Guides
Iceland in Winter: Northern Lights, Ice Caves and the Golden Circle

At a glance
- Season: November to March for aurora and ice caves; the two lead-in months are shoulder season with more road risk than guides admit.
- Airport: Keflavík (KEF), about 45 minutes by Flybus to Reykjavík (checked Oct 12, 2026).
- Daylight: typically ~5 hours in late December, ~10 by late February. Check vedur.is for exact times.
- Base: Reykjavík for nights 1-2 and 5; Vík or the south coast for nights 3-4.
- Entry: US citizens, visa-free up to 90 days; Iceland is Schengen, so EES fingerprinting applies .
- State Department advisory: Level 1, Exercise normal precautions, issued May 5, 2026 (page updated May 14, 2026) .
- Emergencies: 112.
- Book ahead: ice cave tours, rental 4×4, lagoon time slots.
- Already covered elsewhere: see our South Coast guide and Ring Road guide. This guide is the winter-only angle.
When to go
Aurora needs dark and partly clear skies, so the dark months matter, and cloud matters more than anything else. Late November to early February gives the longest nights and the shortest, most cramped days. Late February to March trades some darkness for noticeably more daylight to drive and sightsee. Natural ice caves under the glacier are a winter product: they are generally visited only with a licensed guide, and tours can be cancelled for weather and melt. Ask the operator for their own cancellation terms before paying.
Where to stay, briefly
- Reykjavík (101 and the harbour): walkable cafes, the city bus, and the easiest base for Golden Circle tours that pick up in town.
- Near Vík or the south coast: puts you hours closer to Jökulsárlón and darker skies, but few dining options and early closures in winter.
- Keflavík: only for very early flights; you give up the city.

Entry rules
No visa for US citizens for up to 90 days. Passport valid 3 months beyond departure (6 recommended), 2 blank pages, proof of funds and onward ticket may be requested (checked Oct 12, 2026). Three free things
- Þingvellir at dawn. The rift valley in low winter light. Photo: snow-dusted Almannagjá rift wall with the sun low over the plain.
- Reykjavík waterfront walk to Harpa. Photo: Harpa's glass facade at blue hour from the harbour.
- A dark-sky stop outside town. Photo: a quiet roadside pullout with aurora over a snow field (only if the forecast cooperates; never promised).
Going to Mass
Landakotskirkja (Christ the King Cathedral): the parish lists Mass times at https://catholica.is/krist-konungssokn/. Full times are in the full guide.
Winter reality check (read before booking)
Short days drive everything. Plan one big outing a day, not three. In late December you may have roughly five hours of usable daylight, so a Jökulsárlón day from Reykjavík is a long drive each way, much of it in the dark. Our plan splits the south coast over two nights to avoid that.
Roads can close with little notice, particularly on the south coast stretch and over mountain passes. Highland F-roads are closed in winter. The official road page is umferdin.is; we were redirected there from road.is on 2026-10-12 but did not read road conditions, so check it live. Safetravel.is states plainly that "the weather and road conditions in Iceland are different from what you are used to and can change fast" (checked Oct 12, 2026). If you have never driven on snow and ice, take a guided tour for the Golden Circle and the glacier days and save the rental for dry, short legs.
The aurora, honestly
No guide can promise lights. You need three things: darkness, clear sky, and some solar activity. The Icelandic Met Office publishes a 0 to 9 aurora forecast for midnight, with a cloud-cover map, because "the spectacle of Aurora Borealis requires dark and partly clear skies" (checked Oct 12, 2026). Cloud forecast is usually a better deciding factor than the activity number. Our itinerary builds in three separate dark evenings so one cloudy night does not sink the trip.
Sneaker waves at Reynisfjara
Reynisfjara's black sand beach is beautiful and dangerous. Waves can run far past the point where the previous one stopped, and the water is cold enough to be life-threatening within minutes. Stay well back from the waterline, never turn your back to the sea, and respect any warning light or sign on site. Check safetravel.is for the current beach advisory. Stay back: it is not a photo spot worth risk.
Points angle, short version
Iceland is cheap to reach on points if you are flexible. Transfer partners that fly there from the US vary by season, so search before you transfer. Our verified chart lets you move Chase points 1:1 to United or Flying Blue, Amex 1:1 to Delta or Flying Blue, Capital One 1:1 to Flying Blue or Turkish, and Bilt 1:1 to United or Alaska Atmos. The full guide shows the search steps. Never transfer before you see seats.

Good to know before you go
We checked the pages below on 2026-10-12. Winter in Iceland changes by the hour: roads close, tours cancel, and opening times shift. Confirm on safetravel.is, umferdin.is and vedur.is, and on each attraction's own social accounts, the morning you go.
