Is the Santa Justa Lift worth it?

Short answer: Not at the moment, because the lift is closed. Visit Lisboa's page for the Elevador de Santa Justa is labeled "Closed temporarily" . When it reopens, it's worth it mainly if it's free or cheap for you, such as with a Lisboa Card. It isn't worth it as a paid, 45-minute-queue view.

The details

  • Status. The lift has been out of service since September 2025, after the Glória funicular accident led Carris to suspend Lisbon's historic lifts and funiculars for inspection. We found no official reopening date. Press reports of a return in early 2027 are unconfirmed. Carris (carris.pt) and Visit Lisboa are the places to check, and reopening dates have already slipped once.
  • Fare when it runs. Carris is the operator. Its 2025 table listed the on-board Santa Justa ticket, good for up to 2 trips, at €6.10 ≈ $6.87 . Carris sets fares by calendar year, and the 2026 figure is likely a little higher. Check the current Carris fare page rather than trusting any blog, including ours.
  • Lisboa Card. Visit Lisboa marks the lift "Free with Lisboa Card" . That makes the ride easy to justify if you already own the card for other sights. It isn't a reason to buy the card.
  • The rooftop viewpoint is separate. The Miradouro do Elevador de Santa Justa is not included in the Lisboa Card. It costs €5 ≈ $5.63, is listed as open 9am to 9pm, and admits a maximum of 20 visitors at once . So a ride plus the platform can add up to roughly €11 ≈ $12 per person at list prices. Those prices come from two different pages and years.
  • The view. From the top you see Baixa, the castle, the Tagus and the ruins of the Convento do Carmo church . Lisbon has many free viewpoints that show similar rooftops, so you aren't missing a unique panorama.

What to do instead while it's closed

  • Walk it. The lift only saves you a short, steep climb between Baixa and Chiado. Take your time, or use the Baixa-Chiado metro station, which connects the two levels.
  • Photograph it from below. The iron tower is most striking from Rua do Ouro (also called Rua Áurea) and Rua de Santa Justa. That costs nothing.
  • See the Carmo ruins. Largo do Carmo, at the top, has the roofless Convento do Carmo church mentioned above. Check its own site for hours and entry fees.

Tips

  • Check carris.pt and the Visit Lisboa page the week you travel. Don't plan a day around the lift.
  • If it reopens and you want the ride, go first thing in the morning or near closing. Daytime queues have been long in past years.
  • If you do queue, consider walking up to Largo do Carmo and riding down instead. Uphill lines are usually the long ones.
  • Don't buy a Lisboa Card or a transit pass just for this lift. Buy one only if the rest of your itinerary justifies it.
  • Skip third-party "skip-the-line" lift tickets. We found no advance-booking system for the lift on official pages.

FAQ

Is the Santa Justa Lift open right now?

No, as far as we can confirm. Visit Lisboa lists it as temporarily closed, and we found no official reopening date. Dates floated in the press have not been confirmed by Carris. Check Carris's service-alert pages before you go, and treat any reopening date from a blog as a guess.

How much does the Santa Justa Lift cost?

When running, Carris's 2025 on-board ticket was €6.10 ≈ $6.87 for up to two trips, per its price table. The 2026 fare may be higher. The rooftop viewpoint was listed separately at €5 ≈ $5.63 by Visit Lisboa. Check the current Carris fare page for today's price.

Does the Lisboa Card include the Santa Justa Lift?

Visit Lisboa says the lift is free with the Lisboa Card. It also says the rooftop viewpoint is not included in the card. So expect the ride to be covered once it reopens, and the platform to cost extra.

Is there a free way up to Chiado?

Yes. You can walk up from Baixa, or take the metro to Baixa-Chiado. Either way you reach the same upper neighborhood the lift serves, without queuing or paying anything extra beyond your normal transit fare.

Is the Santa Justa Lift worth it when it reopens?

It's a fun, historic ride with a good rooftop view, but paying list price for the ride and viewpoint is steep for a short trip. It's best as a free add-on with a Lisboa Card. Otherwise photograph it from the street and save your money for other sights.
