Is it worth renting a car for Waikiki only?
Short answer: No, for most visitors. Waikiki is small and walkable, and hotel parking can cost as much as a budget room in other places. If you plan one or two trips out of town, rent a car for just those days. You can also book a tour or use rideshare for those trips.
The details
- Parking is the main cost. Wayfinder Waikiki offers valet parking only, at $49 per vehicle, per night. (checked Oct 12, 2026) At Waikiki Resort Hotel, overnight self-parking is $45 per day plus tax, subject to change without notice. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Rates differ by hotel and change often, so ask yours before you book. Also ask whether the fee comes on top of any resort fee.
- The airport run doesn't need a rental. SpeediShuttle describes a 21-minute drive from Honolulu Airport to Waikiki. (checked Oct 12, 2026) That company offers shared shuttles and private cars. It also says holoholo is a locally owned rideshare company with curbside pickup at HNL. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Uber and Lyft also serve the airport. Check the airport's ground transportation page for current pickup zones.
- TheBus covers most of the island. The cash fare is $3.25 per boarding, with no transfers. (checked Oct 12, 2026) A HOLO card gets you a cheaper ride and a 2-hour transfer window between buses and Skyline. (checked Oct 12, 2026) HOLO also offers 1-day, 3-day and 7-day passes for TheBus and Skyline. (checked Oct 12, 2026) You can buy a card with a pass at a vending machine in any Skyline station or at an ABC Store in Waikīkī. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- Fare capping helps casual riders. Every fare you pay counts toward a pass. Once you've spent a pass amount, the rest of the day or month is free. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Fares have been revised recently. Check the cap and pass prices on holocard.net before you load money.
- Biki bikeshare suits short hops. It's a docked bikeshare, with stations in Waikiki and nearby Honolulu neighborhoods such as Ala Moana and Kakaʻako. Prices have changed over the years and sources disagree. Check gobiki.org for current plans, and note that going over the time limit adds charges.
- A car-share is a middle path. Hui, a local car-share, says on its own parking guide that parking at your designated Hui station is included with booking. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Check Hui's site for rates, locations and sign-up rules.
Tips
- Book Waikiki lodging by total cost. Add parking and any resort fee to the room rate before you compare hotels.
- If you want a car for a day trip, pick it up the morning you leave and return it that evening. You avoid paying for overnight parking.
- Ask whether your hotel bills parking by calendar day or by 24-hour period. This affects what an early return costs you.
- Buy a HOLO card at the airport area or Waikiki before your first bus ride. Then you can tap on and transfer within the window.
- Use a shared shuttle or private car on arrival if you have lots of luggage. Book it ahead and give your flight number.
FAQ
When does a rental car make sense on Oahu?
If you want to see the North Shore, windward beaches or several trailheads on your own schedule, a car makes sense. Rent it only for those days. For a Waikiki-based trip with one or two excursions, a tour, rideshare or bus is often simpler and cheaper.
Can I get to Diamond Head or Pearl Harbor without a car?
Yes, TheBus serves much of the island, and rideshare or tours are other options. Some attractions have their own entry rules, such as timed reservations. Check each attraction's official site for current requirements before you go.
Is Waikiki walkable?
For the most part, yes. Hotels, beaches, shops and restaurants sit within a compact area. A few hotels at the edges, such as near the Ala Wai, mean longer walks. Biki stations and buses cover the gaps.
Should I rent at the airport or in Waikiki?
If you only want a car for a day or two, a Waikiki pickup avoids paying for parking while it sits idle. Some hotels have rental counters on site. Check the rental company's own site for current Waikiki locations and hours.
Do hotels charge for parking on top of resort fees?
Often yes. Parking is usually a separate nightly charge, and the amount varies a lot by hotel. Confirm the current rate and whether it's per calendar day with the hotel directly before you book.
