What is the cheapest month to fly to Honolulu?

Short answer: Fare sites don't agree on one month. January and February show up most often as the cheapest, and the fall shoulder season is the next-best bet. December and the summer months are usually the most expensive. If you're flexible, compare whole-month fare calendars for your own departure city rather than trusting one headline month.

The details

  • The fare sites split. Expedia names May as the cheapest month to fly to Honolulu. Momondo says January is cheapest on average from the U.S., with November next best. Trip.com's data puts February as cheapest for Los Angeles to Honolulu and December as the most expensive.
  • Older Kayak data points the same way. Kayak's snapshot named January and February as cheapest, and December and June as most expensive. That page is an older snapshot, so treat it as a pattern, not a current price.
  • Cheap flights don't always mean a cheap trip. AAA describes December to mid-April as Honolulu's peak season, with higher rates and prices. So a January or February fare can be low while hotels and rental cars cost more. The same guide calls mid-April to mid-June a less crowded and less expensive shoulder season.
  • Official visitor counts show how busy Oahu is. Oahu had 474,742 visitors in August 2026, down 6.0% from August 2025. February 2026 had 436,756 visitors. Counts alone don't set fares, but the state's monthly tables are useful for spotting quieter months:
  • How early you book matters. Expedia, citing ARC data, says domestic flights booked 28 or more days ahead are typically 24% cheaper than last-minute ones. Kayak says booking at least 5 weeks ahead saves around 14%.

What we'd do: Today is October 12, so the January to February 2027 window is still a few months out, which is a good lead time. Check fares for those months and for the fall 2027 shoulder season, and book whichever is lower from your airport.

Tips

  • Avoid school breaks and major holidays. Expedia advises avoiding school breaks and major holidays to save money.
  • Leave midweek. Expedia says a Thursday departure could save an average of 16% compared with Sunday.
  • Search by whole month, from your own airport. Averages blend many departure cities, and West Coast fares are typically far lower than East Coast ones.
  • Price the whole trip. If a cheap-fare month is also peak hotel season, add up flights, lodging and a rental car before you commit.
  • Using points? Award prices don't always track cash fares. See our transfer partners guide and compare cash and award prices for your dates.

FAQ

Is January or February cheaper to fly to Honolulu?

It depends on the site and your departure city. Momondo points to January and Trip.com's Los Angeles data points to February. Kayak's older snapshot grouped them together as the two cheapest months. Search both from your airport and pick the lower fare.

Is it cheap to fly to Honolulu in summer?

Usually not. Kayak's older data listed June among the most expensive months, and Trip.com listed June and July as high for Los Angeles departures. Summer school breaks push demand up. If you must go in summer, book early and check fares for several departure days.

How far ahead should I book flights to Honolulu?

Aim for at least a month out. Expedia cites ARC data showing 28 or more days ahead is typically 24% cheaper than last-minute, and Kayak points to about 5 weeks. Fares move constantly, so set a price alert and book when your target price appears.
