What is the Grand Palace dress code for visitors?

Short answer: Dress modestly: a shirt with sleeves, plus long, loose trousers or a long skirt. The palace's official visitor page says guests must dress appropriately because the palace is a place of reverence for the Thai people . Dress the part before you leave your hotel. Staff check at the gate.

The details

  • What the official page says not to wear. No sleeveless shirts, vests, short tops, see-through tops, short hot pants or short pants, torn pants, tight pants, bike pants, mini skirts, pants skirts, or sleeping suits .
  • What that means in practice. Wear a T-shirt or blouse with sleeves, and long, loose trousers or a skirt that reaches well below the knee. This applies to men and women alike. Skip leggings, cycling shorts, and anything ripped or sheer. Visitors often cover legs to the ankle, and that is the safest choice. The official list doesn't say exactly where the hem must fall, so don't test it.
  • Scarves are not a sleeve. Many visitors assume a shawl fixes bare shoulders. Don't count on it. Wear a real sleeved top.
  • Shoes. The official list doesn't cover footwear. Expect to take your shoes off before entering some halls and the chapel, so slip-ons are easier than laced shoes. Flip-flops and open-back sandals are the most likely to draw comment.
  • If you arrive underdressed. Typically there is a clothing-loan or rental booth near the entrance. Supplies can run short at busy times, and it adds time to your queue. Fees and deposits change, so check the official page above for the current arrangement rather than relying on a number from us.
  • Hours and special days. The palace can change its hours and dress rules for royal ceremonies. For example, for August 12, 2026, the Bureau of the Royal Household set ticket sales from 8.30am to noon . Check the official site before you go. We aren't quoting regular hours or ticket prices here because we couldn't confirm them on an official page.

Tips

  • Get dressed at the hotel. Bangkok is hot and humid, so choose lightweight linen or thin cotton trousers and a loose short-sleeved shirt.
  • Pack a thin cover-up in your day bag as a backup, but don't rely on it for your shoulders.
  • Wear slip-on shoes with socks if you like. You'll be taking shoes off at some entrances.
  • Go early. It's cooler, and a rental booth is less likely to be sold out of clothing.
  • Do you plan to visit Wat Pho or Wat Arun the same day? Dress for the Grand Palace and you'll be fine at both.

FAQ

Can I wear shorts to the Grand Palace?

No. The official list bans short pants and hot pants. Long, loose trousers or a long skirt are the safe choice for everyone. If you arrive in shorts, you may be able to borrow or rent cover-up clothing at the entrance, but don't plan around that.

Are T-shirts allowed?

Yes, as long as they have sleeves and aren't short, tight, or see-through. The official list bans sleeveless shirts, vests, short tops, and see-through tops. A plain, loose cotton T-shirt with sleeves is a safe option.

Can women wear leggings or yoga pants?

Not safely. The official list bans tight pants and bike pants. Choose loose trousers, wide-leg pants, or a long skirt instead. If you want a skirt, make sure it isn't a mini skirt and reaches well below the knee.

Are the rules the same for men and women?

The official list applies to all visitors. Men and women both need covered shoulders, covered legs, and no torn, tight, or see-through clothing. Special ceremony days can carry stricter requirements, so check the official site if you're visiting around a royal event.

Where do I check the current rules?

Use the official Grand Palace site's visitor information page, listed in Sources below. It covers dress rules, and the palace also posts notices there about ceremony closures and changed hours. Check it a day or two before you go.
