Choose your side of the harbour first
Hong Kong accommodation decisions are mostly about where you want to start and finish the day. The harbour separates Hong Kong Island from Kowloon, while the MTR, ferries and buses connect the districts. A hotel that looks close on a map may still mean stairs, a busy interchange, a steep street or an extra cross-harbour trip. Begin with your likely activity cluster and arrival route, then compare individual property details. The Hong Kong Tourism Board’s neighborhood guide introduces districts, and its accommodation finder can help filter listings. A filter for family or accessible rooms is a search aid, not a guarantee about a specific room or route.
For a short visit, Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) is a strong all-purpose base if Kowloon waterfront, museums and ferry access are central to your plans. Central and Sheung Wan suit travelers spending more time on the island, with ferries and dense transit nearby. Jordan offers a more everyday Kowloon location along Nathan Road, with MTR access and a direct airport-bus possibility described by one hotel. These areas feel different after dark and have different walking and transfer patterns; use the official property location page and a map to check the actual entrance.
Tsim Sha Tsui and TST East
The Salisbury, operated by the YMCA of Hong Kong, sits at 41 Salisbury Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. Its property information and booking page and location guide describe the hotel’s position near TST transport, the Star Ferry and the waterfront. That makes it a useful example for a first-time visitor who wants Kowloon-side access to the promenade and a straightforward harbour crossing. Verify the specific room type, bed configuration and any family facilities directly with the hotel; a convenient neighborhood does not settle suitability for every household.
Hotel ICON is in Tsim Sha Tsui East, at 17 Science Museum Road. Its official hotel site is the primary source for its current accommodation and booking information. TST East is a separate choice from the ferry-front core: it places you in the eastern end of the district, so check the walking route you will actually use and whether it connects well to your planned stops. For a family or traveler with mobility constraints, ask the hotel about the booked room’s sleeping layout, bathroom access, lift route and any step-free path from the street. Do not assume that a neighborhood’s station or a hotel’s general accessibility statement resolves those details.
Jordan for a Nathan Road base
Eaton HK is at 380 Nathan Road in Jordan. Its official property page, room descriptions and arrival directions are useful for comparing room categories and the approach from transit. The hotel describes nearby Jordan MTR access and identifies an airport-bus stop on its route page. This can make Jordan practical if you want a Kowloon base without staying directly on the harbor edge, or if your day plan includes Temple Street and nearby neighborhoods. Follow the current hotel route instructions and airport operator information; bus stops, traffic and service conditions can change.
Jordan is not a shortcut to every island attraction. A day centered on Central, Sheung Wan or the Peak still involves a cross-harbour trip. Conversely, staying on the island can add travel when your priorities are TST’s museums and waterfront. Place the heaviest sightseeing days around the base you choose, and use the Star Ferry service page to see how a ferry crossing fits your plan. MTR may be more appropriate when weather, luggage or a timed appointment makes a ferry less convenient.
Airport arrival and return
Hong Kong International Airport’s official ground-transport page lists Airport Express, public buses, taxis and other modes, with separate information for passengers needing assistance. The MTR Airport Express links the airport with Tsing Yi, Kowloon and Hong Kong stations. For a hotel near Kowloon or Central, check whether the station-to-hotel leg is convenient with your luggage; the train station is not necessarily the hotel entrance. A taxi or bus may suit a family with bags better, depending on traffic, luggage volume and the hotel’s exact location.
Plan the return journey with extra margin and verify the current airport and rail service information before departure. If using a hotel airport-bus suggestion, confirm the current route, stop and luggage arrangements with the operator. Avoid using a fixed transfer time from an old review or cached map. For late arrivals, ask the property how to reach its entrance and whether any check-in arrangements apply, and save the address in Chinese and English.
Family needs and access checks
Room labels such as family, suite or accessible do not specify what matters to your party. Before booking, confirm beds and occupancy, connecting rooms if needed, cot arrangements, bathroom layout, lifts, entrance steps, luggage storage and quiet-room requests directly with the property. Confirm any additional charge and the exact booking terms on the hotel’s own page; this guide does not state live prices or availability.
For a step-free trip, ask about the path from the street to reception and from the room to breakfast or transport, not only whether a lift exists. The Transport Department’s passenger guidance and 2025 public-transport guide explain that facilities vary across modes and locations. Verify the specific station entrance, interchange and vehicle with the relevant operator. Pavements can be crowded, gradients and crossings matter, and construction can alter a previously workable route. If an access need is essential, obtain an explicit answer from both the hotel and the transport provider before committing.
Traveling with children can favor a base where food, transit and a quiet break are close together. TST offers a compact cluster of waterfront and cultural stops; Jordan connects to Kowloon neighborhoods; Central/Sheung Wan can reduce island-side transfers. Check a room’s occupancy rules and sleeping arrangements directly, and plan a daily rest stop rather than assuming the city’s density makes every attraction quick to reach.
How many nights to book
- One night: Choose the district that contains the priority activity or the most convenient airport connection. Avoid a hotel move; arrive, check the luggage route and keep the evening nearby.
- Two nights: Keep one base and assign a full day to each side or cluster. A TST/Jordan base can cover Kowloon and one island day; a Central/Sheung Wan base reverses that emphasis. Check ferry or rail service on the day rather than planning a tight sequence around one crossing.
- Three nights: A single well-positioned base usually gives more time than changing hotels. Use the extra day for a slower neighborhood or an outlying excursion only after checking its own transport. Choose Central/Sheung Wan for island and ferry orientation, or TST/Jordan for Kowloon and harbour access; the right answer depends on the itinerary, not a universal ranking.
For a longer stay, compare the cost and hassle of a second hotel against the time saved. Keep luggage handling, check-in windows and the cross-harbour move in view. Recheck official property and transport pages when booking, then confirm room, access and arrival details directly. This keeps the base decision grounded in the current route and the actual room you will receive.
