Is New Year’s Eve in Lisbon worth it?
Short answer: Yes, if you want a big public party outdoors and are happy to share a packed square with thousands of people. Lisbon's main celebration is free and centered on Terreiro do Paço (also called Praça do Comércio), with fireworks at midnight. If you want empty viewpoints and easy late-night transport, pick another week.
The details
The main event is free and in one place. For 2025/26, Visit Lisboa listed the party at Terreiro do Paço with free entry (checked Oct 12, 2026). Last year's lineup had DJ Mojo at 21h30, Plutónio at 22h30, and fireworks at 00h00 (checked Oct 12, 2026). We did not find the 2026/27 lineup yet. Artists and timing change every year, so check that Visit Lisboa page closer to December.
Expect closures around the square. Last year, the Terreiro do Paço metro station closed at 5 PM, and the square was closed to pedestrians and vehicles at 6 PM for security checks (checked Oct 12, 2026). Plan to arrive early or watch from somewhere else. The city may change these rules, so check city and Metro announcements in late December.
Late transit is the weak spot. The Metro's normal schedule is 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., counted as the last departure from each line's terminal stations (checked Oct 12, 2026). Last year the Metro closed at its usual 1:00 am (checked Oct 12, 2026). The year before, it ran until 3 am on the Blue and Green lines (checked Oct 12, 2026). So don't count on late Metro service. Carris night buses were expected to run fully, subject to downtown traffic restrictions (checked Oct 12, 2026). Shared scooters and bikes were also switched off overnight.
Daytime buses run on holiday schedules. Last season, Carris ran different bus schedules between December 20 and January 2 because of lower expected demand (checked Oct 12, 2026). Expect something similar this year, and check carris.pt for the actual timetable.
Other ways to celebrate. Typically you'll find river cruises timed to the fireworks, hotel and rooftop dinners, fado houses and bar crawls in Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré. All of these usually need advance booking and often cost a lot more than a normal night. Operators set those prices, so compare before you commit.
Tips
- Book early. Hotels, cruises and dinners for December 31 typically sell out first, and prices usually go up. Look at points redemptions early. If you're transferring points, see our transfer partners guide.
- Pick your fireworks spot in advance. The packed square isn't the only option. Waterfront areas away from Terreiro do Paço, such as Belém and Parque das Nações, are often described as more relaxed.
- Stay within walking distance. With Metro service uncertain after 1:00 am, a hotel you can walk to saves a lot of stress.
- Charge your phone and dress warm. You may stand for hours by the river, and the wind off the Tagus can feel colder than the forecast.
- Take your sightseeing day before. Plan big attractions for December 30 or later, and check each attraction's own site for January 1 hours.
FAQ
Is the Lisbon New Year's Eve party free?
The main party at Terreiro do Paço has been free to attend. Visit Lisboa listed it as free entry for 2025/26. Cruises, rooftop parties, hotel galas and fado dinners are separate paid events. Check Visit Lisboa for the 2026/27 details.
What time are the fireworks?
Midnight. Last year's official program listed fireworks at 00h00, with concerts starting earlier in the evening. The 2026/27 schedule hasn't been confirmed, so check Visit Lisboa in December before you plan your night around a specific time.
Will the Metro run all night on December 31?
Don't assume so. Last year it ran only until 1:00 am. The year before, it ran until 3 am on two lines. Carris night buses are the backup, but downtown roads may be closed. Check metrolisboa.pt and carris.pt a few days before.
Is the weather good for New Year's Eve in Lisbon?
Winter in Lisbon is typically mild compared with much of Europe, but it can be damp, cool and windy by the river at night. Pack layers and a rain jacket. Check a forecast a few days ahead.
Should I skip it for a quieter trip?
If you want calm museums and viewpoints without crowds, then yes, go another week. The city is lively at New Year's, and some services run on reduced holiday schedules. If a big outdoor party sounds fun, it's worth it.
