When is the best time to visit Lisbon?

Short answer: Aim for April to early June or September to October. Days are usually warm enough for terraces and viewpoints, but not the peak-summer heat and crowds. Summer works if you want beach time and the June festivals. Winter works if you want low prices and can handle some rain.

The details

  • Spring (roughly April to early June): Typically mild to warm, with rain tapering off after winter. Sea swimming is still cold. Jacaranda trees usually bloom in late spring, though timing varies year to year.
  • Summer (roughly mid-June to August): Typically hot, sunny and dry, and the Atlantic breeze helps. IPMA, Portugal's weather service, reported that August 2025 was the 7th driest August since 2000, with only 3.0 mm of rain across mainland Portugal . That is the national figure, not Lisbon alone. Expect the biggest crowds and highest hotel rates from mid-July through August. Heat waves happen, so check the forecast.
  • Fall (September to October): September is usually still summery. October is cooler, and rain becomes more likely. IPMA noted that heavy daily rainfall hit Lisbon and the Algarve on 28–29 October 2025 . A late-October trip can be glorious or soggy, so pack a light rain jacket.
  • Winter (November to February): Mild compared with most of the US and Northern Europe, but wetter. IPMA classed November 2025 as the 3rd wettest in mainland Portugal since 2000, and January 2026 as the second wettest January since 2000 . Those were unusually wet months. Lisbon's cobbled hills get slick in rain, so bring shoes with grip.
  • Event dates: Web Summit, the big tech conference, is in Lisbon November 9–12, 2026 . Hotels are typically tight and pricey that week, so avoid it unless you're attending.
  • June festivals (Santos Populares): Lisbon holds its biggest street parties in June, peaking around the night of June 12 into Saint Anthony's Day on June 13, a local holiday. Dates for 2027 weren't confirmed when we checked. Look up the program on the City of Lisbon's and Visit Lisboa's official event pages before you lock in dates.

Tips

  • Pick your priority first. Weather and crowds point to May or September. Festivals point to June. Price points to winter.
  • Skip the heat-and-crowd combo. If you must come in July or August, do your sightseeing early and save afternoons for the river, a museum or a beach day trip.
  • Book early for June. If you want to be in town for Saint Anthony's night, reserve lodging well ahead. Expect noise in the old neighborhoods until late.
  • Use points flexibly. Summer award seats and hotel rates tend to cost more, so check dates on either side of peak. See our transfer partners guide for how your points can move.
  • Pack layers year-round. Evenings off the river can feel cooler than the afternoon high suggests.

FAQ

What is the cheapest time to visit Lisbon?

Late fall through winter, outside Christmas and New Year, is typically the cheapest. Prices rise with the summer peak. Watch for Web Summit in early November, which pushes hotel rates up that week. Compare your exact dates on your airline and hotel sites, since prices shift constantly.

Is Lisbon too hot in August?

It can be. Highs are often in the 80s°F, and heat waves can push well past that. The Atlantic breeze helps, but the hills are tiring in the afternoon sun. Many locals leave town in August, and some small businesses may close, so check hours for anywhere you plan to eat.

Does it rain a lot in Lisbon?

Mostly in the cooler months. Summer is typically very dry, while winter can bring heavy spells, as IPMA's recent monthly summaries show. Any month can surprise you, so check IPMA's forecast a few days out instead of relying on averages.

When is the best time for a Lisbon beach day?

Late June through September is the most reliable. Lisbon's own sea is chilly through spring, since it's Atlantic water. Beach towns west of the city make an easy day trip. Check the current train schedule and sea conditions on the day you go.

Should I visit Lisbon in June for the festivals?

Yes, if you like crowds, grilled sardines and music in the streets. Skip it if you want quiet. The peak is around June 12–13. Pick a few nights, book a base early, and check the city's official program for that year's locations.
