Norwegian Eastern Caribbean from Port Canaveral: Great Stirrup Cay and the 7-Night Itinerary, Port by Port (2026)

By PerkJolt Travel Desk
Travel scene

At a glance

  • Homeport: Port Canaveral, Florida, about 45 minutes east of Orlando International (MCO) by road (typical; check a live map on the day).
  • Length: 7 nights is the classic pattern. Port calls vary by sailing, so read your itinerary tab.
  • Typical ports "as scheduled as of 2026-10-12; varies by sailing": Great Stirrup Cay (NCL's Bahamas private island), Puerto Plata (Taino Bay, Dominican Republic), St. Thomas (USVI), and Tortola (BVI) or San Juan on some sailings. Confirm on ncl.com.
  • Best fit: Florida-flight-friendly families and first-time cruisers who want one beach day, one island with a national park and a couple of sea days.
  • Documents: US citizens on a closed-loop cruise can often sail on a birth certificate plus photo ID, but a passport is safer; read cbp.gov before you decide.
  • Perks: ncl.com/free-at-sea lists the drinks, dining, Wi-Fi and excursion perks. Read which ones apply to which guests.
  • The mistake most cruisers make: flying in the same morning you sail. Fly in the day before.

When to go

Hurricane season runs June through November, so September and October carry the most weather risk for itinerary changes; December through April is the drier, calmer stretch. School holidays push prices up, so choose a non-holiday week for the cheapest fares. Check your sailing's price on ncl.com.

Whatever the cruise fare, the extras (flights, hotel, excursions, onboard spend) are where budgets slip, so fill every blank.

How the week usually flows

Saturday or Sunday you board at Port Canaveral and sail out in the late afternoon, then spend a full day at sea. Mid-week you reach the first island port, often Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic or St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Another port day follows, then a second sea day or a stop at Great Stirrup Cay, and you return to Florida for early disembarkation. The order differs by sailing, so treat this as a pattern, not a schedule, and read your itinerary tab on ncl.com.

Getting there and the night before

Fly into Orlando (MCO) the day before and plan about 45 minutes by road to the port (typical; confirm on a live map). The full guide's base cards cover Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral, the MCO airport area and Orlando. If you drive, check parking rules and rates on portcanaveral.com. A pre-night costs one hotel night and saves you from a missed ship if a flight slips.

Documents in one paragraph

For U.S. citizens on a round trip that starts and ends in the same U.S. port, cbp.gov describes closed-loop rules that can allow a government-issued photo ID plus proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate. We could not open that page from our research environment, so confirm there. A passport is simpler if a medical emergency or missed ship forces you to fly home from a foreign port.

Money moves, briefly

The ncl.com/free-at-sea page lists open bar, specialty dining by sail length, 150 minutes of Wi-Fi and excursion credits, and says the upgraded tier costs $49.99 per person per day . Service charges and gratuities are separate from the fare; check the line's FAQ for the current rate before you budget.

Who it suits

Beginners, multi-generation groups and Orlando-and-cruise combos. Not ideal for travelers who want long, relaxed days in port: the days are short and several ports involve a transfer, a tender or a pier walk.

3 free things

  1. Sail-away along the Space Coast. Stand on a high open deck as the ship leaves Port Canaveral past the Cape Canaveral lighthouse and the launch-pad coastline. (photo: Port Canaveral channel and Cape Canaveral lighthouse)
  2. Walk Puerto Plata's terminal village. Taino Bay's pier lets you stroll off and look around without paying for a tour. (photo: Puerto Plata waterfront)
  3. Harbor arrival at San Juan or St. Thomas. Sailing in is a free show: El Morro's walls at San Juan, Charlotte Amalie's hillside at St. Thomas. (photo: El Morro fortress, San Juan; Charlotte Amalie harbor)

Three quick tips

  1. Book your first ship excursion before you sail; popular St. Thomas ones can sell out.
  2. Set a phone alarm for all-aboard time minus one hour; ship time and local time can differ.
  3. Carry a photocopy of ID and your ship card ashore; leave originals in the room safe.

Honest downsides

Port days on this route are short, often 8 a.m. to mid-afternoon, so you pick one thing per port rather than seeing everything. Great Stirrup Cay may mean a tender queue unless your sailing docks at the new pier (check ncl.com). The Dominican Republic carries a Level 2 State Department advisory for crime as of the page we opened, so plan a port-area day or a ship excursion there. Hurricane season can reorder ports with little notice, and the cruise fare is only the start of the budget once you add flights and a hotel.

Good to know before you go

We checked what we could on 2026-10-12; ncl.com, the Bahamas advisory, cbp.gov and Kennedy Space Center pages were blocked from our research environment, so those items are labeled "typically" or "last we checked." Ships, port calls, tender versus pier arrangements, all-aboard times, fees and package terms change by sailing. Confirm everything on your own sailing's page at ncl.com and in the Norwegian app before you go.
