Is there a North Shore shuttle from Waikiki, and what does it cost?
Short answer: Yes. For $10 roundtrip, you board a daily shuttle from pickup locations in Waikīkī or Ko Olina (checked Oct 12, 2026). It's a town-day shuttle to Waialua and Haleʻiwa, not a hop-on, hop-off loop around every North Shore beach. If you want several beaches or sunset, look at a rental car, a private transfer or TheBus.
The details
- Price and dates. Fares rose from $5 to $10, and daily round-trip service from Waikiki to Haleiwa and Waialua was extended through December (checked Oct 12, 2026). The operator's page shows the extension as October 1 – December 31, 2026 (checked Oct 12, 2026). Fares and dates can change again, so check the booking page.
- Ko Olina is shorter. Service from Ko Olina will continue through the end of October for now (checked Oct 12, 2026).
- Time on the ground. The full experience runs 6 to 7 hours, including transportation, so you get a few hours in Waialua and Haleʻiwa (checked Oct 12, 2026). E Noa Tours lists a Waikiki departure time of 8:30AM, but confirm the pickup point and time when you book (checked Oct 12, 2026).
- How to book. Reservations, schedules and pickup locations are available at NorthShoreHuakai.com or by calling 808-591-2561 (checked Oct 12, 2026). Local coverage says reservations are strongly recommended because of demand. Child fares aren't confirmed, so check at checkout.
- Why it exists. It was created after the March 2026 floods that hit North Shore businesses and families (checked Oct 12, 2026). Every rider gets a printed "North Shore Passport" of local businesses. During the pilot, riders also needed proof of purchase from a local merchant to board the return trip. We couldn't confirm whether that rule still applies at $10, so ask when you book.
Other ways to reach the North Shore
- TheBus. Route 52 (Honolulu–Mililani–Haleiwa) serves Haleʻiwa, and the timetable was effective 5/31/26 (checked Oct 12, 2026). Expect a long ride with a transfer, typically two hours or more each way from Waikiki. A single cash ride is $3.25, and an adult HOLO card gives a 2-hour pass for $3.00 or a 24-hour pass for $7.50, plus a $2.00 card fee (checked Oct 12, 2026). Schedules change, so check thebus.org.
- Private airport and Waikiki transfers. North Shore Shuttle (a private operator) lists $95 for Haleiwa Town and the airport as a per-car rate for up to four people (checked Oct 12, 2026). Rates vary by destination and group size.
Tips
- Book the Huakaʻi as early as you can. Seats are limited, and the Ko Olina run ends after October.
- Eat and shop in Haleʻiwa and Waialua. That's the point of the program, and food and drinks aren't included in the fare.
- If you want Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and the Pipeline, skip the Huakaʻi and use a car or a private transfer.
- Carry a HOLO card or exact cash if you use TheBus. TheBus does not accept credit or debit cards (checked Oct 12, 2026).
- Need ADA services? Call the operator before you reserve.
FAQ
Is the $5 price still valid?
No. The $5 fare applied to the 90-day summer pilot. The round-trip fare increased from $5 to $10 to help cover operating costs (checked Oct 12, 2026). Some older articles still show $5, so book at northshorehuakai.com.
Does the shuttle run after December 2026?
Not as far as we can tell. The operator's Waikiki listing says Ends 12/31/2026 (checked Oct 12, 2026). Organizers may extend it again, but nothing is announced. Check northshorehuakai.com before planning a 2027 trip around it.
Can I ride from Ko Olina?
Yes, for now. Ko Olina pickups are scheduled through the end of October 2026 only. After that, the Waikiki route is the one advertised through December. Confirm pickup locations and times when you reserve.
Is it a good option for surf-viewing and beach hopping?
Not really. The shuttle is built around Waialua and Haleʻiwa, with a 6 to 7 hour outing that includes transportation. For several beaches, Pipeline surf-watching or sunset, a rental car or a private transfer gives you more control.
Is TheBus cheaper?
Yes, per person, but it's slower. TheBus costs a few dollars per ride, though you'll likely transfer and the trip takes much longer than a direct shuttle. The Huakaʻi's $10 round trip is the better deal if its schedule fits your day.
