Viking Seine: Paris and the Heart of Normandy
At a glance
- Sailing: 8 days, Paris round trip on the Seine, typically on a Viking Longship (confirm ship and date on vikingrivercruises.com).
- Typical stops: Paris, Vernon for Giverny, Les Andelys, Rouen, Caudebec-en-Caux for the Normandy beaches, then back toward Paris. Order and docks vary by date; this is the typical published order, so confirm your sailing on vikingrivercruises.com.
- Money: euros (cards work almost everywhere); the cruise itself is typically billed in USD.
- Ship: Viking river ships are typically adults-only (18+); confirm on the line's site.
- Longest day: the D-Day beaches excursion, typically a full day with roughly 2 to 3 hours of coach each way.
- Airport: Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly; the ship is in or near Paris, so fly in a day early.
- Documents: valid US passport; see entry rules below.
- Cabin fares: not quoted here. They change daily; fill in your own from the official booking page.
Who it is for, and who it is not
This sailing suits first-time river cruisers, couples, and travelers who want Impressionist gardens, a Gothic cathedral city and the World War II sites without changing hotels. It suits people who like a small ship with a set daily rhythm and included tours. It is not ideal for kids (adults-only ship, typically), for anyone who dislikes guided groups, or for travelers who want a full Paris vacation: you get a day or so of Paris, not a week. People with limited mobility should check each excursion's walking level; cobbles in Rouen, the climb at Les Andelys and uneven ground at the beaches are real.
The route in one paragraph
You board in Paris and spend a first evening aboard, usually with a city orientation the next morning. The ship then follows the Seine's long loops northwest. Vernon is the gateway to Monet's house and garden at Giverny, and Les Andelys sits under the ruined Chateau Gaillard. Rouen is the big stop, with its cathedral, half-timbered streets and the square where Joan of Arc is remembered, and the ship often stays overnight. From Caudebec-en-Caux, a full-day coach trip covers the Normandy landing beaches and the American cemetery above Omaha. You sail back through the river's meanders to Paris on the last night. Low or high water can swap a section of sailing for a coach transfer, so treat the order as a plan, not a promise.
Embarkation port basics
Viking's Seine ships typically dock in the Paris area; the exact berth varies, so confirm the address and check-in time in your documents. Typically you arrive from the airport by pre-booked transfer, taxi or RER and metro. Boarding opens in the afternoon, and luggage goes straight to your cabin. Use the Paris transit tables in the full guide for the airport-to-pier options. Flying in the day before keeps a delayed flight from costing you the first night.

Three free things (with photo subjects)
- Paris, embarkation evening: walk the Seine embankment near your berth at dusk. Photo subject: the Eiffel Tower lit up from the river quay.
- Vernon or Giverny: a stroll along the Seine and the old town of Vernon costs nothing, even if you skip the paid garden. Photo subject: the half-timbered old town or the river with the old mill.
- Rouen: wander the old town and stand in front of the cathedral facade; entry to the cathedral is typically free, so confirm on the cathedral's official page. Photo subject: the cathedral's west front and the Gros-Horloge street.
There is also free sky on the sailing day: the Seine's chalk cliffs and meanders near the lower river, best from the sundeck.
Entry and document rules
US citizens need a valid passport for France (typically valid beyond your departure date; confirm on travel.state.gov). Because this cruise begins and ends in Paris by air, the closed-loop cruise exemption for US citizens (cbp.gov) does not matter for the Atlantic crossing; you fly home with your passport as normal. The EU is rolling out EES entry checks and ETIAS authorization for visa-exempt visitors; start dates have shifted, so confirm both on travel-europe.europa.eu before you book. State Department advisory for France: Level 2, "Exercise increased caution," page dated May 28, 2025 (checked Oct 12, 2026).
What you get for the money
Viking river cruises typically include shore excursions in each port, onboard dining with wine and beer at meals, and Wi-Fi, but the exact list changes by sailing; confirm on the line's inclusions page before you compare it with other lines. Tips are typically extra. Optional tours cost extra.
Pacing, in one line
Two easy days, one long day, one rest day; do not stack heavy sightseeing around the beaches day.
Practical notes before you go
Carry a small daypack for excursions, a refillable bottle and a phone with offline copies of your documents. Check your phone plan for roaming, and set up the Viking app before departure. Pick up a few French phrases (hello, thank you, please, where is) and use them; shopkeepers notice. Keep cash for small things.

Good to know before you go
We checked what we could on 2026-10-12, but most line, museum and transit pages would not open from our research desk, so many details below are marked "typically" and name the page to confirm. Itineraries, docking spots, excursion lists, fees and opening dates move with river levels, season and the line's own updates. Confirm everything on the official pages named here and in your booking before you pay or sail.
