Lodging

Where to Stay in Bali: Choose Between Ubud, Sanur, Denpasar and Seminyak

Choose a Bali base around the trip you want: inland Ubud, city Denpasar, coastal Sanur or southwest Seminyak, with airport transfer advice and verified hotel examples.

Travel guide

Bali’s lodging choice is also a transport choice. Ubud is an inland town, Denpasar is the provincial capital, Sanur is a coastal district within Denpasar, and Seminyak is a separate southwest-coast base. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is in the south near the beach corridor, not in Ubud. Pick the area that fits most of your plans, then decide whether a second base is worth the hotel move. This guide uses current official hotel, airport and tourism pages checked on September 28, 2026. It does not promise a room, rate, amenity or travel time; confirm all of those with the operator for your dates.

Choose by the days you want to have

Ubud suits a trip centered on inland culture, galleries, markets, rice landscapes and wellness. It is a poor default if every day is meant to be a beach day. Central Ubud offers more opportunities to walk between shops and food, although pavements and traffic can make a short route less straightforward than the map suggests. Resorts on the outskirts or in valleys may trade walkability for quieter grounds; confirm shuttle service, departure times and late-evening transport directly.

Sanur works for travelers who want a coastal stay with local restaurants and an east-facing waterfront, or have a boat departure that makes the area convenient. It is still a road transfer to Ubud, Seminyak and the airport. Seminyak and Petitenget fit visitors who want the southwest beach-and-dining corridor; those names cover different stretches and a hotel in one should not be described as “walking distance” to everything in the other. Central Denpasar is a practical city base for civic, medical, university or local-family visits, and may suit a traveler who values city services over resort beach access. It is not synonymous with a Sanur beachfront stay.

Start with airport logistics

The airport operator currently lists taxis and designated Grab and Gojek passenger pickup facilities in the arrivals area. Decide before landing whether you will use a hotel-arranged pickup or an app pickup zone, and save the property’s exact address and contact number. Ask the hotel to identify the meeting point, vehicle size for your luggage and procedure if your flight is delayed. A driver waiting in the wrong pickup area can add friction at the end of a long flight.

Do not choose a room based on a simple airport-distance number. Bali journeys follow roads, and queues or traffic conditions can change by time and day. Ask the property for a realistic arrival plan and check current airport guidance close to travel. Kura-Kura Bus runs fixed-stop shuttles on selected routes; its own FAQ says the bus generally stops only at designated points and that its airport service is for drop-off, while transfers from the airport are private-car services. It is not a substitute for checking your particular hotel’s route and last mile.

Ubud: town access or an out-of-town retreat?

Central Ubud for walkable meals and short outings

If your days focus on Ubud town, look for lodging that lets you reach the specific places you plan to visit without daily car transfers. Check the actual pedestrian route, curb conditions, hills, stairs, evening lighting and vehicle access. A pin near the center does not guarantee an easy walk with luggage or a mobility aid. Ask a property to explain where a driver can drop you and whether the final stretch is on foot.

Valley or rice-field setting for a slower stay

Maya Ubud Resort & Spa publishes an address on Jalan Gunung Sari in Peliatan and describes Ubud town as reachable by walk or a complimentary shuttle. This makes it a useful example of a quieter property whose town access depends on the actual route and current shuttle arrangements. Confirm the current shuttle schedule, booking procedure, accessibility and room configuration with the hotel; the property’s fact sheet is dated and may not reflect every operating detail today.

Komaneka at Bisma describes itself as being in the heart of Ubud and set on a slope above the Campuhan river valley. That terrain description matters: check the specific room building, path grades, steps and luggage assistance if steep slopes affect your group. Do not infer an accessible route from a central address or property photos. Ask the hotel to confirm the walk and vehicle access for your actual room category.

Sanur and Denpasar: distinguish the beach from the city

Hyatt Regency Bali publishes its address at Jalan Danau Tamblingan 89, Sanur, and positions the property as a beach resort. Its operator page is the best place to check current room capacity and features, including which room types can accommodate children; the page states that standard rooms have specific guest limits and some do not permit rollaways. If you are booking for a family, compare the exact room type against ages and bed needs instead of assuming a resort room fits everyone. Ask for current access details if anyone in your party needs a step-free route.

Central Denpasar may be preferable for administrative errands or family visits, but it is a different choice from a beachfront resort. Search by the exact daily destination and confirm the property’s neighborhood, traffic access and late-night food nearby. A hotel’s city label may say “Denpasar” for a location in Sanur or another part of the regency; read the street address and map area rather than relying on the broad label.

Seminyak: southwest-coast dining and beach days

Alila Seminyak is one operator-verified example in Petitenget, at Jalan Taman Ganesha No. 9. Its own page lists its address and describes proximity to the Petitenget temple area, while the property’s dining information highlights seafood at Seasalt. This location can suit a trip centered on the northern part of Seminyak’s dining and beach corridor. Verify current beach access, room type, construction notices, family arrangements, and any accessibility requirements directly; the page does not establish that every nearby venue is an easy walk or that a particular room is available.

One, two or three days: sleep where you spend the time

One day or a short stop

For an overnight before or after a flight, choose the area that matches the arrival hour and next morning. A south-coast hotel may reduce the first road leg after landing, while Ubud adds an inland transfer. If you arrive late, ask whether the property can arrange a pickup and confirm check-in hours rather than assuming an app car will find a small lane. For a one-day Ubud visit, consider whether changing hotels is worthwhile; a dedicated driver or confirmed shuttle may be simpler than packing and checking in twice.

Two days: favor one base

With two full days, keep one hotel and make one day local. For an Ubud-centered trip, sleep in or near Ubud and choose a small cluster of town and nearby activities; for a beach-centered visit, pick one coast area and avoid daily cross-island returns. If you are visiting central Denpasar, Sanur can be useful for a coastal stay, but budget a separate road journey to city appointments.

Three days: split only if the second area matters

A two-base plan can work when one night in Ubud and two near the southern coast (or the reverse) match your flights and priorities. Treat transfer day as a real itinerary block: check out, luggage storage, road congestion and the new property’s check-in time all matter. Do not book a dinner across the island on that same evening. If you prefer an easy rhythm, keep all nights in one area and accept a planned day trip with a confirmed driver. A third hotel change rarely makes a short trip more relaxing.

Practical checks before paying

Compare the room’s total price after taxes, breakfast, transfer costs, cancellation rules and any resort or service charge that the booking page discloses. Confirm whether a listed shuttle is complimentary, how often it runs, whether seats must be reserved and when the last return departs. For children, request written confirmation of occupancy, bed type, cot availability and any age rules. For a disability or reduced mobility, ask about step-free routes from vehicle drop-off through the room, bathroom layout, lifts, pool access and emergency arrangements. Do not treat “accessible” in a general listing as a guarantee for your needs.

When staying near a temple or during a local ceremony, respect the provincial visitor guidance: dress modestly at sacred places, follow posted access instructions and do not enter areas restricted to worshippers. Check the calendar for Nyepi before you buy flights; movement and services are restricted during the observance and the airport closes. Reconfirm all dates and current rules with official Bali sources.

Official pages checked

Hotel and transport pages were reviewed on September 28, 2026. The named properties are examples of location tradeoffs, not recommendations based on personal stays, ratings or room inspection. Use each operator’s current page to verify exact dates, room availability, amenities, cancellation terms, arrival instructions and accessibility questions before booking.
