Carnival Freedom Returns After Dry Dock; Norfolk 2028/29 Opens
Carnival Freedom has returned to service after a 35-day dry dock at Chantier Naval de Marseille, and Carnival has opened reservations for a new 2028/29 Norfolk season (checked Oct 13, 2026). The announcement is dated Oct 8, 2026.
What changed on the ship
The refit added a new whale-tail funnel, lowered in height to allow access to more ports, and a redesigned casino with 100+ additional gaming machines. Also included: a refreshed arcade, updated retail, accessibility improvements and a new "From Sea to Shining Sea" bow crest (checked Oct 13, 2026).
Where it goes next
The ship arrived in Barcelona Oct 9 for an 8-day Mediterranean cruise, followed by a 13-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic crossing arriving at Port Canaveral Oct 30. It homeports at Port Canaveral through May 2027, then repositions to Norfolk, Virginia (checked Oct 13, 2026). Dates are as of Oct 13, 2026; confirm on Carnival's announcement page.
Norfolk 2028/29
The Norfolk season sails through April 2029 with six- to eight-day trips to The Bahamas, Bermuda, Eastern Caribbean and Canada. Ports include Celebration Key, RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk and Amber Cove. Reservations for 2028/29 are open; the release does not give an exact opening date (checked Oct 13, 2026).
Points angle
Cruise fares typically code as travel on most cards, though your issuer decides, so check how your card categorizes the purchase. We are not quoting fares because the announcement gives none. If Norfolk is your home port, this is a drive-to-the-ship option, but sailings that far out are worth booking only with a refund policy you have read.
