Is Oahu rainy in summer, and which side of the island stays dry?
Short answer: Summer is the drier time of year on Oahu, and the leeward (south and west) side stays driest. The windward (east) side gets more showers, mostly short ones. Tropical weather is the exception, and the Central Pacific hurricane season runs through November 30.
The details
- Summer is the drier season. Across Hawaii's lowlands, summer has the lowest average monthly rainfall. The Kona Coast of Hawaii Island is the exception, and that isn't Oahu. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Hawaii's tourism board describes Oahu summer as warmer and drier, with trade winds keeping things comfortable. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- West and south are dry, east is wet. The tourism board says Oahu is generally drier on the western (leeward) side and wetter on the eastern (windward) side. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The cause is terrain. Trade-wind air rises over the mountains and drops rain, so rainfall is heaviest on upper slopes and crests and lightest in the leeward lowlands. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- The driest spot is the Waianae coast. Climate records name Waianae on Oahu's leeward coast among the island's driest, least cloudy areas. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Waikiki and Honolulu are also leeward, so they're generally on the drier side too. Ko Olina is farther up the same leeward coast and is generally dry as well.
- Most showers are light and brief. Hawaii's climate is full of showers, but the vast majority are light and short, a quick sprinkle and nothing more. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Mountains and windward slopes hold most of the cloud, while leeward lowlands often have only scattered clouds. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- Storms are the exception. Even dry areas can get hit hard. Relatively dry spots can receive more than half their average annual rainfall within a day or a few hours. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Leeward areas get most of their rain from a few winter storms. (checked Oct 12, 2026)
- Hurricane season overlaps your trip. The Central Pacific season officially runs June 1 to November 30. (checked Oct 12, 2026) NOAA's 2026 outlook gave a 70 percent chance of an above-normal season, with 5 to 13 named storms expected. That is a basin-wide outlook and doesn't predict impacts on Hawaii. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Direct hits on Oahu are rare, but a passing system can bring heavy rain and surf. Seasonal outlooks and dates can change, so check the Central Pacific Hurricane Center before you book.
Tips
- Stay leeward for the best odds of sun. That means Waikiki or Honolulu, Ko Olina, or the Waianae coast. Check the forecast on the day you go, because the island's weather varies from one area to the next.
- Plan windward days (Kailua, Kaneohe) with flexibility. Pack a light rain layer and treat showers as part of the scenery. They're usually brief.
- Skip stream and valley hikes if a flash flood watch is posted. Check current watches and warnings on the National Weather Service Honolulu page, weather.gov/hfo.
- Book flexible fares and refundable rooms for late summer and early fall. That's when tropical systems are a possible disruption. Our transfer partners guide explains how to move points when plans change.
- Consider travel insurance if you're booking August through November.
FAQ
Is Oahu's weather bad in summer?
No. Summer is generally Oahu's drier, warmer season, and trade winds help keep it comfortable. The tourism board calls Oahu a good destination year-round. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Expect the occasional passing shower, especially on the windward side, and keep an eye on tropical weather forecasts from August on.
Which side of Oahu is the driest?
The leeward side, which means the south and west coasts. Waianae is named among the driest, least cloudy parts of the island. (checked Oct 12, 2026) Waikiki and Honolulu are also on the sheltered side of the Koolau Mountains and generally get less rain than the windward east.
Does it rain all day on the windward side?
Usually not. Most Hawaii showers are light and brief. (checked Oct 12, 2026) The windward side is cloudier and wetter than the leeward side, though, and a storm system can bring steady, heavy rain to any part of the island. Check the forecast before you commit to an outdoor day.
