Delhi and Agra need separate lodging decisions. Delhi is a large capital with multiple rail stations, a busy airport and neighborhoods whose convenience depends on the day’s plans. Agra is another city, with its own stations, hotel districts and monument-entry approach. A room advertised as “near the Taj” does not answer which gate, station pickup or road access you will use, and a centrally located Delhi hotel cannot remove the transfer between the cities. Decide how many nights belong in each place before comparing rooms.
First choose the shape of the stay
For a first visit centered on Delhi and the Taj Mahal, a split stay is usually the clearest planning model: a Delhi base for capital sightseeing and an Agra base for the monument. If you have only one night total, choose which city deserves the overnight rather than assuming a day trip will behave like a local commute. The official Taj Mahal site lists the monument as closed to visitors on Fridays, so check the current official calendar and entry information before choosing the Agra night. The site also directs visitors to the Archaeological Survey of India ticketing portal. Use the current gate and ticket details to select your lodging approach, and do not treat an address-search map link as proof of walking access or a precise route.
For rail, use the official IRCTC e-ticket guide to book and verify the station pair, date, train, class and confirmed ticket status. Delhi has more than one major railway station. “New Delhi” and “Delhi” are not casual synonyms on a ticket; check the station code and the route from your hotel. Agra’s major rail choices also differ in location. Arrange a pickup from the exact arrival station with the property or a provider you have vetted, and confirm how much luggage fits. If you choose a private road transfer, confirm the operator, pickup point, drop point, cancellation terms and rest-stop plan directly. Do not rely on an assumed journey time in a city with variable traffic.
Delhi bases: central, Old Delhi, or near your first stop
Central New Delhi and the Lutyens’ area work well for a mixed first visit when you want a hotel with a clearly documented address and need to reach sights across the capital. The Claridges New Delhi publishes its address as 12 Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Road and provides a location page with directions and nearby landmarks. It is one verified example for travelers comparing a central, full-service hotel; review its current room details, rates, cancellation conditions and direct booking availability on the operator site. Being central does not mean every attraction is walkable. Use day-specific route checks and allow for road traffic.
Old Delhi and Chandni Chowk suit visitors who want to be close to the historic market, Jama Masjid and Red Fort area, and who are comfortable with a dense urban setting. Haveli Dharampura’s official pages identify it as a heritage property in the old quarter and specify Jama Masjid Police Station as the drop-off point for its experience bookings. That detail matters: ask the hotel how arrival, luggage handoff and vehicle access work on your dates. The final approach may require coordination rather than a car stopping at the front door. This base is less attractive if you arrive with several bags, have limited mobility or need frequent cross-city drives; request exact room and access details directly instead of inferring them from the property category.
Choose by transit connection only after confirming the terminal. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s current network page identifies the Airport Metro Express line and its airport connection. Check whether the relevant line is open and useful from your terminal and hotel at your actual arrival time, then compare it with the airport’s current cab and taxi directions. The airport operator lists cab choices and terminal pickup areas for T1, T2 and T3. A direct car can simplify luggage and late arrivals; the metro may make sense for travelers whose hotel is near a station and whose bags are manageable. Neither option is a guaranteed door-to-door journey, so confirm the last leg before booking a nonrefundable room.
Agra bases: Taj East Gate area or a broader hotel district
Taj East Gate Road is a focused choice for visitors whose priority is getting to the Taj without starting from the other side of the city. The Oberoi Amarvilas publishes the address Taj East Gate Road, Agra, and states that it is 600 metres from the Taj Mahal. The property’s location information is useful for understanding that specific hotel’s position, not proof that every nearby room has equivalent access. Compare the official booking page, room categories and current policies directly. Confirm with the hotel which gate approach applies on your date, whether any vehicle restrictions affect arrival, and what route the property recommends for the station transfer.
Fatehabad Road and the wider hotel corridor provide another base to compare if you want lodging and dining choices beyond the immediate gate area. ITC Mughal’s official hotel page locates the property in Agra and links to booking, dining and contact information. Its dining directory includes Peshawri and Mughal Pavilion, which can be convenient for travelers who prefer an on-property meal after sightseeing. Read the current room and dining details rather than assuming each facility, restaurant or service is available on every date. When weighing this area against the East Gate, compare your exact arrival station, planned monuments and departure mode instead of selecting a hotel solely by a headline distance.
Families and travelers with mobility needs should verify the specific room and route rather than relying on hotel-wide labels. Ask whether the reserved room has the bed configuration, lift access, step-free route, bathroom arrangement, child policy, luggage storage and vehicle drop-off that your party needs. For a Taj visit, confirm the gate, security and walking portion from the approved drop-off; official visitor information can change. A hotel’s proximity on a map does not certify the route as accessible, shaded or suitable for a stroller. If you need a quiet rest between visits, consider a base with on-property dining and flexible cancellation terms, then compare the actual rates and inclusions shown for your date.
One night: decide which city gets the overnight
With one night, avoid splitting it across both cities. If the main objective is a Delhi visit and the Agra excursion is optional, sleep in Delhi and keep the plan in the capital. If reaching the Taj at a particular opening period is central, spend the night in Agra and make the transfer from Delhi a dedicated leg. A same-day Delhi–Agra–Delhi plan may be possible only when it fits a verified transport schedule and the traveler accepts the long day; it should not be the default lodging assumption. Book after checking the monument’s current day-of-week status and your actual ticket.
Two nights: one base or a split stay?
Two nights allow either a Delhi-only visit or a careful one-night-per-city split. Keep both nights in Delhi when your sightseeing is mostly capital-based and you are not committed to the Taj. Split Delhi and Agra when the monument matters and your rail or road transfer is confirmed. Moving hotels costs time: pack for the Agra leg, settle check-out and baggage storage with the Delhi property, then confirm that the Agra room’s check-in and station pickup line up with the arrival. Do not assume a train arrival automatically permits an early room handoff.
Three nights: make room for both places
A practical three-night pattern is two nights in Delhi and one in Agra, or one night in Delhi followed by two in Agra if a slower Agra visit is the priority. With two Delhi nights, devote one full day to a coherent central or Old Delhi cluster and reserve the next for a different part of the capital before transferring. An Agra overnight gives the Taj its own day and can accommodate another local sight or a less compressed meal plan. If your flights require returning to Delhi, calculate that last transfer using the specific return booking and leave a meaningful contingency; do not connect a long road or rail transfer to an international departure without protection.
Booking checks that prevent avoidable friction
Compare the official booking terms for dates, cancellation deadlines, taxes, breakfast and child occupancy; these vary by rate and room. Send the property your arrival station or terminal and ask it to confirm the pickup point in writing. Check the name on the hotel reservation against the exact entrance address, especially in Old Delhi where the access arrangement can matter more than a map pin. Ask directly about lift, stairs, accessible bathroom, luggage storage, late arrival and meal service when any of these affect your group. Request current information about road closures or monument approach restrictions close to travel, since a hotel’s page is not a live city traffic bulletin.
Before setting out, recheck the Delhi Metro network, Delhi Airport’s official cab and taxi pickup guidance, IRCTC’s ticket details and the official Taj Mahal visitor site. These sources answer different questions: line connectivity, airport collection points, ticket and train conditions, and monument entry. Keep them distinct. A well-chosen base reduces backtracking; it does not replace confirming each operator’s current instructions for your date.
