Cartagena’s best lodging base depends on whether the trip is organized around the historic center, neighborhood dining, a waterfront hotel or a separate resort stay. The historic city and Getsemaní make the most practical base for a short sightseeing visit; Bocagrande is a distinct modern waterfront district; and Barú is an island resort choice with a longer transfer and a different trip rhythm. Compare the actual property and room before booking. District names alone do not establish quiet, step-free access, a view, breakfast or a specific amenity.
For the broader arrival and first-visit route, see PerkJolt’s Cartagena first-visit guide. This lodging guide focuses on how much time you want in each area, how many nights your flights require and what to verify directly with a hotel.
Historic center: shortest walks for plazas and historic streets
Choose the Walled City or its immediate historic center if most of your time is for plazas, museums, historic streets and dinner there. UNESCO’s description places Centro, San Diego and Getsemaní within the historic center’s larger defensive setting by a sheltered Caribbean bay. That geography explains why a central hotel can save transfers on a brief first visit. It does not mean every building has level floors, a lift or vehicle access to its door; older streets and properties vary.
Charleston Santa Teresa identifies its address as Carrera 3 #31-23, Centro Histórico, Plaza Santa Teresa, and describes the hotel as located inside the Walled City. Its official site has current room categories and booking details. Compare the exact category, bed configuration, cancellation terms, arrival instructions, stairs/lift and any accessibility request directly with the property. The hotel’s general location is a starting point, not a promise that a particular room meets your needs.
Getsemaní: near the core, with a different evening feel
Getsemaní is a good base if you want to pair the historic center with dining and evening plans in this adjoining neighborhood. It is not identical to staying inside the walls: ask where the room faces and what the return walk is like for your plans. Travelers sensitive to noise should request a room location in writing and check current property policy rather than relying on a neighborhood-wide promise. Visitors with mobility needs should ask about the route from the closest vehicle drop to the room and confirm thresholds, lifts and stairs.
Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena publishes Media Luna 8B #8B-44, Getsemaní, and says it sits at the doorstep of the Walled City. The property page gives room categories and booking access; its location and arrival page gives airport-arrangement details. Its car-time estimate is the property’s published estimate, not a dependable travel-time promise. Contact the hotel about the actual pickup, transfer, late arrival and room configuration.
Hotel Capellán de Getsemaní describes its location in Getsemaní as close to the Walled City and Historic Center. Use the official hotel site to compare current room categories and booking conditions. Ask directly about the specific room’s access and noise exposure. This example is useful for a neighborhood-base comparison; do not infer that all rooms or facilities have the same features.
Bocagrande: choose it when the waterfront hotel is part of the plan
Bocagrande is a distinct waterfront district rather than an extension of the old streets. It can suit visitors who want a modern hotel by the water and expect to ride to the Walled City, Getsemaní or the boat pier. The tradeoff is more dependence on transfers for historic sightseeing. Do not assume a city beach is swimmable or calm on a particular date; check local beach and maritime advisories.
Hyatt Regency Cartagena lists Carrera 1 #12-118 and describes the property as beachfront in Bocagrande, near the historic center. Its official page links room categories, reservation and contact details. Confirm which room type is being booked, accessibility features, pool or beach status, construction notices and transfer needs for your dates. Avoid comparing on an assumed view or amenity that is not included with your selected room.
Barú: make it a resort stay, not an assumed city base
Barú’s resort properties are a different trip choice from sleeping in central Cartagena. They may work for a longer visit centered on beach/resort time, but a short stay that divides between city sightseeing and an island resort has more transfers and luggage moves. Sofitel Barú Cartagena Beach Resort lists Sector Porto Nao km 7, Isla de Barú. Its official location and transfer page describes boat and road options, published travel estimates and shared-transfer terms, including scheduled departures and capacity. Treat these as property-published details that can change, not a promise for your travel date. Confirm actual pickup, pier, luggage limits, accessibility, weather contingencies and cancellation policy with the hotel before committing.
How many nights do you need?
One full sightseeing day: the trip may need one or two nights depending on flight arrival and departure. An evening arrival followed by one full day and a next-morning departure usually spans two nights. Stay in the historic center or Getsemaní if your plans focus on those areas; a Bocagrande hotel can still work but adds a ride for each historic-center outing. Do not treat a “one-day itinerary” as a one-night lodging instruction.
Two full sightseeing days: plan the actual nights between flight legs, then choose one city base. The historic center suits two days spent mostly among heritage sites and central restaurants. Getsemaní suits a mix of old-city walks and evenings in that neighborhood. A two-night stay provides two sleep nights, not necessarily two full days on the ground; arrival and departure schedules determine usable time.
Three full sightseeing days: a single central or Getsemaní base generally keeps the itinerary simpler. If the third day is a boat outing, ask the hotel about early breakfast, bag storage, pickup/drop-off and late return. Split the stay with Barú only if the resort experience is a major reason for the trip and there are enough extra nights to absorb transfers. Three sightseeing days can require more than three hotel nights when flights bookend the schedule. Count your actual arrival and departure nights before comparing rates.
CTG arrival and local transport
Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) is the arrival point to check for Cartagena city stays. The airport operator lists two authorized taxi stations at domestic and international exits and advises passengers to use those stations. Its transport page links the current taxi-rate information; rates change, so confirm the posted fare for your destination rather than relying on an old screenshot. A hotel-arranged transfer is another option; confirm who will meet you, where, how the vehicle is identified and how to handle flight delays.
If you are considering Transcaribe, use the operator’s MiBus trip-planning information to check an origin-to-destination journey close to travel, then verify the exact stop, service and final walk for your address. The route directory is marked last updated 2025-05-10, so treat it as a route reference rather than a guarantee of current airport service. Public transit does not promise a door-to-door hotel drop; account for luggage, transfers and the walk, especially on a first arrival or late at night.
For address orientation, search the official hotel address in a map app, then ask the property about the vehicle entrance and drop-off street. This does not establish an exact entrance pin, route, travel time or accessible path. Historic streets can constrain where a car reaches the property. Get a written meeting location for a boat excursion from the specific operator on your booking. DIMAR identifies Muelle La Bodeguita as the authorized public passenger pier for Rosario and San Bernardo island services; that public-pier designation does not establish where a particular private excursion departs.
Weather and access checks that can change the stay
IDEAM’s long-term city climatology describes a drier period from December through April and more frequent rain May through November, with October especially wet in the averages. Use that only as background for packing and flexible planning. Check the current forecast before outdoor days. For boat plans, use DIMAR/CIOH’s Cartagena marine forecast and operator notice; weather and sea conditions may affect departure independent of lodging location.
Before paying a nonrefundable rate, ask the property about the exact unit: elevator or stairs, threshold, bathroom configuration, bed dimensions, room-facing noise, air conditioning, included breakfast, luggage storage, airport transfer and cancellation conditions. Check whether the property can receive a vehicle at the time you arrive. Families should confirm bed/crib policy and room occupancy on the actual room offer. A general hotel or neighborhood page cannot answer those room-specific questions.
Make the base match the trip, then book the exact room
For a short historic visit, compare the Walled City and Getsemaní first. Choose Bocagrande when its waterfront setting is central to the plan and you accept extra rides. Keep Barú as a distinct resort decision with its own transfer timing. Calculate nights from flight times, then compare total room terms rather than headline nightly rates. Reconfirm transit, weather, transfer, room-access and boat information close to travel.
Room categories, transfers, access, availability and services can change. Confirm the specific booking directly with the property and verify airport and boat transport close to your trip.
