can top up with transferable points. The ratios on our chart: Chase→Hyatt 4:3 and Chase→Marriott 1:1. Amex→Marriott is 1:1 and Amex→Hilton is 1:2. Bilt goes to Hyatt, Marriott and Hilton at 1:1. See our transfer partners chart for the current list. Hotel transfers are one-way, so move points only when you've found an award night you want.
Tips and tricks
- Price the same dates in all three programs. Marriott and Hilton are dynamic, and Hyatt moves between price levels. A fast side-by-side often shows a clear winner.
- Flex by a day or two. Hyatt's five price levels reward date flexibility, and the others vary by date too.
- Check big-event weeks first. Major sporting and race weeks in Melbourne typically lift both cash and points. Look at your dates against the city's event calendar on Visit Melbourne.
- Know your lounge rules. Marriott's M Club at the Melbourne Marriott is complimentary for Platinum Elite and above. Hyatt's Grand Club and Hilton's executive lounges have their own access rules, so check status requirements on each hotel page.
- Book direct. Marriott's pages say Wi-Fi is free for Bonvoy members who book direct. Hyatt's page says to join World of Hyatt for a member discount. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- Budget for parking if you're renting. Hilton lists self-parking for Next Hotel Melbourne at AU$40.00 per day (checked Oct 12, 2026). The DoubleTree page lists AU$30.00 per day (checked Oct 12, 2026). Rates change. Skip a car for the city days and pick it up on the way out.
- Check the room type, not just the hotel. Hyatt's chart has separate pricing for club rooms and suites, and Park Hyatt's lead-in room is already large.
- Have a cash fallback. If nothing prices well, use a hotel-area search to compare cash rates near the CBD.
Worked example (illustrative)
Say you have five nights: three in Melbourne, then a two-night drive along the coast.
- Nights 1–3, Melbourne. Search all three programs for your dates. If Hyatt has a Park Hyatt award night, Hyatt's chart tells you the range to expect. As a generic example, a hotel in Category 6 would cost between 20,000 and 40,000 points a night, so three nights would run 60,000 to 120,000. We have not confirmed that any Melbourne hotel is in that category, so use this only to see how the chart works. If it doesn't price well, move to Marriott or Hilton.
- Day 4. Pick up a rental car in central Melbourne or at an airport. Tourism Australia lists hire cars at all of those. Plan the first leg to Torquay, which is just over an hour from Melbourne per the same page.
- Nights 4–5, coast. Book cash stays in coastal towns. We found no points-eligible hotels on the route, so budget for cash.
- Final morning. Return the car and head to the airport. If your flight is early, a night at Hyatt Place Essendon Fields near the airport is one option to price against the city hotels.
Prices for Marriott and Hilton nights depend entirely on dates, so there are no point costs to quote here. Pull live prices before you commit.
FAQ
Which Melbourne hotel is the best use of Hyatt points?
Park Hyatt Melbourne is the usual aspiration. Its entry rooms are 48 square meters, which Hyatt says is bigger than many suites elsewhere in the city. Grand Hyatt is the more central, larger-inventory option, and Hyatt Centric is likely the easier award. Check the live points price for your dates, since categories and levels vary.
Does Marriott have a fixed award chart for Melbourne?
We can't give you a fixed number. Marriott and Hilton generally price award nights by date rather than a published chart, so the same hotel can cost very different amounts. Search your exact dates on Marriott.com and compare against Hyatt's published table before you decide.
Which Hilton is best for sightseeing?
Next Hotel Melbourne, Curio Collection, is on Little Collins Street in the Collins Street precinct, and Hilton Melbourne Little Queen Street is near Bourke Street. The DoubleTree is the one right opposite Flinders Street Station, so it is the best for trains and trams. All three are within walking range of the CBD.
Can I use Marriott, Hilton or Hyatt points on the Great Ocean Road?
We didn't find a Marriott, Hilton or Hyatt hotel on the route. Plan to use points in Melbourne and pay cash along the coast. Run a map search in each brand's app for your specific towns, since new properties open and listings change.
How far is the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne's hotels?
Torquay, the official start, is just over an hour from Melbourne per Tourism Australia. Visit Victoria gives about an hour and a half from the CBD. Travel time varies with traffic and route, so leave extra time, especially on weekends. Both pages are linked in Sources.
Should I stay near the airport?
Usually not. Hyatt Place Essendon Fields is the airport-side Hyatt, 10 minutes from the airport per Hyatt. The CBD hotels are 20–25 minutes' drive by the figures hotels publish, and the better restaurants and laneways are in the city. An airport stay only helps with a very early flight.
