Should I fly into Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airport in Bangkok?
Short answer: For most travelers, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the better airport. Most full-service international airlines use it, and it has a direct train into the city. Don Mueang (DMK) is mainly a low-cost-carrier hub, so you'll usually end up there because of the fare, not by choice. If both airports work for your flight, ask which one is closer to your hotel.
The details
Which airlines use which airport. Suvarnabhumi is Bangkok's main international gateway. It handles the full-service and long-haul carriers, which is where most points-and-miles award tickets end up. Don Mueang is Thailand's budget hub. It is home to low-cost carriers such as Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air. Airline route maps shift by season, so check your airline's booking page for the exact airport code (BKK or DMK) before you pay.
Getting into the city from Suvarnabhumi. The Airport Rail Link (also called the City Line) starts in the airport basement. It runs to Phaya Thai, with an interchange to the MRT subway at Makkasan and to the BTS Skytrain at Phaya Thai. The ride typically takes about 30 minutes or less. Fares are distance-based and low, and trains run from early morning until around midnight. This is the most traffic-proof option when you have light luggage. Check the current fare and last-train time with the Airport Rail Link operator or Airports of Thailand.
Getting into the city from Don Mueang. DMK has no Airport Rail Link. The usual rail option is the State Railway of Thailand's Dark Red Line commuter train. Its station is a short walk from the terminal by pedestrian bridge, and it goes to Bang Sue Grand Station. There you can change to the MRT Blue Line. Airport buses and metered taxis also serve DMK. Fares, first-train and last-train times, and bus routes change, so confirm them on the State Railway of Thailand's official page.
Where you're staying matters. Suvarnabhumi is on the eastern edge of the city. It's convenient for Sukhumvit and Pratunam hotels via the rail link. Don Mueang is in the north. It's convenient for Chatuchak and for the northern rail lines, but it's farther from most central hotels. Bangkok traffic can make taxi times swing widely, so treat any taxi estimate as a rough guide.
Switching airports is a real trip. There is a free Airports of Thailand shuttle between the two. It's only for passengers connecting between flights at the two airports. Passengers must be on transit or transfer flights between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang only (checked Oct 12, 2026). Staff check your documents first: the boarding pass and the passport or ID card must be shown before boarding (checked Oct 12, 2026).
Pickup is at Terminal 1, 1st Floor, Gate 6 at Don Mueang, with service hours of 5:00 a.m. to midnight (checked Oct 12, 2026). At Suvarnabhumi it's the 2nd Floor, Gate 3 platform area (checked Oct 12, 2026). That page says the trip takes 1–2 hours (checked Oct 12, 2026). Frequency may differ from what the page lists, so check Airports of Thailand for the current timetable.
Tips
- Book the airport you actually want. Many flight-search sites list "Bangkok (BKK)" and "Bangkok (DMK)" separately. A cheap fare may land at the airport that's far from your hotel.
- Don't self-connect between airports on one day. If you must, leave a very long buffer and keep the checked bags checked through if the airline allows it.
- Arriving at DMK in the evening rush? Immigration lines can build at peak hours, so don't book a tight onward connection.
- Late-night arrival? Rail services stop around midnight at both airports. Have a taxi or pre-booked car as a backup, and use the metered queue or a ride-hailing app.
- Check the luggage rules on low-cost carriers out of DMK. Fees for bags and seats are usually extra.
FAQ
Is Suvarnabhumi better than Don Mueang?
For most international trips, yes. It has the full-service carriers and a direct train into the city. Don Mueang can be the better pick if your flight is on a budget carrier, you're heading to northern Bangkok, or you're connecting to a domestic flight there.
Can I take a train from Don Mueang to central Bangkok?
Yes, but not the Airport Rail Link. The Dark Red Line commuter train runs from the station near the terminal to Bang Sue Grand Station. From there you can change to the MRT Blue Line. Confirm the current fare and operating hours with the State Railway of Thailand.
Is the shuttle between the two airports free for everyone?
No. It's for passengers who are transferring between flights at the two airports. You'll need your boarding pass and passport or ID. The official Thai government tourism page we checked says it's free for those passengers (checked Oct 12, 2026).
Can I use points for flights to Bangkok?
Usually yes, but mostly on full-service carriers, and those mostly fly to Suvarnabhumi. Low-cost carriers at Don Mueang don't generally release award seats through major partner programs. Search by the BKK code for award space.
Which airport is closer to the city center?
Neither is truly central. Don Mueang is in the north and Suvarnabhumi is in the east. Your hotel's location and traffic matter more than the straight-line distance. Compare the rail connection to your own neighborhood.
