Holland America Norway and North Cape Midnight Sun Cruise Itinerary Guide (from Rotterdam)
At a glance
- Sailing: Holland America Line's roughly 14-day Norwegian fjords and North Cape (Nordkapp) midnight-sun voyage, round trip from Rotterdam (some departures use Amsterdam), usually June to July. Length and ports vary; confirm yours.
- Fly into: Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the usual gateway; Rotterdam The Hague (RTM) is smaller. Rotterdam is a short rail ride from Schiphol (fare: check ns.nl, not fetched).
lesund, Trondheim, Lofoten (Leknes area), Tromsø, Honningsvåg for the North Cape, plus fjord scenic cruising. Tender ports vary: confirm.
- Midnight sun: Tromsø's official midnight sun runs 20 May to 22 July (checked Oct 12, 2026). For Nordkapp, typically late May to late July; confirm.
- Money: Norway uses the krone (NOK); the Netherlands uses the euro. Ship onboard spending is billed in USD.
- Free highlight: Bergen's Bryggen waterfront walk costs nothing; the Fløibanen funicular above it is a paid ride with a fixed official fare.
- Entry: US passport holders: valid passport needed; confirm the current ETIAS and EES start dates on the official EU page.
- Biggest mistake: booking the North Cape bus or tour late, or assuming port days run on a fixed schedule. Tender and weather changes are normal on this route.
Who this sailing is for, and who should skip it
It suits couples, first-time European cruisers who want scenery over nightlife, and repeat cruisers who like a calm, port-heavy ship. Holland America's style is traditionally quieter and more mature than the big resort ships, though we have not checked what is on your specific ship. It is a good fit if you like dramatic coastline, long daylight, and sensible walking days.
Skip it if you want beach days, a party atmosphere, or warm weather. Even in July, the Arctic ports can be cold, windy and wet, and the midnight sun is often hidden by cloud. Families with small children may find the port days long. If you get seasick, the open-sea crossing from the Netherlands and the Norwegian Sea days can be lumpy.
The route in one paragraph
ndalsnes, Eidfjord and Hardangerfjord scenery), spend another sea day, and return to Rotterdam. That is the typical published order; your sailing may swap, add or drop ports.
Embarkation basics: Rotterdam
Holland America sails from the Rotterdam cruise terminal in the Kop van Zuid district, a short taxi ride from the city centre. We could not open the port's own page (it redirected), so confirm the terminal address, check-in times and parking on your cruise documents and on cruiseportrotterdam.nl. A day of pre-cruise sleep in Rotterdam beats a same-morning flight: arrive the day before if you can. Taxis and the metro or water taxi are the easy options; confirm fares on rotterdam.info or 9292.nl.

For a paid-but-worthwhile reference: Tromsø's Fjellheisen cable car costs NOK 645 adult round trip, NOK 310 child, NOK 1,360 family (2+2) (checked Oct 12, 2026). Bergen's Fløibanen funicular return is NOK 200 adult in April to September if you buy through app, web or machine, NOK 220 otherwise; child NOK 100/120 (checked Oct 12, 2026). Documents and entry rules
- Passport: bring a passport valid well beyond your return date; check the Schengen rules on the official EU page.
- Closed-loop note: the US closed-loop cruise exception (which lets some US citizens sail without a passport) applies to cruises that start and end at the same US port. Rotterdam is not a US port, so plan on a passport; confirm the rule on cbp.gov.
- ETIAS / EES: US passport holders are expected to be covered by Europe's entry-exit system and travel authorisation; confirm the current start date on the official EU page (travel-europe.europa.eu). We could not open that page on 2026-10-12.
- Safety: Norway is Level 1 (Exercise normal precautions), issued July 6, 2026 . The Netherlands is Level 2 (Exercise increased caution), issued August 9, 2024 .

Good to know before you go
We checked the facts below on 2026-10-12, but cruise itineraries, port calls, fees and government rules move often and can change after you book (weather, tendering, port congestion). Confirm the port list, fees, schedules and advisories on hollandamerica.com, in your booking, and on the official pages named here before you pay for anything. The day-by-day is a representative plan labeled "typical published order; confirm your sailing's port list on hollandamerica.com".
