Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Kakheti Wine: Georgia in Six Days
At a glance (Lite)
- Trip length: 6 days, based mostly in Tbilisi.
- Best months: Late spring and early autumn for walking and wine; Kazbegi roads are best in summer and early autumn.
- Safety level: Level 1 overall; Abkhazia and South Ossetia are Level 4 and not part of this plan (checked Oct 21, 2026).
- Getting in from the airport: Bus 337 runs from the Arrivals hall to the city center (checked Oct 21, 2026).
- Entry: The U.S. is listed among countries not needing a visa, but the page gives no stay limit for U.S. citizens (checked Oct 21, 2026).
- Pace: Easy mornings, long lunches, one big mountain day.
What this trip is
Georgia packs three trips into one small country. Tbilisi is a hillside city of balconies, sulfur baths and wine bars. An hour north, Mtskheta holds the country's oldest church traditions. Further north, the Kazbegi road climbs into the Greater Caucasus, and east of the capital Kakheti is the wine region that calls itself the birthplace of winemaking. The country's tourism site says winemaking here "dates back over 8,000 years" (checked Oct 21, 2026).
It is a good fit if you like walking, long meals and old churches more than museums and malls. It is a bad fit if you want a fast, scheduled trip: mountain weather and shared vans reward flexibility.
Three free things
- Walk the old town and the Narikala hillside. Wander the lanes below the fortress ridge. The paths cost nothing; the cable car and any museum entries do. Go at the start of the day when the light is soft.
- Look at Gergeti Trinity Church from the road. The church sits at about 2,200 meters above Stepantsminda, and the official tourism page says you can walk up in roughly 30 to 40 minutes on a path it rates intermediate (checked Oct 21, 2026). The views are the point.
- Stroll Rustaveli Avenue in the evening. The city's main boulevard is free to walk, and the facades and cafe windows give you a feel for the city without spending anything.
A short version of the plan
- Day 1: Arrive, settle in Tbilisi's old town, easy sunset walk.
- Day 2: Rustaveli Avenue, the Mtatsminda hillside and the Dry Bridge flea market.
- Day 3: Mtskheta by day, back in Tbilisi for dinner.
- Day 4: Kazbegi: the Military Highway, Stepantsminda and Gergeti.
- Day 5: Kakheti wine country: Sighnaghi, Bodbe, Telavi.
- Day 6: Slack day in Tbilisi, sulfur baths, souvenirs, departure.
Getting around
From the airport, the airport's own page says the public bus stop is in front of the Arrival hall and taxis wait outside the terminal (checked Oct 21, 2026). Bus 337 serves the city center via Station Square, Rustaveli Avenue and Freedom Square; a single ride costs 1 GEL and gives 90 minutes of unlimited travel when you pay by Metro Money card or many bank cards, and a card costs 2 GEL (checked Oct 21, 2026).
For the day trips, the simplest options are a private driver or a guided day. We deliberately do not quote prices for those: Not confirmed on any official page as of 2026-10-21. Ask for a written price before you go.
Money and basics
The currency is the lari (GEL). Metro and bus fares are posted at https://ttc.com.ge/en/fares (the amounts were not shown when we opened the page, so check the Standard tariff page there). The national tourism hotline is *9898 (checked Oct 21, 2026).
Where to sleep
For a first visit, the old town and the streets around it put most of the sights on foot. Check the chain's map if you want to use hotel points; we have not confirmed which programs have a property in the old town.
Eating well without overspending
Georgian food rewards ordering for the table. Bread baked in a clay oven, cheese-filled breads, dumplings, grilled meats, stewed vegetables with walnuts and fresh herbs: most menus are built to share, and three people ordering four dishes usually eat better than three people ordering one each. We do not name restaurants in the lite guide, because lists go stale. The rule of thumb is simple: eat where locals eat lunch, avoid places with a host calling you in from the pavement, and treat any menu without prices as a reason to walk on. In wine country, ask whether a tasting includes a cellar visit or only a pour at a table. The cellar visit is where you learn how the clay-vessel (qvevri) method works.
Photo moments worth planning for
- Old town rooftops at golden hour. The lanes under the fortress ridge face the right way for evening light.
- The mountain road north. Pull-offs along the Military Highway beat any single viewpoint, so ask your driver to stop twice.
- A Kakheti vineyard in the morning. Go early; the valley haze lifts by ten.
- The church above Stepantsminda. Weather changes the picture completely; clear mornings are best, but fog has its own mood.
Safety in one paragraph
Georgia is Level 1 overall on the U.S. advisory, but the same page lists Abkhazia and South Ossetia as Level 4, Do Not Travel, and warns that the South Ossetia boundary is not clearly marked in places, with unexploded ordnance near both administrative boundary lines (checked Oct 21, 2026). Nothing in this plan goes near them. If you hike off-trail, use a local guide and stay on marked routes.
What you will need to fill in
The full guide includes a cost sheet that names the official page for every number we could not confirm: transport fares, museum tickets, cable car and tasting prices. Hotel rates change daily, so we leave those blank for you.
What's not worth it
Skip trying to see Kazbegi and Kakheti in the same day; the drives are long and you will remember the van, not the view. Skip souvenir shops that advertise a "wine tasting" with no producer named.
Next steps
The full guide has the hour-by-hour days, photo stops, a booking order, a cost sheet with blanks for you to fill, and printable one-page day plans. If you have a week, add the Kakheti day. If you have four days, drop Day 6 and keep Mtskheta short.
This is the free lite guide. The full day-by-day guide, with maps, photo stops, rain plans and the points playbook, is part of PerkJolt All-Access.
Good to know before you go
Hours, fares and border conditions in Georgia shift, sometimes quickly. We checked what we could on 2026-10-21 and stamped each fact with its source. Confirm anything that affects a booking on the official page we name before you pay.
