At a glance

lesund, Geiranger, Bergen, a sea day, back to Amsterdam. Seven nights, representative only.

  • Best months: late May to early September is the usual fjords season; the shoulder months trade long daylight for lower fares. Confirm your line's season on its own itinerary page.
  • Embarkation: Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 27 , or Cruise Port Rotterdam, Wilhelminakade 699 .
  • Airport: Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) serves both ports by NS train.
  • Money: euros in the Netherlands, Norwegian kroner (NOK) in Norway; cards are widely accepted, last we checked, but carry a backup.
  • Entry: US passport holders; see the entry paragraph below and re-check the EU's EES and ETIAS status before you book.
  • Safety: State Department level for Norway is 1, issued July 6, 2026 ; the Netherlands is level 2, issued August 9, 2024 . Check this on the official page before you book.
  • Biggest first-timer mistake: booking a ship excursion, a flight and a train all with no slack. Fjord ports run on tenders and weather.

The route in one paragraph

lesund, an Art Nouveau town rebuilt after a 1904 fire, with a short climb to a city viewpoint. Day five is Geiranger, a narrow, steep-walled fjord with waterfalls; large ships often anchor and tender passengers in. Day six is Bergen, with the Bryggen wharf and the Fløibanen funicular. A second sea day carries you home, and you disembark in Amsterdam on day eight. Some lines also sell a Northern Europe pattern: Copenhagen, Oslo or Kiel and Hamburg, with North Sea and Baltic days. That variant is covered in chapter 1.

When to go

Summer gives long daylight and usually steadier road and excursion operations; confirm with your operator. Higher mountain roads such as the Dalsnibba and Trollstigen routes are seasonal, and opening dates shift year to year; check the Norwegian Public Roads Administration or https://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en/routes/geiranger–trollstigen/ close to sailing. Rain is a normal part of western Norway in any month, so pack for it. The Fløibanen funicular closes for annual maintenance in short windows; its page lists 2–5 November 2026 and 15–18 February 2027 , which sit outside the main fjords season.

What to book before you go

lesund and Bergen, everything central is walkable from the pier or a short shuttle, so independent plans are easy. Second, decide how much slack to build around the flights. Because the ship returns early on day eight, book flights home for the afternoon rather than the morning. Whichever way you go, confirm your line's own all-aboard time and tender rules in its app; those are the rules that matter on the day.

Embarkation port basics

Amsterdam's terminal is central, a short distance east of Centraal Station along the IJ waterfront. Rotterdam's terminal is on the Wilhelminapier at Kop van Zuid, with metro and a water taxi service listed on the port's own site . From Schiphol, both are a direct or near-direct NS train away; the train takes you to Amsterdam Centraal or Rotterdam Centraal, and a short tram, metro, taxi or walk finishes the trip. Fares and times: confirm on https://www.ns.nl before you travel. Sleep near the airport or near Centraal Station the night before if you fly in on the day of sailing; the risk of a delayed transatlantic flight is the reason, not comfort.

Rough cost, three ways

Fill these from the official pages named; we do not quote a specific sailing's cabin price.

Entry documents

Both the Netherlands and Norway are Schengen countries, last we checked; confirm on https://travel.state.gov. Bring a passport valid for the length required by Schengen rules; the common rule is valid for at least three months beyond your departure date and issued within the last ten years. We have not confirmed the current wording, so check https://travel.state.gov and the Norwegian immigration pages at https://www.udi.no/en/. The EU's Entry/Exit System and the future ETIAS travel authorisation are being phased in; their status and start dates changed repeatedly, so check https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en and your cruise line's document page before you sail. Check this on the official page before you book.

Three free things in port

  1. Eidfjord waterfront walk. A flat stroll beside the fjord with the village behind you. Photo note: stand on the quay and shoot back toward the village with the steep green fjord walls above.

lesund Aksla viewpoint (climb on foot).** The viewpoint sits above the town and looks across harbour islands and the Art Nouveau rooftops. Photo note: wide shot of the harbour and Art Nouveau roofs from the top. Steps are steep; check the city's page at https://www.alesund.kommune.no for access details.

  1. Bergen Bryggen waterfront. The wooden wharf houses are on the harbour edge and need no ticket to walk past. Photo note: the gabled wooden fronts from across the harbour in late light.

Good to know before you go

This guide follows one representative 7-night Norway round trip. Your sailing's order, calls and times will differ, and lines swap ports for weather, tender conditions or berth congestion. Everything below is as of 2026-10-17; confirm on your cruise line's itinerary page, the port pages named in the text, or in your booking and the line's app before you sail.
