Where to Stay in Calgary: Downtown, Beltline or by the Airport?

Compare downtown, Beltline and airport-area bases in Calgary, with hotel examples and practical YYC transit guidance.

Travel guide

Downtown street with sidewalks, trees and modern buildings in Calgary

Calgary works as a city break, an event stop or a first and last night before a drive into the Rockies. Choose your base around what brings you to town: downtown for central sights and business, the Beltline for restaurants and Stampede Park access, or the airport area for a flight-focused overnight. YYC is northeast of central Calgary; airport proximity and a downtown visit are separate planning choices.

Choose your base

  • Downtown core: Convenient for central offices, Stephen Avenue, Calgary Tower, the TELUS Convention Centre and downtown CTrain stations. The core covers several blocks and a hotel near one attraction may still require a walk or transit ride to another. Check the precise address and your meeting or sightseeing destinations.
  • Beltline and Victoria Park: South of the core, with restaurants and nightlife around 17th Avenue and hotels nearer the Stampede grounds and BMO Centre. Useful for event plans; compare the exact walk to your venue and expect event dates to affect availability and prices.
  • East Village and the downtown edge: Consider this side for Studio Bell, the Central Library, The Confluence and east-side plans. Check the route to your hotel, especially with luggage or late arrival.
  • Kensington, Sunnyside and Hillhurst: A separate inner-city base with shops, cafés and access to river pathways. Compare transit and driving routes to downtown, the airport and any event venue; do not assume a neighborhood label means a short walk to a particular stop.
  • Inglewood: A distinct historic main-street area east of the core, with independent shops, food and music venues. Tourism Calgary describes bus access; verify the route and timing for your plans. It may suit a neighborhood-focused stay better than a trip centered on downtown appointments.
  • Airport area: Practical for an early departure, late arrival or short stopover. Airport hotels vary: some are inside the terminal, while others are a drive away. Confirm shuttle operation, hours, pickup instructions and any reservation requirement directly with the hotel.

Five hotels to compare by location

These are location examples, not rankings or endorsements. Official operator pages confirm the listed addresses. Check current operation, rates, room and accessibility details, event dates, parking and transport directly before booking. Map links are for orientation only.

  • Hyatt Regency Calgary — downtown: 700 Centre Street SE, next to the TELUS Convention Centre. The operator describes access to the CTrain and central sights. Useful for downtown meetings and attractions; confirm which entrance and route suit your destination. Official hotel information · Map: Hyatt Regency Calgary.
  • Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel — downtown / east core: 110 9th Avenue SE. Compare for central plans and access toward City Hall, East Village or Stampede Park; check the actual walking route and current construction or event access. Official hotel information · Map: Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel.
  • Hotel Arts — Beltline: 119 12th Avenue SW. The operator places it in the Beltline, south of downtown, near 17th Avenue and the city’s event and business districts. Compare this location if dining, the Beltline or Stampede Park is central to your stay. Official address · Map: Hotel Arts Calgary.
  • Calgary Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel — YYC terminal: 2008 Airport Road NE, inside Calgary International Airport. The operator describes it as steps from baggage claim. Consider it for a flight-focused overnight; it is not a downtown base. Official hotel information · Map: Calgary Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel.
  • Hyatt Place Calgary Airport — airport area: 10 Aero Crescent NE. This is an airport-area address rather than the terminal itself. Confirm the current shuttle schedule, pickup point, luggage capacity and whether advance coordination is needed. Official hotel information · Map: Hyatt Place Calgary Airport.

One, two or three days

  • One day: If your plans are Calgary Tower, Stephen Avenue or downtown meetings, choose the core and minimize transfers. If the night is mainly for a flight, compare terminal and airport-area hotels based on arrival and departure times.
  • Two days: Keep one base and use transit or a car for a second district such as the Beltline, East Village or Inglewood. Check attraction opening days and the route back after evening plans.
  • Three days: A single Calgary base can work for city sights and a separately planned day trip, but confirm tour pickup coverage and the return time before booking. If driving west, account for city traffic and the distance between your hotel and the highway route.

YYC and getting around

Calgary Transit says the former Route 300 Airport/City Centre service was renamed Route 500 Airport Express, with no change to route or service level. YYC’s public-transit page still uses the old number, so use Calgary Transit’s current trip planner for departure details. It is a useful link for some downtown stays, but it does not serve every hotel or neighborhood directly. Check the current Calgary Transit schedule, stop locations, fares and connections for your travel date, then plan the last leg with luggage. Airport-area hotels may have their own shuttle service; ask the property directly for operating hours and instructions.

Calgary’s CTrain serves central and other city destinations, while local buses fill in routes beyond the rail lines. Confirm the nearest station from the hotel and the complete route to your destination rather than relying on a district name. A car can help for regional day trips, but compare parking charges and plan for downtown event traffic. Route 500 Airport Express and hotel shuttle services can change; recheck before travel, especially for a late flight or early departure.

Before you book

Compare the total price for matching dates and room types, including taxes, breakfast, parking and cancellation terms. Check the Calgary Stampede and other event dates if your trip falls during a major event, since location and availability can matter more than a small nightly-rate difference. Confirm check-in, late-arrival instructions, luggage storage, room setup, lift access and bathroom details directly with the property. For step-free travel or other access needs, verify the route, room and transfer with the hotel. Research checked 2026-09-27.
