Costa Rica + Panama small-ship cruise (UnCruise / Lindblad)

At a glance
- Format: a small expedition ship (dozens of guests, not thousands), 7 nights (some departures run 8; confirm on the line's page), linking Panama City and Costa Rica's Pacific coast in either direction.
- Operators: UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic are the typical lines. Confirm the exact route and ship for your dates on the line's official site.
- Highlights: a Panama Canal daylight transit (partial or full, line-dependent), Gulf of Panama islands, Golfo Dulce, the Osa Peninsula edge near Corcovado, Manuel Antonio, and a beach or island stop such as Curu or Isla Tortuga.
- Airports: Tocumen (PTY) for Panama City; Juan Santamaria (San Jose area) for Costa Rica. Some itineraries use Liberia instead, so check which.
- Fare style: expedition fares usually bundle excursions, gear and meals. Check what-is-included on the line's page.
- Best months: see "When to go" below; rainy season is real on this coast.
<!– Check this on the official page before you book.
- Advisories: the State Department listed both Costa Rica and Panama at Level 2 when we last checked, and parts of Panama's Darien region at Level 4. Details below.
- Biggest mistake: booking flights before the line confirms the exact embarkation and debarkation ports and the transfer time.
When to go. Both countries have a dry season and a wetter season, and the Pacific coast of Costa Rica is noticeably wetter in the second half of the year. Lines usually publish their Panama and Costa Rica departures across a limited set of months, so the calendar on the line's itinerary page decides your window more than the weather does. Lindblad's listing we opened showed a January departure for its canal-and-Costa-Rica expedition (checked Oct 17, 2026); UnCruise showed a seven-night Costa Rica roundtrip from Liberia (checked Oct 17, 2026). Neither page we saw listed every date, so open the line's departure calendar.
The route in brief. A representative Panama-to-Costa Rica week starts in Panama City, watches or transits the Panama Canal in daylight, drifts through the Gulf of Panama islands, crosses into Costa Rican waters, anchors in Golfo Dulce beside the Osa Peninsula, calls at Manuel Antonio, and ends near Puerto Caldera or Herradura. Reverse it for Costa Rica to Panama. Small ships use skiffs and landings rather than piers, so most days mix a morning outing and an afternoon swim, hike or kayak. The line decides the order, and weather can change it.
Rough cost, three ways. We do not quote cabin prices because they change daily. Fill in the blanks from the line's page for your sailing.

<!– At last check, the State Department listed Costa Rica at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, advisory issued April 02, 2026 (the page showed two dates, April 02, 2026 and September 04, 2026; check travel.state.gov) (checked Oct 17, 2026). It listed Panama at Level 2, issued August 19, 2026, with parts of the Darien Region and the Mosquito Gulf at Level 4, Do Not Travel (checked Oct 17, 2026). Costa Rica's tourism board says travelers need a valid passport and may be asked for a return or onward ticket, and accepts proof of passage on a cruise ship (checked Oct 17, 2026). Check yellow-fever and other health requirements on the CDC and official country pages for your own travel history. Confirm all of this before you book.
How to choose between the two lines. UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad-National Geographic both run small ships and both sell expedition-style weeks, but they differ in feel and in what they emphasize. Read each line's itinerary page side by side and ask four questions. How many guests does the ship carry? What is included in the fare, and what is not? Is the canal a full transit, a partial transit or a viewing? And does the route start and end in the cities you can reach cheaply? UnCruise's page we opened described an all-inclusive fare covering excursions, adventure equipment, meals, beverages including alcohol, transfers and baggage handling (checked Oct 17, 2026). For Lindblad, read the inclusions on its own itinerary page, because we could not confirm them from the page we opened.
Budget tip. Because small-ship fares usually bundle activities, gear, meals and drinks, the extras you add are mostly flights, hotels and tips. Price those first, and you will see whether the fare or the flights are the bigger lever for your trip. Fares are set by the line, so compare departure dates on its own page.
What a day feels like. Expect early starts, a morning landing by skiff, a swim or paddle at midday, a talk in the afternoon and a long dinner with a daily recap. There is no casino and no crowd. You will be outdoors more than you expect, so bring layers that dry fast.
Before you book anything. Make a short list: the line's departure dates, the embarkation and debarkation ports, the flight plan, and the deposit and cancellation terms on the line's terms page. Then price the trip three ways in the blanks above and compare.
